Paris suburb riots called 'a lot worse' than in 2005
Int'l Herald Tribune/NYT ^ | November 27, 2007 | Elaine Sciolino

PARIS: The rituals and acts of rage have an eerie sameness to them: roving gangs of angry youths clashing with the riot police in France's edgy suburbs, the government appealing for calm, local officials and residents complaining that their problems are ignored.

Two years after an orgy of violence in which rioters in more than 300 suburbs and towns torched cars, trashed businesses and ambushed the riot police and firefighters, Villiers-le-Bel and several nearby suburbs of Paris similarly have erupted in violence and destruction.

In one sense, the unrest seems to be more menacing than during the early days of the three weeks of rioting in 2005. Then, the youth seemed disorganized, their destruction largely caused by rock-throwing and arson and aimed at the closest and easiest targets, like cars. This time, hunting shotguns, as well as gasoline bombs and rocks, have been turned on the police.

"From what our colleagues on the scene tell us, this is a situation that is a lot worse than what we saw in 2005," Patrice Ribeiro, a police officer and senior union official, told RTL radio Tuesday. He added, "A line was crossed last night, that is to say, they used weapons, they used weapons and fired on the police. This is a real guerrilla war."

Ribeiro warned that the police, who have struggled to avoid excessive force, would not be fired upon indefinitely without responding.

The French are a very proud people.

Well, ok they’re arrogant. But they’re very proud. It would not surprize this poster one bit, if the very same whine and cheese crowd which has complained about Bush for the last decade — were to suddenly erupt in a countrywide wave of support for Zarkozy if he comes down like a ton of bricks on the rioters.

I really think the French don’t so much mind cowboy diplomacy. What bugs them, is when Americans get to do it all.

Time for Zarkozy to respond big.

I was in Paris for a week last month on business. It's a beautiful city and reminds me of the upper East Side and West Sides of NYC.

I saw one Moslem in the city, an elderly man.

I pray these riots stay in the suburbs (this riot is west of Charles DeGalle AP). If these weapons find there way into the city, the foundations of this society will shake.

I don't believe Sarkozy will allow that to happen. If the police start shooting utes in the banlieux, the outcome is unknown. Either it escalates or is suppressed (only to erupt no doubt in the future).

“Sarkozy is no Chirac. He is not likely to let this stand. I would expect a very strong response from the police and government. Like Reagan’s response to the air traffic controllers when they went on strike. Different situation here but Sarkozy is the type to have a similar, surprisingly firm response.”

Like the stoners used to say..relax man take a chill pill.

But French intellectuals won’t like it if Sarkozy comes down hard on the yutes. They’ll say he’s being Hitler. That being said, I can’t believe the French have put up with this nonsense for so long. Time to crack a few skulls.

Societies need to have laws and rules. These people don’t seem to respect either. Personally, I think they need to be rounded up and put in prison....but that is just me.

Zarkozy’s response will be very interesting.

I haven’t heard it on Fox (altho I admit I don’t keep it on all the time anymore—I’m so tired of the murder of the week stuff).

Not a problem. Sarkozy need only explain to the French intellectuals he’s not being Hitler, he’s being Stalin.

As I recall, the violence last time reached into one of the main Paris metro stations.

Now I’m curious. Who would be crazy enough to park their cars on the streets of the Muslim banlieux? Are they burning their own families’ cars?

I heard on the radio that the “youths” have been joined by organized gangs, whatever that means.

Also, I seem to remember the rioting lasting more than three weeks, and as having been revived sporadicly ever since.

But where is the victory in arresting all of them, only to grant them lifetime increased welfare checks and concessions, since the French obviously have mucked up severely in failing to provide assimilation for these rampant youths? There needs to be a volley of real lead bullets, followed by a volley of buses stopping just outside the border of France to disembark passengers.

Sarkozy better not be all talk. Who runs the show, the islamofacist punks, or you Sarkozy? Put some of these kids in the paddy wagon, if they are felons, trouble makers, then DEPORT them back with their parents to the shit hole country they came from. And if they fire at cops, fire back, with live rounds. Be the man...
