WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Trent Lott’s decision to resign from office may open the doors for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander to win an influential leadership position in the Senate.

Aides to Alexander said today that the Maryville Republican is considering running for the minority whip position currently held by Lott. The minority whip is the Senate’s No. 2 Republican.

“Sen. Alexander is looking at all options and will be having conversations throughout the day,” said his spokesman, Lee Pitts. “We’ll be making a decision soon about what, if anything, that he plans to do.”

Alexander ran for whip last year but lost to Lott by just one vote.

Replace one Establishment loser with another. Great.

My thoughts exactly!

I'd like to see John Cornyn, he's been fighting hard against comprehensive immigration reform and securing our borders first.

Great, replace one rino with another. As a Tennessean, I can say I hope someone runs against him next year. He was really pro illegal alien until we slammed his phone and email lines. I am still not sure he will vote the right way any time it comes up, so I certainly wouldn’t trust him in any position of leadership.

I personally don’t think anyone will. Lamar has too much power and influence with the state rinos.

Oh, PLEASE, no. Lamar! the RINO needs to join Lott in retirement. Either Sessions or Dr. Coburn for Whip.

>> Either Sessions or Dr. Coburn for Whip <<

Or preferably, put them both in the leadership with Coburn for Republican Leader and Sessions for Republican Whip. ;-)

Even better. Of course, Coburn is too much of an iconoclast to get him a leadership posting.
