Eagerly anticipating the defeat in Iraq to which they are so much attached, some on the left have also been preparing for another contingency: the assault that they think they see coming, a drive to pin the whole wretched failure on them. Apparently, this will be "stab in the back" redux, a new iteration of the theme deployed so successfully in interwar Germany by a resourceful, ambitious Austrian corporal, who managed to propel his rise to power with the claim that World War I would have been won by his country, if not for sinister forces at home. Then, it was subversion by Jews and other disloyal elements. This time, in the left's imagining, the blame will fall on the press and the Democrats who, by pulling the plug at just the wrong moment, caused the loss of Iraq. "Nobody I know in a rational condition believes that the United States is going to have any kind of a military victory," Mark Shields said in August. "So the idea is going to be, 'We were on the cusp of victory and the rug was pulled out from under us by these willy-nilly, weak-kneed, nervous Nellies back home.' "
The problem with this is (1) that we may really win, and have no failure to blame upon anyone, and (2) that the nervous Nellies really did try to keep us from winning, indeed fought fang and claw to derail our best efforts. If they had had their way, Iraq would still be the quagmire they are so fond of invoking, and the United States--or George W. Bush, which may be the more relevant factor--would have incurred a definitive and, at least in his case, legacy-blasting defeat. It is unfair of course to call this a stab in the back, as the Democrats have been engagingly open about their intentions. In the course of the past year, they have gone from attacking a plan that had not been effective to attacking one that hadn't been tried yet, to attacking one that exceeded all expectations, while in the process ignoring reality, slandering a commanding general, and denying American forces in battle due credit for what they had done. If not backstabbing as such (see above), it is diverting enough a spectacle to merit a replay. Let us look back at this last year of battle and see how the story played out.

The Republicans need to make the rampant disloyalty of the Democrats the centerpiece of next year’s elections.
I think we should start by pointing out the Democrat efforts to destablize our relations with Turkey through that stupid Armenian resolution. The result? Triggering the rise in oil and gasoline prices.
The democrat leadership and their activist base are traitors pure and simple.
I agree.... their intent is to bring down the USA.
The Democrats have been unafraid to stab the Republicans in the front. It’s the American People they have been stabbing in the back.
DemocRATs’ march to defeat is just beginning. By September of next year, Iraq could very well be on the way to a striving democracy with security and commerce returning to Baghdad as well as the rest of the Country. I bet if you were to compare the accomplishments of the Iraqi Parliament with that of the American congress, Iraq is probably more productive. What does that tell you about this congress?
We need to return to a smaller government where the Federal government is meant to protect us and protect our freedoms according to the Constitution. Return all the rest to the States. Moral decay was the downfall of the Roman Empire and it will be America’s downfall if Conservatives do not stand up and bring this Country back to our roots.
Conservatism has never failed, only those politicians who claim to be conservative have failed.
VOTE OUT ALL THE RINOS.
The dems are idiotic buffoons, and, worse, they think we are, too.
The stab that failed ping.
The Democrat backstab hasn’t failed, not yet. It’s too early to tell, but, as Retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo “Dirty” Sanchez, recently stated in the Democratic weekly radio address, Iraqi leaders had failed to make “hard choices necessary to bring peace to their country.” Until those bickering tribals over there do make some political progress, the jury’s still out.
All we’ve shown so far is that we can force ‘em to occasionally behave in a slightly more civilized manner if we lean on ‘em hard enough. Old Paul Harvey has said something about the Middle Eastern Muslims being unready for, and incapable of, understanding and maintaining fair elections and representative government. I agree with Paul.
It is truly a paradox when the Dems say that want peace in the world and say they want to see one world, one government. YET, they are isolationist when it comes to defending the homelands of the countries that would be friendly to the USA. That message resonates loud and clear to many countries and makes us a weak and wavering partner in their eyes.
The Reps give a more consistent message: be friends with the USA and we will help you when adversity strikes, whether war or natural calamity..The Rep message to friendly countries is that we are strong and steady partners, fully armed to defend you, and resourceful enough to lift you up again when disaster strikes.
The Dems are stumbling along, unable to formulate a program for success in the world, and 2008 will not be the year they wake up- because nothing will ever satisfy their vast left wing base. They are victims of their past success in getting US out of Vietnam and are locked into their isolationism because of it. But Iraq is not Vietnam and they just don’t get it, same as they don’t fully comprehend the worldwide fight against terror and they miss the main point that the Muslims want to wipe out every ‘infidel’ and impose their laws by force on every country..
The Dems don’t have a clue and won’t have a clue in ‘08 because their internal forces are tearing them apart....For that reason they will be defeated in 2008. The Reps will win the Presidency and will win back Congress, especially if they can give Americans another Contract with America. That worked brillintly before- all 10 points were passed. It can work again.
I wonder how much the Democrats are paying the people who have been mortaring the Green Zone lately?
Beyond moral support? I don’t know. But they’re cheering for them.
You are right. Unfortunately, I see not a single Republican that has the courage and focus to capitalize on that target rich environment. Nationally, its almost a no brainer. In my State, Michigan, we have a vile piece of trash senator named Karl Lenin that no one will take on.
I used to respect Paul until he pi$$ed and moaned on and on about the three wars America has lost-Vietnam, Iraq, and I’m not sure what other one he bleats about. Time for him to retire. Good job for Fred Thompson when he bows out of the race.
Never happen ... if the situation were reversed the 'Rats would use it a heartbeat and it would be considered fair dialog by their cohorts in the liberal MSM. Republicans try it and it will be portrayed as reprehensible, below the belt, dirty politics ... after all with a two party system differences of opinion are encouraged and welcome not meant to be used to bludgeon your opponent in the next election cycle. Especially so if a 'Rat happens to be in jeopardy on the receiving end.
That would be nice, wouldn't it?
Unfortunately, balls don't grow on trees.
