(U.K. Prime Minister - Gordon) Brown behind commission to curb nanny state

The Government is planning a new Whitehall commission that will try to tackle the growth of the "nanny state".

Gordon Brown is personally leading the "radical" initiative, having accepted that government has "assumed more responsibility for people's lives than is healthy or desired".

He wants the new body to explain to the public why it should no longer do so. advertisement

In June, the Prime Minister asked the Better Regulation Commission (BRC), the independent watchdog, to work out the plans and it is understood the final details are now being agreed.

If the proposal is given the green light, the commission will be beefed up, extending its remit from its current focus on the way government regulates business, charities and the public sector.

It may be put in charge of nationwide media campaigns to explore public attitudes to risk and encourage greater self-reliance. It could also take Whitehall departments to task when it identifies ministers whose departments are over-regulating.

One source said: "This is an important initiative. If it gets endorsed, it will reflect well on the Government's efforts on regulatory reform."

The move follows the BRC's report on risk and regulation, published at the end of last year, which argued that Britain had developed a "disproportionate attitude to risk". The commission made a series of recommendations, which the Government accepted in full.

These included seeing regulation as the last resort and launching campaigns to emphasise the importance of "resilience, self-reliance, freedom, innovation and a spirit of adventure" in society.

Pat McFadden, minister for better regulation and post offices at the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, said in January that the Government now wanted to act.

"The Government will seek to articulate the acceptable levels of risk in society below which it will not intervene to improve outcomes," he said.

The commission is chaired by Rick Haythornthwaite, chief executive of private equity firm Star Capital Partners.

On Monday, the European Commission president, José Manuel Barroso, appointed Mr Haythornthwaite to a 15-man panel created to advise the Commission on how to implement its plan to reduce red tape by 25pc by 2012

Gordon Brown is leading his government in the right direction. Will the Democrats pick up Labour's new message? Nope - they will do the exact opposite.

Asking the Govt to investigate the Govt by a committee seems a bit daft.

Its considered "radical" to eliminate government control over people's lives and let them make their own choices? I guess it is in the UK.

Britain had developed a "disproportionate attitude to risk".

No we haven't. Unelected and unaccountable NGO's have a bad attitude to risk, and have foisted it on us.

They should just do it! Its ironic at a time when the Democrats think the Nanny State isn't big enough to take care of all of us... yet.

Does this mean they’ll be able to kick out the muslims that are attempting to take over England? If so, the rest of Europe should learn from this or totally loose their countrys.

I don’t see any mention of cutting taxes.

Truthfully, if this is for real, it is a brilliant idea. More than anything else, Britain needs to remember that it is founded on Common Law principles, not the Code Napoleon that is beloved in Brussels.

"It is the right of freeborn Englishmen to neither be taxed nor ruled over without their consent."

Unfortunately, there is no motivation for government to let go. There is only motivation to escalate.

LOL!!!!

I'll be glued to ESPN tomorrow afternoon for the UD-DSU game. It will be a historic game because it took the NCAA ro force the powers that be at the U of Delaware to do the right thing and play a football game against the downstate team.

After the Macy's Parade my daughter and I watched the Philadelphia dog show and then I watched "Miracle on 34th Street."

I absolutely love that movie, and it was really special to me today because my 9 year old actually understood the message. Dinner was delayed 1/2 hour so I could watch the end of it :)
