Malnourished boy rescued at buffet
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 11-21-07 | Amy L. Edwards

The inside of his ears had been burned with cigarettes. He was forced to drink shampoo. >His caretakers bent two of his toes to the point that an amputation may be necessary, according to reports.

When a Westgate Resorts administrative assistant spotted the 7-year-old trying to serve himself cereal at the buffet in their Osceola County sales center earlier this month, the first thing she noticed was his trembling arms. They were too thin. His eyes were sunken.

"He was really skinny," said Westgate employee Hilda Berrios. "He looked like one of those kids you see on TV." "As I focused, looking on him, I noticed the bruises and the cuts. I just kept noticing one thing after another. I was like, this isn't right."

Berrios contacted her manager, who contacted Westgate security, which called the Sheriff's Office.

The Department of Children and Families on Tuesday said Berrios and two other employees -- Steve Siegel and Humberto Garcia -- likely saved the boy's life.

The boy, who was alone when Berrios spotted him, had a large bruise on his temple and dried blood on his head. His legs were black and blue. Berrios asked the boy if he knew where his mom was. He didn't. She asked if he could spot her in the room. "There was no one," she said. "No one."

Two Baker County women who cared for the boy, Suzette Renee Stevenson, 45, and her girlfriend, Jamie Lynn Martin, 26, are accused of leaving the child in a car while they toured Westgate's time-shares Nov. 6. Each woman was arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse. Martin is being held at the Columbia County Jail, and Stevenson is jailed in Baker County.

If you read on in this thread, you’ll find that “mom” is a meth addict serving time in a California jail, while “daddy” didn’t want to take care of this young guy. I say throw them into the general population along with these two lesbian swine and then let Darwinism run its course.

Irrelevant- what’s relevant is the the aunt’s “partner” (Stevenson) did not have legal custody and should not have been able to take the boy anywhere. I don’t know whose responsibility it would have been to realize when the aunt died that there was a child that at that point would have gone into state custody and sent to foster care if both parents were in jail.
It’s possible that the father just sent the boy to the aunt without any paperwork or legal transferral of custody. In which case I believe even the aunt would not have been a legal guardian. Not sure how that works but would perhaps explain why the kid was totally off the radar (if that was the case and not shoddy administration in child services).

Sorry for the confusion -- that was merely sarcasm. For all I know, they are sisters or mother/daughter.

Happy Thanksgiving.

God bless those three employees for taking a closer look, and taking action.

The “system” sure failed this child somewhere, somehow. You’d think there are all kinds of safeguards in place but still too many kids are victimized.

I just had a idea. How about lets' all contact that resort, and ask for a commendation for the woman who had the courage and compassion to go for help on behalf of that boy. I am planning on calling and writing a note. Joyce

Doesn’t look like THEY missed any meals!

I would guess they got the foster kid as a source of income, using the money meant for the kid's care for their own uses

I read the article. I also am familiar with FL law. No way the sex partner could “just get custody” without cutting corners.

Another black eye on child welfare services of FL.

This boy was saved from being another “lost child”. (they literally lose kids only to find out they died years ago and the murder trail is cold)

stand in line, ‘cuz I’m doing it first. I don’t smoke, but I can think of a few OTHER painful things I would put inside their body cavities.

Sickening..

I fully agree. I adopted four siblings horribly neglected and abused — found in inhumane conditions with their birthparents in a home you read about on the news, with animal feces stacked up and trash and filth. Kids hadn’t bathed in weeks — clothes disinigrating off their little filthy bodies. Girls’ hair was matted — had to be cut off — baby’s legs covered in dead cockroach parts, etc. They are thriving in my care — loving, able to give and receive love, happy, joyful, etc.

It is possible — through the grace and love of God, who rescued them — and who brought them into my life, to change ME also. They are amazing.

Lord willing, this little boy will be loved, and will do fine. He’s a scrappy little fighter, for sure.

Hell will never be hot enough for the monsters that hurt this little boy. My prayers for this little boy! God bless his rescuers!

His parents ditch him in the car, and he goes to look for food.

You are more liberal than me, if you consider a pair of lesbians who apparently get their kicks abusing a young boy, to be 'parents'.

Or just a guy who skimmed the article right after waking up in the morning, didn’t notice, and didn’t care (because it was not germane to the point I was making).
