Say NBC: Is Iraq Still In 'Civil War'?
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

As the first anniversary of its grand declaration fast approaches, does NBC continue to believe that Iraq is in a state of civil war? Readers will recall that as we described here, Matt Lauer opened the Today show on November 27th, 2006 with these words:

Good morning. Civil war. A bloody weekend of sectarian clashes in Iraq and no sign it's letting up.

A bit later, Lauer portentously declared:

For months the White House rejected claims that the situation in Iraq has deteriorated into civil war. For the most part news organizations like NBC hesitated to characterize it as such. After careful consideration, NBC News has decided the change in terminology is warranted and what is going on in Iraq can now be characterized as civil war.

After careful consideration, I have decided that NBC is biased.

Whenever I hear a former General like Gen. Barry McCaffrey speak , I think about how long victory in Iraq would have taken had Ol’ Blood and Guts Patton been the theater commander.

Answer, it would have been over a long time ago, and we would be out of there, by now.

We'll be watching next Tuesday to see how NBC marks the one-year anniversary of its civil-war-in-Iraq declaration. Can you expect humility from a peacock?

Humility from Matt Lauer? Not likely.

The only civil war is the propagandists assault on our rational faculties. They’re fortunate we’re civil.

civil war (whatever that means) ...

A civil war is a war in which parties within the same culture, society or nationality fight against each other for the control of political power.

In Iraq, an example might be Iraqi Sunnis fighting Iraqi Shiites for control of the country.

well I’m glad you small “n”d the word “nationality”, LOL......palestinian should always spelled like that, too. “iraq” is a made-up country, therefore so is the nationality......the cultures/societies and various elements of them all within “iraqs” arbitrary borders that you did and didn’t mention simply are not and will not be conducive to political unity. JMO and expectations......if you take it to mean that preventing a “civil” war is now our mission, we’ll never be able to leave.

It never WAS a civil war.

The civil war was a figment of the media's imagination.

Well, of course it wasn’t. But the narrative...the template... required a bad guy, so Bush was the bad guy and he caused the civil war that wasn’t. The reality was that many, many Iraqis were intermarried with other tribes and religions, but a civil war allowed our “experts” to explain how Bush triggered the war.

Like the idiot Cronkite back when, stupid things have a habit of being perpetrated among the masses of ill informed. I’ll leave it go at that.
