Hundreds of grumbling parents facing a threat of jail lined up at a courthouse Saturday to either prove that their school-age kids already had their required vaccinations or see that the youngsters submitted to the needle.
The get-tough policy in the Washington suburbs of Prince George's County was one of the strongest efforts made by any U.S. school system to ensure its youngsters receive their required immunizations.

There are some US Citizens who object to vaccinations. I don’t want to mislead you. I do think there is a fairly good chance that a significan portion of these kids are the children of illegal aliens, but I have no way of knowing.
Someone from the area may be able to inform you that my theory is not born out by the facts. I tend to doubt that will be the case.
Thanks for your response. I hope you can understand I’m just raising a possible cause for this problem.
Her friends have claimed that she’s almost a nun . . . but no, she’s just a very devout Catholic girl who takes the idea of no-sex-before-marriage quite seriously. As I noted, any kid who picks St. Maria Goretti’s picture to hang on her wall . . . .
I think Hep B is the old Yellow Jaundice and if it is, then yes it is contagious...
I got YJ from drinking milk straight from a cow with YJ when I was 9...I was visiting some kids who lived way up in the back country...we caught the cow and milked her to put warm creamy (unsterilized) milk on our cereal...we took the bowls down to the cow...
The kids were healthy as horses and not effected by the cow..but the next week I was very sick and stayed home from school for 3 weeks,,,my brother caught YJ from me but a milder case...
ok but after marriage she might get it from her husband. As far as public policy is concerned you might as well get everyone vaccinated when they are young.
Prince George's County is very heavily black, with a lower incidence of illegals than some counties. On the video, the kids shown getting shots, the majority were of color and one lone white kid.
Chances are good that the one thing these kids have in common is poverty, regardless of skin color
simply put, you are NOT free.
this is a very controlled society that everyone must conform.
So basicly what we’re probably seeing is parents who didn’t bother to comply. Thanks for your input. Take care.
That's because you believe in parental responsibility and pay attention to the details that are necessary for life to move smoothly.
That's asking a lot of the rest of the population.
She still might want to think about it since she’s in the right age group to receive it. It’s not a slur on her sexuality, but she could be exposed to HPV even in marriage. I caught it from my fiance (now-husband) who apparently caught it from his exW and harbored the virus for awhile with no symptoms. I wish the vaccine had been available back then (in the early 80s).
Excellent points...
I work in a school district where parents are great but there are always the few......A few years ago we had no shots on record for a child. I finally sent a letter to the parents, after numerous phone and email messages, stating their child could not come to school until we had his immunizations or at least an exemption letter on file. This child’s mom is a nurse practitioner and dad is a scientist it wasn’t as if these were ignorant parents...we finally got the documentation within days.
I do not like to strong arm parents like that but I also do not appreciate being ignored.
That’s a good point. Once we get to the marriage stage, it’s certainly worth considering.
Many states require homeschoolers to be immunized so that doesn’t solve any problems. These parents have known for months these shots were due, they just ignored the notices thinking they would go away. They aren’t interested in parenting them at the most basic level, what makes anyone think they would home school successfully?
Can you be too old to receive the HPV vaccine?
Not spread by casual contact doesn't mean not spread at all. Kids get cuts. Kids bite each other. Kids get raped. Later, kids turn into teenagers and most of them get tattoos and have sex. Maybe even your kids.
Public health is the public's business.
That is so much baloney. Once the child is vaccinated the immunity they have available is the amount that the vaccination confers. Some vaccinations have a really low rate of immunity (some have less than 70%), others have much higher. It has nothing to do with the number of sick kids around them.
"I'm not quite old enough to remember when they closed the swimming pools because of polio epidemics"
Then you will be interested to learn that the only cases of polio in this country in the last 10 or so years were caused by the vaccination. The live polio virus can cause polio.
“Public health is the public’s business.”
You and Hillary will make a great team as you take over the health care system in this country.
That. . .seems only to be, apparently; a matter of opinion or knowledge of fact. My daughter's Pediatrcian said - do not do 'flu' vaccines on her children (duh. . .) to young and because they are STILL using mercury in the shots that they were 'hyping'. Or maybe these are 'older' batches (?) Other Pediatricians simply do not go 'there'. I have also read, repeatedly. . .that while mercury is no longer used in a number of 'shots'; it has yet to be altogether abandoned.
So 'who to believe?' I don't know; but think it is all too easy for Doctors to be more than cavalier; as they consder what they think may be a 'greater good'. . .versus, alowing the Parents to weigh their options - so as to consider the probabilities of negative cause and effect.
From what I have read - and perhaps again a 'who knows' - that many (all?) flu shots etc. still are mercury based.
We can only wonder why 'autism' is on the rise. . .the stats here can no longer be excused as our simply being more aware; and the same applies for Alzheimers. That vaccines can 'never' be tainted. . .impure or just a 'bad batch'; and that those who receive them; are physically equal is unrealistic.
Much to think about; as seeking immediate protection may mean, more opportunity for future degenerative issues - whether it be child related. . .or the degenerative issues of aging adults.
And of course, not all body/physical constituions the same. What might prove quite damaging to one; may not impact another; but to ignore the possibilities and the respect of permitting one to weigh in truthfully on the matter; is medically inexcusable.
Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus as I understand it. But not something one ‘catches’ from someone else - the virus lays dormant in the body and released, often the result of injury such as a fall.
