Petersen easily unseats Davis in Senate (gun-grabbing, RINO wife of Tom Davis lost in VA)

Jeannemarie Devolites Davis yesterday lost her bid for re-election to the Virginia Senate, dealing Republicans a blow in a key Northern Virginia district.

John Chapman "Chap" Petersen, a Democrat, defeated Mrs. Davis in the 34th Senate District in central Fairfax.

"This is one of those moments you dream of all your life," Mr. Petersen told the crowd last night at his postelection gathering at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner.

"When I was young and stupid, I thought I would put Fairfax on the map, but the reverse happened. The people of Fairfax City put me on the map," he said.

With 39 of 47 precincts reporting, Mr. Petersen had 20,407 votes, or 56 percent, compared with 16,183 votes, or 44 percent, for Mrs. Davis, according to unofficial results from the Virginia State Board of Elections.

Mrs. Davis conceded the race at about 10:30 p.m.

Democrats needed to pick up four seats to take control of the Senate for the first time since 1995 and targeted their efforts on three races in Democrat-trending Northern Virginia.

Although incumbent Republicans in the neighboring 37th and the 39th districts faced similar challenges, Mrs. Davis, who was elected to the House of Delegates in 1997...

--snip--

Mrs. Davis on the campaign trail referred to herself during one appearance as a RINO — a "Republican in Name Only."

She voiced support for a moratorium on the death penalty and talked about giving homosexuals the legal benefits of marriage, while downplaying the fact that she sponsored a constitutional ban against same-sex "marriage" that Virginia voters passed last year.

She touted her unsuccessful push to allow local governments to ban firearms in public recreation centers and to close a loophole that allows firearms to be sold and traded without background checks by collectors and enthusiasts at gun shows...

And just WHO did she expect would vote for her?

Yeah, now she’s old and stupid!

Despite losing Republican seats in the house and control of the senate, we gained 3 pro-gun seats in the senate and 4 in the house.

In other words it was in essence a DemocRAT primary in that district.

WAHAHAHAHAHA!

I love it! She admits she ran as a RINO, and according to the article, the conservatives went and backed her opponent. No wonder she lost!

BTW, doesn’t it just show that even in “purple” areas, that it pays to be more conservative than liberal? I mean, even in NOVA, aren’t there are a lot of hunters?

When you proudly proclaim that you are a liberal and stand for everything your party opposes and vice versa, just what do you expect?? Absurd. I’m glad she lost.

If we had a few out here on the left coast, I'd tell tell the GOP where to go and what to do with itself once it got there.

You obviously didn't read...nor comprehend the article.

The quote you cited was by the winner, Mr. Peterson. Not the loser, Mrs. Davis.

Certainly not in that district! : ) It's smack in the middle of Fairfax County. Lots of dead deer litter the roadways, however.

With one exception (a State Senator) any Republican who ran on a strong anti-illegal alien platform won.

Even the Democrats were saying they were for tougher immigration laws at the end of the campaign.

I don't live in that district, but that was a conundrum. The only reason I could think of for supporting Davis was the "R" next to her name and the razor-thin margin in the state senate. On principles, the lesser evil was Chap Petersen.

I know little or nothing of what happens in the Virginia Senate, but this new guy who is taking office and who is being declared to have good principles . . . for whom is he going to vote for Senate Majority leader? You know, the guy who determines the agenda and decides on what bills will be voted on. Is this Peterson guy going to vote to provide conservative Republicans the power to control agenda?

Petersen is still a Democrat, but I think he's more conservative than Devolites-Davis.

She even got endorsements from The Washington Post and NYC's Mayor Bloomberg, for crying out loud.

A most excellent question that should be put to every US congressman in the GOP.

Run and hide in the closet - and be found out by the voters - or come out and admit RINOhood.
Either way, you can kiss your GOP career goodbye, and good riddance.
