Retailer Denies Sign is a Slur [Hispanic store advertises "Credit Without Gringo Papers"]

A Casa Furniture and Bedding store in Alexandria has been advertising easy credit with a twist: “no gringo papers” necessary.

A sign outside the store at the intersection of North Beauregard and King streets reads, “Credito sin papeles de gringo.” In English, that could be translated to say “Credit without gringo papers.”

Blanca Granados, the store's assistant manager, translated the message to mean “just 'without white papers,' like Social Security or like that.”

Miss Granados said the store requires customers who purchase furniture on credit to fill out an application and provide personal documentation. The store will accept a passport as identification.

“Some people say, 'You know, I don't have a Social Security,' ” Miss Granados said. “They can show their passport if they don't have any other papers.”

The American Heritage Dictionary defines the word gringo as “a disparaging term for a foreigner in Latin America, especially an American or English person.”

But the word “gringo” in the store's sign is not intended to offend anyone, Miss Granados said.

(snicker) - easier for them to get credit when their’s is already in the toilet, too. These companies will lose money on a lot of them.

File a suit by all means. Let these people see what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a big load of PC crap. Maybe the fools will think twice before looking for ways to make trouble.

I am terribly upset and offended by the use of the word gringo, especially to see it plastered on a sign for all the world to see. What will my children think? Why, I don’t know if I can continue the rest of the day. I may have to go home and lie down.

Gringo is pejorative term used against whites.

Therefore, racist.

Therefore a hate crime.

I honestly could give a rat’s ass about whether some Hispanic calls me a “Gringo” or not. It is the hypocritical double standard that irritates the crap out of me, especially from adherents to the principles of liberalism in which things like this are their life blood.

When I was in Brazil, the word “gringo” was ubiquitous.

It’s easier to say than “Norte Americano”.

“Yanqui” is not used as much as “gringo”.

However, I never noted a disparaging tone. It was mostly surprise that a “gringo” could speak portuguese. Some brasileiros thought my accent was from a different region they had not heard before.
:)

But the sign above is definitely intended to disparage non-Latinos.

First, that sign has been there, to my direct knowledge, for more than five years. Second, “gringo” is the least of it. As a Spanish-speaker, I can assure you this is a sign designed to target and attract illegal alien customers. There is no other way to take it. Third, The Washington Times is living in an English-language bubble. On Spanish language radio and TV here, and I have four Spanish channel on my No. VA. Comcast cable, “sin papeles de gringo” is a very, very common addition to ads for car dealers, insurance, mortgage and real estate companies. IT IS THE NORM. What they are doing is thumbing their noses at this country’s requirement that they be here legally, and much of this goes on under the radar because so few “gringos” speak Spanish. Allow me to translate: Sin papels de gringo means, “We don’t need no stinkin’ papers, visa, proof of legal residency or green cards.”
