Mexican president decries 'growing harassment' of migrants in U.S.

MEXICO CITY

President Felipe Calderon decried Wednesday what he called "the growing harassment" of Mexicans in the United States and said his government will work to counter it by funding a media campaign to show migrant success stories.

Mexican officials have expressed concern over a recent wave of immigration raids and a U.S. political climate perceived as anti-migrant. Calderon said U.S. presidential candidates were using migrants as "symbolic hostages" on the immigration issue.

"I am especially worried about the growing harassment and frank persecution of Mexicans in the United States in recent days," Calderon said at a meeting of the Mexican government's migrant assistance agency.

He called on leading U.S. presidential candidates to "stop holding Mexicans in their country as symbolic hostages in their speeches and (campaign) strategies." He was apparently referring to the hard line some candidates have taken on the immigration issue, and other candidates' unwillingness to take a clear stance in the debate.

To bolster the image of migrants in the U.S., the Mexican government will launch "direct media campaigns aimed at showing migrant success stories and raise awareness of the many contributions" migrants make to U.S. society, he said.

Calderon noted 6 million of the 11 million Mexican migrants in the United States are undocumented, and endorsed the creation of what he called the League Against Discrimination Against Mexicans in the United States.

Pablo Alonso Flores, a member of advisory council of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, described the new anti-discrimination league as a group "run by Mexican-Americans, aimed mainly at defending our rights peacefully and respectfully, while not allowing media attacks on the integrity, roots and customs of Mexicans."

Calderon also endorsed a project to expand shelters for deported migrants in Mexican border cities.

I would urge some patience. Hopefully the city will start in on them and give them so much hell they’ll leave. I suggest you let the fence get about three fourths to fully completed before you drop the dime. Let them spend all their funds on the fence, before they have to tear it down. When they ask why you didn’t warn them, go ahead and tell them you’re sorry, and if they would have consulted with you on the fence you would have let them know about the ordinance and that they built across your property.

Then go inside your house, get a towel and laugh yourself to tears. It’ll be therapeutic.

Good luck. I’m sorry you’re having to go through this.

We need to put the 2nd Division on the border and reinstitute “Operation Wetback” to go after the criminals already here.

Let Calderon whine about that.

Step in and do what ? This is Nashville. We have close to 650,000 people in the county, scarcely enough people at codes to go out and check reports of violations, and it takes 3 hours (if at all !) for the police to come out following our complaints. No Mayor has ever given my section of town priority, and our brand new Mayor has every reason to ignore my area, since it overwhelmingly voted for his opponent (only the rich and liberal areas voted for him — all my Black and White neighbors and middle and lower classes voted for our ex-Congressman, Bob Clement, who was at least a moderate and not a leftist like our new Alcalde).

Unfortunately, patience is all we have, and that has about run out (I’d say it ran out after the first week). These criminals (and I have no hesistation in calling them that, they invaded our border, they’ve shown contempt for us and all the other neighbors with their behavior, though we get the worst of it, and have lied to us about a contact number to phone them — they only have cell phones) have been a nightmare from day #1. They literally get away with murder and us law-abiding citizens have to put up with their $hit. Frankly, if I see them start digging the trench down to the road — on OUR side of the property line, no less, I’m going out there with a sledgehammer.

They don’t speak English, so no whoop. I was realizing something else with that massive fence, we’ll have an artificial “sunset” at 3 in the afternoon as my entire front yard on this side of our driveway will be in the dark (or at least in shadow). Having to “guess” at the traffic coming from the west side will be fun, too, especially given how busy our street is now (as will be having to “guess” when our mail arrives, since with the fence up, I will no longer be able to see the mail truck unless it is right in front of the house. Yet another inconvenience).

What is really absurd is that, aside from a day last week when 2 of them happened to be in the front yard and were shooting me creepy and weird looks as I walked down to get the mail, they’re never out in the front yard (hell, all they did with their front yard was use it for parking and dumping trash — which of course all blew into our yard), so why would they build a massively long fence ? At least building one in the backyard for “privacy” makes sense — but the front ?

I’m wondering, since we may end up suing them for harrassment (along with contributing to our declining property values — our acre property and house are worth between 1/3rd and 1/4th what the exact same would cost elsewhere in the county !), can you also sue for obliterating the view ?

We should’ve moved 20 years ago (my father said we probably should’ve moved out after 4 years, so about 1978 — since this turned into a transient area by the ‘80s, people using it as a stepping stone from lower-class inner-city areas to more upper-class areas outside the county), but it’s a bit late now, and we have the added problem that we’re going to have a real problem unloading our property. It ought to be worth $300k (would be if it were in another neighborhood), and we’d be lucky to get $90-100k for it — for a whole damn acre and an 1800?sq ft house on a street that might expand to 4 or 5 lanes within a decade. We paid the mortgage company MORE than it was worth today by the early ‘90s (when it was worth maybe $140k or so). If it ever got rezoned commercial, that’d be the only way to unload it, but that’s unlikely to happen.

How about defending the rights of Mexicans in their own country?

No need for us to harass these ‘immigrants’. You can simply come and get them to be sure that they don’t suffer any further problems. We can have them delivered to any border checkpoint if you give us a place and a time.

You know, Mexico reminds me of a 16 year old spoiled teenager. They want everything given to them and then they complain about the means by which their parents decide to provide all of their sustinance and security and education. Talk about biting the hand that feeds (and heals, educates, houses and employs) you.

Mexico should be happy that we’re sending his people back. Most of them have learned skills here in the U.S. They have learned what it is like to work in a country where you can’t bribe or extort the police. Although they still do it to the average American. When they go back home many of his people will even be able to read and even more will go back with their diseases gone.

Instead of spending money on media campaign worthless propaganda, how about covering the costs of the free medical care and other social(ist) welfare benefits these "migrants" are getting in the US?

You can pay with cash or free oil.

Notice the word, ‘migrant’, used by Mexico again and again in this article. A massive wave of ‘migrants’ that can’t be stopped, according to Mexico. Let’s see, if a massive wave of US citizens moved south, that would be deemed ‘invasion’, illegal, and met with withering gunfire and many US dead.

What a bunch of horsesh*t. I sure hope this media campaign will show success stories IN MEXICO!

Pinging a few FReepers to another story that forgets to put "illegal" in their words.

Why don you fix your crap hole of a country so they wont have to come here to work!

You want to know why? Here's why.....

Last year, Mexican migrants sent home more than $20 billion in remittances, the country's second leading source of foreign income after oil. In the first eight months of 2006, remittances rose by nearly 20 percent over the same period last year, according to figures released by the Mexican Central Bank on Monday.

Old story but you'll understand the amount is much higher now.

President Felipe Calderon is another racist who doesn’t care how his “People” abuse the laws of the United States.

Another moron who believes in his “People receiving welfare they are not entitled too”, Long as “El Gringo” is paying the bill.
