The parents of more than 2,300 Prince George's County students who failed to get needed vaccinations could face fines of $50 a day and up to 10 days in jail if their children do not meet the state's immunization requirements, county officials said yesterday.
The threat of legal action is a last resort after months in which Prince George's has struggled to get its 131,000 students immunized for chicken pox and hepatitis B, as mandated by the state.
More than 2,300 students have not been immunized and have been barred from attending schools, almost two months after a Sept. 20 deadline for meeting the requirement.
"We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but it's got to get done," Prince George's State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D) said at a news conference in Upper Marlboro.
"I'm willing to move forward with legal action." School officials have made calls, sent letters and conducted home visits to make arrangements for free appointments for the needed shots.
But often the students' addresses and phone numbers have been outdated, making contacting them difficult. Other students have received the vaccines but failed to get the necessary booster shots.
The school system turned to the justice system as a final option and received the backing of Circuit Judge William D. Missouri, the county's administrative judge, and Circuit Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr., who handles juvenile matters.
"This is an educational crisis," said R. Owen Johnson Jr., chairman of the school board. "This is a public health and a children's rights issue."

Funny. i also recommend dirt-eating to young kids. :-)
Perry committed several felonies during the whole HPV mess. Maybe DOJ can get going on that now that we have an AG.
It’s like the saying goes, we defeated the Nazis then we became them.
Your taxes — and mine — pay for such things. It’s irrelevant where you live. You’re still paying for freeloaders.
Really makes you wonder who is getting the money for this.
We will find out sooner or later, and then these school board members will get a visit from some “interesting” people in blue.
My friends new born son got a Hep B vaccine.
After I found out, I told them of the (minor) complications I have had. I now can no longer give blood, because it comes up positive for the Hep B antigen.
We vaccinate kids much to young.
Do we think our government(s) is (are) to be feared?
I doubt it.
More than likely if you make to much of a fuss, you will get the visit. The State is to deeply involved.
Most kids do. Helen Keller didn't. My cousin who had measles at 18 months and ended up mentally retarded didn't either.
You’re right....I was wrong...and very roundly told so by you and most other Freepers. I was going by my experience and that was incredibly rude and self serving. I’m sorry. And I’m sorry about your cousin.
By the way, I didn’t know that about Helen Keller — I alwys thought she was born with her disabilities.
Oh well...a learning experience.
You're right! Thanks. B is still the really special one.
I like how the opening line of the article neatly uses the loaded word “needed” instead of “mandated.”
The day is coming...
I'm sure you'd also find some things that you may not like (like eating too much butter for instance) and you can force your ways upon us. Would this work for you?
Well, most of us did come through it okay, but not everyone does. I think one of the hopes of the chickenpox vaccine was that it would also prevent shingles in older adults, but I guess that remains to be seen.
An acquaintance of my husband almost died several years ago from chickenpox...for some reason, he caught it as an adult when his kids brought it home, and the sores became infected with strep.
Of course, there’s probably a worst case scenario for almost everything....
“I wonder what they will do about the illegals.”
Get translators, of course!
Little Johnny’s neighbors had a baby. Unfortunately the baby, was born without ears.
When the mother and new baby came home from the hospital, Johnny’s family was invited over to see the baby.
Before they left their house, Little Johnny’s dad had a talk with him and explained that the baby had no ears. His dad also told him that if he so much as mentioned anything about the baby’s missing ears or even said the word “ears” he would get the spanking of his life when they came back home.
Little Johnny told his dad he understood completely. When Johnny looked in the crib he said,” What a beautiful baby.”
The mother said, “Why, thank you, Little Johnny.”
Johnny said, “He has beautiful little feet and beautiful little hands, cute little nose and really beautiful eyes. Can he see?”
“Yes, the mother replied, “we are so thankful. The doctor said he will have 20/20 vision “
“That’s great,” said little Johnny, “cuz he’d be shat-outta-luck if he needed glasses.”
