When you’re a kid and you contract these diseases, you bounce back fairly quickly.

Most kids do. Helen Keller didn't. My cousin who had measles at 18 months and ended up mentally retarded didn't either.

You’re right....I was wrong...and very roundly told so by you and most other Freepers. I was going by my experience and that was incredibly rude and self serving. I’m sorry. And I’m sorry about your cousin.

By the way, I didn’t know that about Helen Keller — I alwys thought she was born with her disabilities.

Oh well...a learning experience.

Medical care has increased dramatically in the last few decades, at least since Helen Keller’s day. There are anti-biotics, anti-virals, and anti-inflammatories that could prevent a lot of the complications children used to suffer from.
