NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE SHAKES UP RACE FOR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION:

Nation’s largest pro-life group endorses Fred Thompson WASHINGTON – Marking the first major endorsement by a national grassroots organization in the Republican presidential contest, National Right to Life, the nation’s largest pro-life organization representing pro-lifers in fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, today announced its endorsement of former Senator Fred Thompson for President of the United States.

“As the first major grassroots organization to enter the Republican presidential race, National Right to Life is proud to endorse Fred Thompson,” stated Wanda Franz, Ph.D., president of National Right to Life. “Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompson’s long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win.”

In making its endorsement, National Right to Life considered the position of candidates on the life issues, their records on the life issues and their ability to win.

Fred Thompson has had a strong, consistent pro-life record throughout his political career. Thompson opposes abortion and believes the 1973 abortion on demand Supreme Court decision was wrongly decided and must be reversed. During his eight years in the United States Senate, he always opposed using tax dollars to promote or pay for abortion and supported the many pro-life measures such as parental notice and consent.

Thompson has also stated his opposition to the kind of stem cell research that requires killing human embryos, while supporting the kind of stem cell research that harms no one and is the only kind producing cures.

Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency.

“Unlike endorsements by single individuals, this endorsement was made by representatives of statewide pro-life organizations across America which themselves are comprised of local community chapters and grassroots activists,” said Dr. Franz.

The National Right to Life Committee is the nation’s largest pro-life group with affiliates in all 50 states and over 3,000 local chapters nationwide. National Right to Life works through legislation and education to protect those threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and assisted suicide.

I went with Thompson until he decided to take a week off after he started so late.

You're never going to get the truth by reading the headlines of the MSM. Fred didn't 'take a week off'. He had meetings in several states that week, they just weren't covered by the MSM. As far as energy level is concerned, I'm not looking to elect a Jack in the Box as President, I want someone who is deliberate in his actions and decisions. If you want to oppose Fred, that's your choice, but be sure you're HONEST in your opposition, don't just drag up old canards from the MSM.

They were impatient and it’s going to cost them, at minimum, the Life Amendment in the GOP platform. High price for a distant hope.

The 'distant hope' is the one that the HLA will see the light of day before another 35 years. I guess the NRLC has realized that, and is looking to actually DO something to save babies. They see that there is a REAL good chance to have Roe v Wade overturned, and since that is the major roadblock to all restrictions on abortion, it would be a MAJOR advancement of the pro-life cause.

"Thompson could have my vote if his supporters would see that he has flaw, and he needs to address it. "

I do hope it would take more than an annomyous poster on FR to cause you to vote for any candidate!

I think all the campaigns have been equally represented on FR by the "my guy walks on water, yours is the devil!" posters.

Heck, one poster even implied that I was a scurrying 'demon' because of my disregard of a man and his endorsement of a candidate! My brothers and sisters in Christ are like me, imperfect.

At a certain point we just have to let people live in denial. Fred does have a pro-life voting record, not because he believes in pro-life laws, but because he thinks the federal gov't should not have a say one way or the other. I'm okay with him on the pro-life front, though I do not think RTL should have endorsed him. But I had no say in the matter. Now the Thompson thugs can see if this club will beat down more voters. I'm still voting for Hunter.

Regardless...their timing was terrible. The odds of overturnig Roe are probably less than the odds of passing a HLA. Even Roberts said Roe was a settled precedent. Why not keep both hopes alive? Right To Life is the title of their organization for gosh sakes.

Fred can speak for himself. "The ultimate decision must be made by the woman." - Fred Thompson

You do understand that regardless of any law, if a woman is determined to have an abortion, she's going to have one, right?

All of the pro-life laws and/or Constitutional Amendments will never change that. In the end, the woman still must choose to do the right thing.

By making it harder, even illegal, to obtain an abortion, it will stop the more "casual" abortions where it is done as a matter of convenience, but that still cannot prevent the truly determined from doing evil. No law can, for any evil.

I agree: this is very good news for Thompson from a well respected organization that many people pay attention to for guidance on some issues.

He looks a lot more electable now than he did I guess when they started the process.

Kind of like Fred supporters correctly noting that his current slide in the polls does not mean he won’t be electable in another month.

BTW, they may well be correct about their assessment. I’m just nervous that Fred Thompson is NOT electable, that he’s just not got what it takes to convince people to vote for him.

If not for that fear, I’d be happy right now with both Romney AND Thompson.
