Recently reinstalled? The Danish monarchy goes back a thousand years, with an unbroken royal line of 52 monarchs. The Queen of England is a descendant of, among others, the Danish royal family.

He was a dictator who killed a lot of people, and accepted Fascist help during his country’s civil war

The people Franco killed were communists and anarchists who were destroying his country, raping nuns, killing priests, looting their treasury, and grabbing power after inciting a civil war. Franco, who was in the Canary Islands, resisted calls from other generals for help. It was only when the communists dragged out the equivalent of Dennis Hastert into the street and shot him that he saw he had no choice. Did he accept help from Hitler, absolutely. But the communists were being helped by America and the Soviets. Hitler did not want the Soviets on his flank and Franco needed help. Mutual self interest. He was the only leader to kick the commies out of his country in bloody street to street fighting. When all was said and done, he did not take a dime and returned the country to a democracy. As for the Spanish commies and anarchists, he buried them side by side at the Valley of the Fallen since he recognized them as Spaniards, misguided or not.

If Hillary comes to power and makes a power grab, which side would you be on? That's what he faced-and it wasn't a hypothetical.

No doubt because he is the king and can speak his mind freely without electoral repercussions. He's doesn't have to be political. That's probably the single remaining value of royalty.

Quite right. I was referring to Juan Carlos the Wise. My limited knowledge of history is that for decades during the 20th century Spain had no king, titular or regnant.

Right. Franco would not let Juan Carlos’ father, Don Juan, the heir to Alfonso XIII, who abdicated, back on the throne. Franco and Don Juan hated each other’s guts. But..Don Juan turned Juan Carlos over to Franco to raise when the boy was 10. He was educated by Franco and groomed to be his successor. After Franco died, Spain established a democracy and the Spanish people voted for Juan Carlos to assume the throne in 1978, making him the rightful head of state, not just a successor to the dictator. When an coup attempt was made to reimpose a military dictatorship in 1981, Juan Carlos faced them down and maintained their fragile democracy. Alfonso XIII was a very interesting character. To bad about Primo de Rivera.

Correct. The second Spanish Republic had a president, after that came Franco as "caudillo" (~ dictator).

History of Spain

After his death Franco wanted to see the monarchy restored, however, in a more or less absolute fashion. That's why he groomed J.C. as his successor. But as soon as Franco was dead, J.C. initiated a series of reforms which led to today's political system in Spain:

La transición

If that were the plan....Texas would be the LAST state that a sane inidividual would attempt such idiocy as the NAU, and if the other 49 would go along, Texas would be the first to secede.

Franco .... whose mother was Jewish...

Here's what Wikipedia has to say on this topic:

...both paternal and maternal grandfathers came directly from conversos, jews that converted in order to remain in the Iberian kingdoms or have access to posts in the Administration. And usually they carried a peculiar zeal in their new religion,in order to be confirmed and accepted by the christian community, preventing questioning (or Inquisition) about their identity, veracity of faith.

This post seems badly edited, so it may or may not be accurate. Some of you on this thread may know where to find the facts and edit the open-source posting on Wikipedia.

I think I wrote that his grandfather was the descendant of conversos. Many in Spain have conversos in their genealogical closet, probably most. His mother may have been part-jewish, ethnically, but she was a practicing Roman Catholic, as was his father. And since her name was Pilar, there must have been a Catholic in her family at least one generation back. Who knows? My best bet is that his converso ancestors converted early in the 19th century, when there was a lot of it going around. That said, during the German occupation of France, Franco allowed any French Jew who could get to the Spanish embassy in Paris to claim to be Spanish Sephardim, with a right to return to Spain, and supplied them with travel papers.

se ha olvidado hijo de puta socialista. (?que es un guebo?)

En Acapulco, Mexico "el pito" es lo que se llama "el guebo" en Sosua, La República Dominicana. Es la diferencia entre "guagua" y "ónibus".
