Juan Carlos and his wife, Sophia, are both good guys. Bravo for the king for telling off the brutal dictator.

Let’s not confuse medieval history with modern history. The original Moors were fairly tolerant of Christians and Jews and for centuries the Jews florished in Spain under Moslem rule. The tide changed when the more aggressive Almohades came into Spain to help their Moslem brothers bringing a wave of intolerance with them - even killing “lax Moslems”. Later, the Christians became intolerant of Moslems and Jews, especially the latter, kicking them out in 1492 and punishing their descendants who had converted to Catholicism by making them second class citiznes. The irony of history is that now it is the Moslems who are violently intolerant and are especially hateful towards the Jews. As far as I am concerned, Spain has never fully grappled with its own history.

They are trying to come to grips, in fits and starts. Have you read Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through Spain and Its Secret Past by Giles Tremlett. It is excellent. It also has a fine chapter on Cameron de la Isla, if you are into flamenco.

And not just any someone, but a someone held in high esteem by the Spanish-speaking nations. The Spanish newspaper comments are really hilarious.

Yes, indeed. I’m reminded of the poster of the GI (can’t find the link right now) that says:

“Have a nice big cup
Of shut the *&@* up.
Think before you say something stupid.”

From what I remember of the history of the Spanish Civil War, Franco brought a colonial army of Moorish troops from Morocco to Spain to fight against the 2nd Spanish Republic.

"The King of Spain and Aznar are good men. the current idiot who replaced Aznar deserves Chiraq’s fate."

The King's direct put down to hugo is priceless.

But I was just as impressed by Zapatero's preceding words:
"Former President Aznar was democratically elected by the Spanish people and was a legitimate representative of the Spanish people"

Might not like his politics but he took the high road.

Not exactly. Spain had an army of Spaniards in Morocco at the time, in which Franco had served and commanded, and he brought them home. He did not import Muslims wholesale into Spain during the civil war.

Sometimes I have fantasies of how Franco would be dealing with the Muslims in Spain if he were still alive. It would be a very different story.

Bravo. Standing ovation. Some sheeple have no idea what a great man Franco was and lump in with Hitler. There are those of us who realize what a hero of Western civilization Franco was.

Recently re-installed (or whatever you’d call it), as in the last decade or so, as I recall. Denmark also has a queen, Margrrethe II. And quite a lady she is.
