Great Six-Figure Jobs You Don't Need A Degree For
Forbes Magazine ^ | 5 November 2007 | Mathew Kirdahy

You don't always need that piece of Latin-laden paper to pull in six figures. You don't need to invent something to get rich. And you don't need to look far for a lucrative opportunity.

There are plenty of honest livings to be made in the U.S workforce that can earn you six-figure salaries sans a college degree. That's not to say you won't be required to undergo extensive training or work long hours, but at least you won't be lugging around that student debt. It's important to note that they're not all "blue-collar" jobs, a term that has become outdated when describing skilled-trade work.

The he lists are:

I’m an elevator guy. Not bad if you don’t mind a little wrenching and electrical troubleshooting.

I drove commercial truck for three years. First year was over-the-road (OTR) general freight - if it fit in the trailer, I hauled it.

The other two years was dedicated flatbed, hauling shelving for Home Depot.

It is very possible for an independent driver to GROSS a six-figure income. When the costs of the business are added - fuel, insurance maintenance, permits, just to start - that independent driver is NETTING less than the company driver.

I had this conversation once with a brother driver, while I was OTR, and a company driver. He was proud that he owned the rig, no company over his shoulder, etc. so forth. I compared my earning with his. He was mortified to learn that I, as a company driver was taking home more per mile than he was. I paid no fuel, no insurance, no permits; if the truck broke, the company fixed it; and he was on the road for months, while I got home on the average every two weeks.

So yeah, it’s possible to GROSS that kind of income. But the truck’s your business, and you’re working fo rthe truck, not for yourself.

Lion-tamers make good money, but a lot of it goes to their insurance premiums. :)

That’s true. It’s not so much about money as it is about vanities and pathologies in big business environments, IMO. They throw money out their windows every day to pursue their personal, social, political practices. I’ve done many contract and temp jobs over the years and have developed a strong stomach for compulsive, perverted propositions and spontaneous hysterical outbursts.

And technical documentation now written in the USA is most often downright funny in displays of pidgin English practices.

But I will install, configure and administer better networks for those who are good, after the coming higher dollar, higher freight fuel and announcements about nuclear weapons in Iran. ...might even write some better software as a bonus. ;-)

What’s a good 6-figure job for a man of about 50 who wants to leave his desk job in logistics behind? He knows his own industry and indeed the geography of the United States very, very well. What he wants is to break over the 6-figure mark which seems to be impossible where he is. He has a bachelor’s and is not opposed to some time off for training or education. He’s a hard worker, long hours, and personable. He can talk sports with the best of them and can be a team player or leader.

He despises sales. He’s stuck in L.A. for family reasons.

Any serious suggestions?
