State high court action could mean higher levies By NEIL MODIE P-I REPORTER
Tossing a potential grenade into the 2008 political scene, a divided state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Initiative 747, a 2001 measure limiting property tax growth to 1 percent a year, is unconstitutional.

They did this in California 30-odd years ago. It will be interesting to find out the details of this case.
At any rate, denying taxes to socialists is like not feeding your own children (at least that’s how the socialist sees it).

Surely the Left will protest the “will of the people” being overturned, yes?!
I’m not sure how legislation limiting tax growth to 1% could possibly be unconstitutional??

The PI really ought to be more careful about using language like that associated with stories like this.
The ACLU is mobilizing at this very moment!
Wow, thats a surprise (NOT)
I have lived my entire life in WA state and it really isn’t the state I grew up in anymore, or my Father or Grandfather for that matter. It really is sad sometimes. Too many imported liberals in King County.
Hopefully we can pass the thing again as a constitutional amendment and try, once again, to keep the Vampires to taking only a little of our life at a time.
I don’t know the basis for determining this is unconstitutional, but it sure seems fishy to me that the citizens of Washington can’t limit taxation when the clear majority have voted for doing so.
Are you folks able to vote these judges out? In California we took the State Supreme Court justice down (three of them) for opposing the death penalty.
Rose Bird was the Chief Justice, and we nailed her.
The justices claimed the people did not understand what they were voting for -— the voters were just too stupid. By the way, the esteemed Justice Bridges (who wrote the majority opinion) was convicted of a DUI a few years back. Nice to see the ruling elite looking after the unsophisticated little folks.
They are elected, but I never really hear all that much about the court elections. As liberal as the officials in WA state have become, I am ready to throw out all incumbents about now.
sounds like it’s torches and pitchforks time in front of the courthouse. When can the results of a referendum EVER be unconstitutional?
Find out who the five were and start talking it up. Get rid of those rat bastrads.
Good luck to you.
On Sitmann and Boes they were discussing this with Mr
Eyman. Apparently the taxing authorities in King Co
have the equivalent of a 22% rise in property taxes
“banked” against just such an opportunity to grap the
money (they money that isn’t ‘really ours’, because its
needed for the ‘common good’).
I had mixed feelings about moving here from TX, on one
hand the climate here is more to my taste but the general
attitute of ‘shared social responsibiliy’ and hatred for
our President, his advisors, and our Militar make me wish
for some good ol Parker Co Texas style justice for
a few elitists in the WA legislature and judiciary.
We passed a property tax limiting initiative, I-722 that limited tax increase to 2%. It too was tossed for a more technical reason than this initiative. The following year we came back with I-747 that restricted the tax increases to 1% and cleaned up the language that killed the previous initiative. The Supreme Court said the voters didn’t UNDERSTAND what they were voting for when they voted for I-747. We’re just too stupid, you see.
Read the ruling for yourself, provided you can read, we are pretty stupid here;

Maybe the judges need to be introduced to TAR and FEATHERS.
Our forefathers were smarter than we sometimes give them credit for.
at least tar & feathers...
