Clinton: Stiffed the waitress? Big tip found
Baltimore Sun ^ | November 8, 2007 | Glenn Thrush,

At first, the story line went like this: Sen. Hillary Clinton may have committed the ultimate political culinary sin -- not tipping the waitress.

But the story was wrong: NPR has retracted its initial report, a nasty little anecdote about iClnton meeting a working-mom waitress at the Maid-Rite eatery in Iowa over the summer, using her story in a speech -- and then stiffing her on the tip.

Now NPR has confirmed the tip with an editor's note: "Since this story aired, Hillary Clinton's campaign contacted NPR to say that the campaign paid Maid-Rite a bill for $100 for food for the day of Clinton's visit and left $57 in tip money. NPR contacted Maid-Rite manager Brad Crawford, who confirmed that a bill was paid and tip money was left.

"Crawford, who was not in the restaurant at the time, said that he believes a campaign staffer left the money with one of his employees, but "where Hillary was sitting, there was no tip left." Neither Anita Esterday nor the manager on duty that day were available for comment as of noon Thursday.''

$57 dollar Tip for a $100 dollar meal? If that is how she spends her money, I’ll be danged if I want her to handle mine.

"Since this story aired, Hillary Clinton's campaign contacted NPR to say that the campaign paid Maid-Rite a bill for $100 for food for the day of Clinton's visit and left $57 in tip money.

And the story changes again.
First it was $157 bill for food and a $100 tip left.
Now it's a $100 bill for food and a $57 tip left.

Pretty soon it will be Maid-Rite paid hitlery's campaign $100 to eat there and then the campaign gave $57 dollars back.

Just like a Klintoon, keep changing the story till you find the one the people like, and will believe.

Food servers get taxed on an expected tip amount of 15% of the bill. If you don’t leave a tip, they are actually paying taxes on money that they don’t receive.

“After the stink was raised we paid the bill and the tip”

A Clinton campaign staffer called on Esterday at the restaurant Thursday after the story aired. The staff member apologized to her and gave her a $20 bill, according to Esterday. The Clinton campaign confirmed that visit. The campaign also produced photocopies of receipts showing $157.46 was paid to Maid-Rite on a VISA card on Oct. 8 for meals consumed by the candidate's entourage. The tip was supposed to have been paid in cash, and the campaign insisted such a payment was made but has declined to make available a staff member who was present at Maid-Rite and left tip money.

Well, now we have more data, it looks like the bill was paid and it is now "very iffy" that $100 in cash was left as a tip, as the Clinton staffer says. Non of the waitresses acknowledge receiving a tip.

When this first broke I assumed that the tip was included on the credit card payment ... that is not the case. So the new information now puts onus the Clinton Campaign. The problem with the visit yesterday by a Clinton Staffer is that while she gave Esterday $20 she failed to provide a tip to the rest of the Ladies that were working that day!

KC, as you said, it is indicative of Hillary's character that she can't be bothered to be courteous to everyday working people. SNOB!

Funny how the Clinton campaign CHANGED their story at every turn and SOME people FELL for their LIES....time and time again. I take this as an apology from you.

"Who do you believe?"

*Not* the Glenn Thrush shill, that's for damned sure.

A little research might very likely reveal Thrush a shill directly connected to the Hitlery campaign?

...entertaining all bets. :o)

So now they have sent someone by with twenty bucks and this confirms the lack of personal attention by Her Highness.

Actually, it even extends it. If she had class it would have been a five dollar bill in a personal note card sincerly expressing her thanks for the vist.

I don’t even think she understands our culture. Perhaps the Politburo didn’t tip in the Soviet Union and she is confused about where Iowa is located.

"Funny, another news outley said the bill was $57 and a tip of $100 was left."

Yep! I read the same thing yesterday. Hillary stiffed them. No doubt and now we get to see their clumsy cover up. But what to you expect from the Clintons who deducted $0.25 cents per item of Slick Willy's underwear when given to charity.

Those dern contractions are slippery!

I knew what you met, I appreciate the correction from you. It’s important for when O’Reilly and other vindictive jealous people look for typos such as that to "prove" we are a hate site. Good job and thanks for the reply

It is not an apology. I based my comments about this story on the information that was available to all of us yesterday, not on an emotional gut feeling or parsing words. The information available, as of today, introduces doubt that the original claim, of leaving a $100 tip, is true. Just remember the second part of this ...

Liberals See What They Believe: Conservatives Believe What They See.

This reminds me of a now defunct site called flyinmysoup.com, where waitpeople told their tales of badly-behaving customers and lousy tippers.

Does anyone remember a few years ago, when the Freepers took up a collection for a server who waited on Hillary Clinton during her Senate campaign? I heard they managed to raise around $1500 for the single mom who brought enough food for two people to the former first lady, who stiffed her on a breakfast check that the manager comped. The server did receive apologies from Senator Clinton after writing her but didn’t receive a dime.

(Archived text from a 2/16/2000 press release)

Waitress Hillary stiffed gets apology but no cash

In Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Senate campaign, it takes a village to tip a waitress.
Mrs. Clinton called to apologize to the waitress she stiffed at a diner in Albion, N.Y., after she walked out on consuming two breakfasts on the house without leaving a tip.
But she didn’t say anything about making it up to her.
Since then, hundreds of residents of the big village called America, on reading about the incident in their newspapers or hearing Jay Leno’s jokes about it, have. Tricia “Trish” Trupo, 31, the single mom who waited on the first lady at the Village House Restaurant last week, has received hundreds of dollars in the mail.
Mrs. Trupo, an uninsured mother of an 11-year-old son who earns about $5,000 a year before tips, says Mrs. Clinton’s “personal planner” called her Friday to apologize for the first lady after she read about it in The Washington Times. Shortly after that, Mrs. Clinton called herself.
“She apologized for not giving a tip,” Mrs. Trupo says. “She said I was a sweetheart.” But she didn’t say anything about a forthcoming tip. “She didn’t offer and I didn’t ask.”
“I work for the waitress wage —$2.90 an hour plus your tips.
“Basically, you live off your tips. Me and my son have no health insurance at the moment.”
While neither Mrs. Clinton —who ate two orders of scrambled eggs, home fries and rye toast at the Village House Restaurant last Tuesday — nor any member of her entourage left a tip for the on-the-house meal, supporters have since sent in nearly $600.
Americans from as far away as California and Florida have sent cards and letters with money enclosed — mainly $1 bills. Some have enclosed $10 bills.
“A lot of them say, ‘You go girl,’ “ says Mrs. Trupo, 31. “Some of them say, ‘Good luck to you and your son. I hope this dollar adds up for you.’ “
Meanwhile, visitors to a conservative Internet site — freerepublic.com — have sent her more than $500, says Peter W. Kessler of Jupiter, Fla., one of the first people to suggest sending her money.
“I am amazed at the amount, the number of people who have jumped on this,” he says.
So far, the waitress, who earns $2.35 less per hour than the current minimum wage, hasn’t tallied all the money pouring in, but she has already thought about how best to spend it.
“I’m going to use it for education for my son. Because I’m a single mom and I don’t receive child support, this really helps.”
The story, first reported in The Washington Times, created a worldwide buzz, appearing in foreign newspapers and becoming fodder for late-night comedians. The word also made it back to Mrs. Clinton’s campaign staff.
Mrs. Clinton’s “personal planner” called first. Later, the first lady called. “I did not complain. A tip would have been appreciated,” Mrs. Trupo says. “If it was myself and someone picked up my check, I would leave a little bit extra.”
The next day, when Mrs. Clinton was asked about the tipping incident by a reporter in New York, she said, “That’s just another wild story.”
Toni McLoom of Carmel, N.Y., who lives about 20 minutes from the Clintons’ new $1.7 million home in Westchester County, says she and her husband sent Mrs. Trupo $10 after reading about the tip story on the Internet.
“My heart went out for her,” Mrs. McLoom said. She said the other New York Senate candidate — New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani — knows how to tip.
“Mayor Giuliani’s father owned a restaurant. . . . He can relate.”
In fact, Mr. Giuliani left a 70 percent tip at a Long Island diner on Monday after the story about Mrs. Clinton’s non-tip spread.
Says Mr. Kessler: “I bartended part time for quite a while. I know what it was like to serve drinks all night to the same guy . . . and turn around and see that he is gone and there’s not a nickel on the bar,” he said.
“All Hillary had to do was say, ‘Oh, gee, did somebody think to leave a tip?’ That speaks volumes about Hillary Clinton.”
