A Ho-Hum [Retail] Christmas Already? [lose all hope, all ye who click here]

Christmas is still nearly seven weeks away, and already the media are offering a “Bah, Humbug” for retail sales and the U.S. economy.

CNN shoveled coal at the positive economic news on November 2 and immediately moved into full Grinch mode.

“You know, just earlier this week the broadest measure of the economy, Kyra, the GDP, came in at 3.9 percent, stronger than expected. What’s working against it, though, the financials, concerns that we’re going to have a lot more carnage coming from that very important sector, consumer spending …” said “Newsroom” correspondent Susan Lisovicz.

Gloomy reporting about holiday sales is nothing new for the media. In 2005 the Los Angeles Times declared that shopping season was off to a “lukewarm” start, and CBS “Sunday Morning” declared Black Friday sales “were a bit flat.”

But all of that negativity didn’t keep Christmas from coming – in fact, retailers saw 6.3-percent growth of holiday sales in 2005. The National Retail Federation actually had to revise its sales forecast from 5 percent to 6 percent thanks to Thanksgiving weekend sales.

The media were similarly downbeat in 2006, using the terms “mixed performance,” “not so merry” and “lackluster” to describe seasonal sales – which ended up growing by 4.6 percent.

Thats certainly a step in the right direction. Now if we can just get them to put up HAPPY THANKSGIVING, and save the MERRY CHRISTMAS until after that.

I think credit’s fine if you use it sparingly and make regular payments. A good credit rating can come in handy when you need a loan.

I just hope that Willie can keep whining after the 24 quarters of solid growth we’ve had. It’d be a shame for him to die of frustration before the recession comes. LOL!

HDTV sales will make this one of the strongest Christmas retail seasons in recent history.

These are the same people that knew what General Petreaus’ report would say two months before he reported it.
Of course they know. They know exactly what the final tally will be on Dec.26 and they know its because we are in a deep depression and its Bush’s fault that Christmas is ruined this year and we are all going to die on Dec 26. damn that Bush!

Why buy them before Christmas, when everybody knows that electronics prices always go down after then, and the football playoffs aren't until after then, anyway!

90% of the crap that is bought at Christmas is stuff that nobody would ever buy for themselves. Some return of sanity would be welcomed by everybody who hasn't got a stake in seeing that there are enough fools out there to buy the communist Chinese made junk that has been dragged to our shores for this commercefest.

Hope so.

I'm heavily invested in a HDTV stock which is down really low at the moment.

I do not remember in the last decade (I can’t remember prior to that) of a Christmas season which was going to be ‘okay’, ‘better than expected’ or even ‘promising’.

Every single sales season gets talked down to protect retailer stocks. Period. End of story. Don’t believe a word of it.

WalMart starting Christmas early has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with a weak market. Its just the escalating arms race of Christmas selling. Anyone remember when Christmas decorations didn’t appear until December???? Or even the day after Thanksgiving? I’ve got Christmas aisles in my local drug stores since two weeks ago!!!!!

*Sigh*

Poison toys are so yesterday...

Don't you know Chinese toys are laced with a "date rape drug" now? Keep it quiet, everybody will want some...Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Wow, this is sounding like science fiction.

Oh, I agree. It really sounds unreal.

You just have to do you best to minimize your exposure to Chinese goods, as difficult as that is these days.

It's crazy to just sit here and let them poison us.

I think the media has done this every year of Bush's Presidency!
