Thompson: U.S. must secure borders
The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette ^ | November 6, 2007

Posted on 11/06/2007 3:17:41 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

White House hopeful Fred Thompson says the United States can no longer afford to have open borders.

The former Tennessee Republican senator says Americans particularly can't take that risk with terrorists threatening the nation with the worst imaginable weapons.

Thompson spoke at the South Carolina Veteran's Memorial outside the state Capitol as he named a new member of his national campaign team.

Thompson says Brigadier General James Livingston will serve as national co-chair of Veterans for Fred Thompson.

The 33-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps has been awarded several service medals, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Medal and a Purple Heart.

The other top-tier candidates seem to be shying away from illegal immigration and enforcing our laws. Why would that be?

Hunter’s criticism of this opportunist over this issue is well aimed. We need someone in the white house who isn’t a johnny-come-lately on this issue.

How is Congressman Hunter doing in the polls? So often, I can’t even find his name there...

Gosh, that’s the first time I’ve heard that retort.

Is this an immigration thread?

"The 33-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps has been awarded several service medals, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Medal and a Purple Heart."

The author of this article doesn't know the difference between a service medal and a personal decoration.

“Hunter’s criticism of this opportunist over this issue is well aimed. “

I wonder what Hunter’s opinion of the others who can’t even lift their heads up about this issue, would be? Like any of the other candidates would give Hunter the time of day, though I could see a cabinet position for Hunter with Fred.

No, this is a Thompson thread that you inserted Hunter into for some bizarre reason .

Two reasons: big business and agriculture want a supply of bodies for low-skill and low-paying jobs.

The third reason is a stealth reason: the Dems, to win in 2008, have to commit voter fraud and intend to do so with motor-voter via driver licenses.

***I suppose if they tried to steal his ideas he would be critical, but so far he seems to have kept quiet.

The immigration issues are important to a lot of republicans, and they need to know who is credible on this issue and who has just arrived conveniently upon this position.

At least Thompson is talking tough about immigration reform. Haven’t heard a peep from Rudy Mc Romney AT ALL. Strangest thing is that I would see people attacking Fred for being weak on border enforcement.

Because Hunter criticised Thompson on this issue. Maybe that’s bizarre in your book, but most republicans would want to know who is the strongest on certain hot-button issues like immigration.

***IIRC, Hunter criticised both Romney and Thompson on this issue. And we all know tootyfruityrudy is just plain ridiculous.

Oh, so this is not an immigration thread. This is a my-guy-polls-better-than-your-guy thread. OK. Maybe the title should be changed.

I don’t think Hunter is out of line to take Thompson, Romeny or any of the other players to task on this point, to a point. The problem as I see it is that Hunter hasn’t gained traction. That truly saddens me, because I do think he’s been in the hunt for a long time on this subject and I think he’s the best man.

The choices are more than likely going to be Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee and Thompson by primary or caucus day.

I’ll be voting for Thompson with those choices.

I would like to see Hunter and Thompson team up at some point. I hope Hunter doesn’t slam Thompson to the point that he won’t have anything to do with him.

A Hunter/Thomson ticket would be my preference, but I’d take a Thompson/Hunter ticket any day over the other possibilities. These two men would make a great team!

Of course I would have rather seen Thompson, as every other politician in Washington, as hot about the illegal immigration problem as long as I have, but Thompson is speaking out strongly and unequivically on this issue now.

That and the fact a number of reputable polls have Fred in the #2 spot nationally is good enough to earn my support.

Wave the flag for your guy, by all means. But it makes no sense to run down another good candidate in the process.

Its all about support. After a year of going nowhere, Hunter’s voice has been silenced. Just reminding everyone of political reality. You seem to be out on a limb. Hang on.
