Newtown (AP)_ The family of an illegal alien who was electrocuted while working at a town owned building in Newtown will be getting a $300,000 settlement.

The settlement will benefit the young daughters of Ivan Patricio Tenecela, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who was killed in 2004 when electricity from a power line shot through an aluminum ladder and shocked him.

The men were painting the outside of the Meeting House, a building that is maintained by the Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown.

The settlement is with the town of Newtown and the Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown as well as Campbell Quality Painting, the company that employed Tenecela.

At the time of his death Tenecela lived in Port Chester, N.Y.

Absolutely. In my opinion the solution to the illegal alien problems is pretty simple:

1) Build the fence
2) Fine companies that hire them
3) Fine landlords who rent or sell to them.
4) Fine schools which educate them

They will go home.

> I don’t know if the employer is on the hook here. It looks like the town settled for $300K. The employer might have been some fly-by-night operation, and essentially lawsuit-proof, because they have nothing to sieze..

That would blow. This is one more reason we need tougher legislation and enforcement of fines on employers of illegals.

Sigh.

There's plenty wrong with it. He ("estate") should not be compensated for injuries while committing an illegal act.

It only encourages others to break the law.

Interesting. Because one of the unmentioned attractions of using illegales, apart from the low wages, of course, has been the unwillingness of PC-fearing authorities to inspect the work they do with the same rigor as would be used on that done by local (legal) help. But if it turns out that they can get compensation even though they violate safety standards, that tends to balance the scale.

Using an aluminum ladder on a jobsite. Stupid.

Fiberglass is a much better and safer alternative. Stronger and last longer.

Who among you thinks an American in Ecuador as an illegal alien would have gotten such a settlement for his family if he were killed on the job? This country has gotten too damn soft.

Unfortunately, virtually no court considers the legal status of a plaintiff in a civil case. The employee got sued as well undoubtedly but the only money the illegals family would get would be Workers Comp which won’t be very much. So the family’s ambulance chasing lawyer sued the city who is the deep pocket.

But if I’m on the city council I make sure that we sue the painting company for the money paid to them for this contract since they broke the law. And then I call the INS and tell them that there is an Ecuadoran national they can go pick up at ..... address in NY.

Surprisingly, the town didn’t hire a union painter. Its hard to believe that in the NorthEast there is a politician anywhere who was brave enough to hire non-union for a public project. Of course, they might have insisted on a contractor who could actually legally do the work.

"Fiberglass is a much better and safer alternative. Stronger and last longer."

It's much heavier, and they both have roughly the same very long life span.

You are right, PB. I just did a ‘google’ using “Illegal Immigrants sue citizens”, and got 1,130,000 links.

It should be fair warning to everyone - even someone who mows your lawn could cut off a toe, and end up owning your house.

"It should be fair warning to everyone - even someone who mows your lawn could cut off a toe, and end up owning your house. "

That has nothing to do with illegal aliens. That's the result of socialist ideology and policies being imposed over the years by democrats.

Why? Do you think that if this man had been killed back in Ecuador, in some small town, that his family would be entitled to 300K? It’s a U.S.A. ripoff that American taxpayers are now responsible for, and that is just plain wrong.

The man was doing an honest job for the local govt.

The man wasn't working for the local government, he was working for a crooked contractor.

When a woman's wage-slave is damaged or broken by someone, either intentionally or through negligence, she is traditionally compensated for its loss. Much as she'd be compensated for the damage/loss of a mule. That's what much of our insurance industry is based on.

If, however, she brought her wage-slave into the country illegally, and put it to work then maybe she shouldn't be paid. Just as she wouldn't be compensated for the loss of a meth-lab employee if her illegal meth-lab blew-up, as I'm told happens in some communities.

< 'Wage-slave?' That sounds unconventional and critical. Is he allowed to say that?>

>>That has nothing to do with illegal aliens.<<

As I replied earlier, there are over a million pages of illegal immigrants sueing citizens of this country - and winning. The lawsuits are climbing at a rapid pace. They are getting very brave and legally savvy.

There are ambulance chasing lawyers drooling to give "free" legal representation to the illegal immigrants, and many of them are represented by illegal activist groups like La raza and MEChA. As far as I know, American citizens don't get free legal representation.

Example:

Two Illegal Immigrants Win AZ Ranch in Court
