October 2007 may turn out to be the month that immigration became a key issue in presidential politics. It hasn't been, at least in my lifetime.
The Immigration Act of 1965, which turned out to open up America to mass immigration after four decades of restrictive laws, wasn't one of the Great Society issues Lyndon Johnson emphasized in 1964. The Immigration Act of 1986, which legalized millions of illegal immigrants but whose border and workplace provisions have never been effectively enforced, was a bipartisan measure unmentioned in the debates between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale.
There was no perceptible difference on immigration between George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000. Both favored a comprehensive bill with legalization and guest-worker provisions. John Kerry in 2006 and 2007 voted for immigration bills along the lines supported by Bush.
Now, things look different. In the Democratic debate on Oct. 30, Tim Russert demanded to know whether Hillary Clinton supported New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's policy of issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. The forthright answer: yes and no. A clarifying statement by the Clinton campaign later in the week did not much clarify things: a hedged yes. It was one of several issues on which Clinton seemed to take calculating and ambiguous non-positions. But it is one that may have major reverberations in the presidential campaign -- and in congressional races, as well.
The reason is that the Democrats -- and Bush -- are out of line with public opinion on the issue. That became clear as the Senate debated a comprehensive immigration bill in May and June.(continued)

Barone is a bright man, but he has been wrong and clueless about just how explosive an issue this is (like so many of the inside-the-beltway types). A decade ago, it wasn’t in my top 5 of most important issues. Today, it IS the entire top 5... especially after they moved in next door to me in July. No peace ever since.
LETS MAKE THIS THE ISSUE!!!!!
?? Just curious. What do you mean by this because someone in my neighborhood retired, but decided to lease their home instead of selling. Now, it's illegalville!
Welcome aboard, illegal immigration has been my #1 issue for two decades, it has been my whole top 5 for a decade.
To think that y'all would want to keep illegal migrants out of our country, sent here by the Mexican government, drug cartels, communist Roman Catholic priests, and lovey dovy Protestants, and their agents here ( the religious net for immigrant aid who think they are a mmodern underground railroad), and the upper classes who want servants, all who have the BEST intentions for the transformation of the USA into a destabilized, fun, anarchists dream. Shame on you!
The World is a Village and we must allow the unwashed masses to inundate our shores!
Hablamos Espanol , los todos?
Better bone up on our new lingua franca today.
( SARC.)
I’ll vote for almost anyone who the GOP nominates, even if I have to hold my nose.
But I’ll campaign for and support with my sweat and money a candidate who makes this a top issue. And REALLY means it.
Michael Barone is way too calm about the issue. This is some of what's bothering us:
5 of 6 Men Arrested In 'Zip Tie' Case Indicted - PHOENIX
Thomas said four of the five men are being held without bond under Proposition 100 because of they are accused of being in the U.S. illegally. Some of them may have been previously deported, Thomas said.

We've got ghetto-builders. A bunch of illegals will either rent or buy in a nice neighborhood, pack it with 20 people...park junk cars in front of it...leave beer bottles and cigarette butts everywhere (apparently trash cans are a foreign concept)...and the housing values start to plummet. And of course, the neighborhood gets some real culture with the pimped out mid-90s Hondas with tinted windows that blast loud music from the 'home country' in the middle of the night.
For apartments and condos, it is even worse. You'll find 3+ families living in a 1-bedroom 1-bath.
They're living better than they ever did in the Third World sh#thole from where they came...but they're destroying the property values of neighbors who are here legally and refuse to live like animals.
What's interesting is the dynamic between these illegals and African Americans. The first neighborhoods they tend to destroy are the middle-class neighborhoods that are predominantly African American. Doesn't do much for racial/ethnic harmony...particularly when the few jobs remain in the neighborhood are taken by illegals and displacing the locals.
...”Ill campaign for and support with my sweat and money a candidate who makes this a top issue. And REALLY means it.”
Tancredo aside, the only candidate who has consistently walked the talk on this issue for many, many years has been Duncan Hunter. I hope that Hunter can count on your support in spite of the MSM being intent on choosing our nominee for us. And, related to illegal immigration, Hunter is the only candidate who has promised to have the border effectively secured in 6 months. As well, he has promised an immediate pardon for Ramos and Compean and is fighting the battle to prevent the CFR/OBL’s agenda for the NAFTA Superhighway towards a North American Union.
I don’t know where you live, but believe it or not the same thing is happening here, in OHIO!!!
I live in an apartment complex in a very nice Columbus suburb. Over the past few months, the parking lot has become full of autos you’ve described, untold numbers of people in a 2 bedroom apartment, none speak English, predominately ages 18 - 30.
New roofs are being installed throughout the complex. There are between 15-25 on the roofing crew and every single one of them is Hispanic, none spoke English. Not a single one is African American, Caucasion, etc. Same scenario with the landscaping company. (I tried to ask about the safety for my dog of the lawn chemicals, “no speak English”.) Every restaurant I’ve visited, from fast food, like McDonalds, to the better steakhouses, have illegals. Most use caucasion Americans as ‘front’ people...wait staff, hostess, cashiers...but bussers and the rest of the kitchen staff are Hispanic and speak little English. Churches advertise services for Hispanics. Newspaper ads for some apartments advertise in Spanish.
And you’re right, they are destroying every place they go. No matter what their current situation, it is better than where they came from, but the ‘culture’ seems to be one of entitlement, lending itself to irresponsibility, contempt, blatant disregard for our laws and void of assimilation.
I can only assume that if this is happening in Columbus Ohio, it is happening all across the country.
Indeed. My road to Damascus was about 25 years ago. I regularly played tennis with a hippie liberal (oh, he was a nice enough guy to play tennis with even if more than a wee bit deluded) and he did a lot of work with "disadvantaged" youths.
One day he sighed, I asked what was wrong and he said we'd soon have no country left unless we elected a fascist (his exact word, shall I say his uttering it "seared" it in my mind?) president that would put up a wall to keep out the criminals that were flooding the country and eject the ones already here.
Shocking words but especially from him. I started looking around and by gum this hippie commie was right.
I'm hoping we've finally reached critical mass and it's not too late.
That is precisely what we are seeing in south Georgia, in my small southern city.

The issue will be ignored if Hillary and Rudy are the nominees because they have the same views
Mexico and Guatemala are exporting their racial and poverty problems. Look at the illegals- they are dark-skinned, ethnically tribal, and back-country third world poor. Now, look at Vicente Fox.
You can be sure that it is. Especially here out west. Where I'm at, you don't get hired or elected if you are non-Hispanic. Business doesn't come in unless it can get past the crooked and cronied Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (yes... it's actually called that). The result, so far, is that the town I live in is a leftist, unattractive, dangerous, no-opportunity hellhole, full of crime, fraud and despair.
My sentiments exactly.
The people pushing Rudy as the nominee of the GOP must benefit from illegal labor and probably live in gated communities.
Illegal aliens are fine with them as long as their neighborhoods and estates are free of any chance of becoming a barrio.
Either that or the same thing is occurring all over the United States.
Not only is illegal immigration from Mexico the most serious issue of the Presidential election, it is probably the most traumatic foreign imposition in US history,
There has to be far more than "12 million," more like forty million.
Also any national politician who addresses the illegal question, without invoking Mexico's status, politics, and agenda, is sidestepping the problem.
The taxpayer can be expected to face up to the burden of Iraq, but not Mexico?
Thus we have the Council on Foreign Relations, patrician agenda ridden jerks.
What it means is:
The schools, public and private, have to slow down teaching because they have to teach
English to the illegals. At all grade levels because many kids come into this country well after 1st grade.
It means you have to stock up on paint to paint over all the graffiti and you must not confront a vandal for fear of retribution to you or your family.
You will get sick often after eating out. The news had an article last Friday where 212 mostly Hispanic workers at a chicken plant tested positive for TB.
Their families are so large that there is a party every other weekend and you have to put up with accordion music until 2 in the morning.
You may have to pay a referral fee for your next job of a couple thousand dollars if you are in the construction business.
If you own a small store you will have to pay for protection to the people that will rob or vandalize you.
It means while driving a car you look straight ahead and dont make eye contact with the people in the car beside you.
It means you can no longer park in front of your house because your neighbors have taken over.
It means the mail lady will not deliver your mail because your neighbors park in front of your mailbox.
It means you have to shred or burn your mail because they pick through your trash.
It means you have to be much more cautious when driving because they can turn in any direction from any lane and they dont know what a stop sign is.
It means that if you take a bus the only thing missing from the third world are chickens.
It means that after a car accident they other driver will flee.
It means that your car get hit while parked in front of your house.
It means your wife cant walk alone for fear of being followed because they think she is a prostitute.
