HUNTER CALLS ON ROMNEY TO OPPOSE BAIN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINESE COMPANY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 2, 2007

CONTACT: Gary Becks (619) 334-1655, dlhunter08@yahoo.com

San Diego, CA - - - Presidential candidate and current Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, today called on former Governor Mitt Romney to send a "clear statement" to the leadership of the company he founded, Bain Capital, to terminate a proposed business deal with a controversial Chinese corporation seeking to acquire U.S. defense contractor 3COM. Bain Capital is attempting to form a business arrangement with Huawei Corporation, a Chinese corporation founded by an officer of the Peoples Liberation Army of Communist China, which faces allegations of assisting Saddam Hussein in the targeting of U.S. aircraft and in helping the Taliban develop surveillance equipment.

"I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney's company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner," stated Hunter. "Forming a business partnership with a corporation known to have direct ties with terrorists and dictators while, at the same time, openly seeking to acquire a major U.S. corporation that performs vital cyber security work for the Department of Defense, can only be characterized as irresponsible."

A resolution has been introduced in Congress, H.Res. 730, which states; "The preponderance of publicly available evidence clearly suggests that as currently structured, the proposed transaction involving Huawei threatens the national security of the United States and should not be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States ." A copy of this resolution is provided.

Hunter stated in his letter to Governor Romney, "…while it is true that you no longer control Bain Capital, the contributions you have received from its principals as its founding member indicate that your influence within the company remains strong.

"Further, while the Committee on Foreign Investment has yet to rule on the Huawei transaction, this corporation's connection to Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and the Army of Communist China should clearly disqualify them from becoming, in the words of your former company, "a strategic partner" in acquiring a U.S. firm such as 3COM, which performs vital cyber-security work for the U.S. Department of Defense.

"This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do."

A copy of Congressman Hunter's letter, as well as two articles regarding Huawei acquisition efforts are provided. Media are encouraged to contact Gary Becks at (619) 334-1655 for additional information or to arrange an interview with Hunter.

Phil,

As I already posted I got this in a private e-mail from someone that I trust. I have not reason to belive that it is fabricated in any way. I don’t know if it is or will be posted on his website. I posted the contact numbers of the source that folks are welcome to call and verify... I am not sure what more I can say, I don’t speak for the Duncan Hunter campaign I am just a grain of sand on the beach :)

I have not reason to belive that it is fabricated in any way. I don’t know if it is or will be posted on his website. I posted the contact numbers of the source that folks are welcome to call and verify... 2 points. First, you should have made it clear in your initial post that this is an unverified "Press Release" from a source that you are, for whatever reason, unwilling to divulge. Second, I would suggest to you that it was more incumbent on YOU to "call and verify" prior to posting this alleged "Press Release, not the readers of this topic.

there is nothing “alleged” about the original post.. If you think it is “fabricated” than I would suggest that it is incumbant upon YOU to show evidence of that.. MY credibility is on the line everytime I post... and if something I post is KNOWINGLY FALSE I will be the first person to remove that source from my contact list.. and will at that time provide the source information to ANY person privately.... until then the post stands as is..

Hello,

This is not an unverified source. The release came out from Gary Becks. He is the media contact with the Hunter Campaign. It is not on the site yet because the two people that update the site are having computer issues.

I was simply stating that having reviewed some of your recent posts I don't see you as a "strong supporter of Duncan Hunter" so therefore when you post a comment like...

I support (and make no bones about supporting):
  1. Ron Paul
  2. Mitt or Fred (both have considerable merits as a nominee), whichever can defeat Rudi and win the general election.
  3. any other Republican in the field which can defeat Rudi
  4. Huckabee if he can defeat Rudi
I vote in a late primary. Chances are my choice will be either Fred or Mitt to defeat Rudi then the Hildabeeste.

I take it with a "grain of salt" in view of the fact that you have not publicly stated your SUPPORT for Duncan Hunter...

I have stated a broad general support for Hunter many times over the summer and fall. It's not my fault if he can't get any measurable poll support or raise money. Even Tancredo and Ron Paul are way ahead by both measures. As for Duncan's few straw poll victories, even Ron Paul has won a lot more of those than he has.

This kind of attack on Romney is the last flailing of a candidate that can't attract money, measurable support, or media attention.

As for RP supporters in general, my sense is that we like Ron Paul best, Tancredo #2, Hunter #3. Tanc scores higher because of a better fiscal conservative record, less pork barreling, a longer record on borders/illegals. However, I can't recall a single negative attack post on Hunter from the RP camp. That's because we do like him.

That statement is not exactly false. Bain was founded in 1984 by Mitt Romney, T. Coleman Andrews III and Eric Kriss.

It's not exactly true either.

It would be inappropriate for Romney to involve himself in Bain investments now, especially as a former principal and as a political candidate.

Romney can disinvest his Bain holdings or he can ignore Hunter. Most likely, he's already placed them in a blind trust. Those two options are the only two ethical choices he has. And I think Hunter probably knows that.

Romney will ignore this. And he should.

Romney being a founder is true. And since we have no way of knowing the interworkings of the business relations, we can’t comment on what is true in the current sense.

Right now, this is a National Security issue and I’m very sure they know more about this than we do. Bain can’t ignore Hunter. He is involved with National Security.

Look at Global Crossings. They are still trying to create ‘new’ business partners (Singapore Telecom) to get around the National Security ruling of 4 years ago.

If it were a national security issue, that's the job of the commander-in-chief and the NSC and the Pentagon. Or Hunter can bring a bill in the House.

And Bain will ignore Hunter because he didn't write this letter to them. He wrote it to an ex-CEO of their company no longer involved in their management.

This is grandstanding. Duncan had better come up with something better if he wants to get any traction in the early primaries.

you are a bit delusional my FRiend... if you can’t see the INTENSE media bias against Duncan Hunter, and the fact that the LEFT would be THRILLED if ANY candidate OTHER than Duncan Hunter wins the GOP primary.. than I can only conclude that you are either SUPPORTING the left (which I doubt, because you do seem to be an honest conservative), or are successfully being USED by the LEFT.... until we get closer to the primary you are anyone else for that matter can’t conclude that “Duncan Hunter can’t win”... I hope your eyes will soon be open and come over and help us get Duncan Hunter the attention he deserves.. if we are not successful come election day than we all must seriously ponder what in the world has happened to the GOP..

Duncan has received more warm media interviews than any of the second-tier except Ron Paul. More than Huckabee (until very recently), more than Tancredo or Tommy Thompson or the others. He has been on a lot of shows including his recent inclusion with DiFi on the CA fires. I don't see the big media bias against him.

Frankly, I still don't understand why he hasn't been able to do better. He has a good record in many ways, the fence thing is great and he really deserves credit on it, his commitment to the military is unquestioned, etc. But sometimes, a candidate just doesn't get traction. For that matter, many of us wondered why someone like Tommy Thompson couldn't do a little better. He had a great record as governor and really helped to lead the Gingich revolution early on as a governor. Great guy, solid, dependable...no traction.

.. I hope your eyes will soon be open and come over and help us get Duncan Hunter the attention he deserves.. if we are not successful come election day than we all must seriously ponder what in the world has happened to the GOP.

We can all say this kind of thing about "our guy". But I am a Republican and I want to vote Republican and I want to hold a positive view of every candidate in the field (except that leftwing mayor). So if "my guy" doesn't get the nomination, I'm prepared to summon some enthusiasm to vote for and send some bucks to my #2. Or my #3. Whatever it takes to beat Rudi and then the Hildabeeste (essentially, those two are the same candidate).

As for Duncan currently, what's really a shame is that he can't do better against Tax Hike Mike. If I were Hunter, I'd focus on knocking Huckabee out and grabbing his supporters in IA (currently polling 15% there).

Why does Duncan Hunter think any American Citizen should tell an American Company who it can and cannot do business with.

Duncan is the one sitting in the Congress that makes the laws about business relations with foreign countries, not Mitt Romney.

To Whom it may Concern:

I starting to view some of my fellow FReepers as HildaBeast enablers.... you seem to spouting the same garbage that folks who DO NOT want Duncan Hunter to get any “traction” — if I am wrong please tell me otherwise... if you REALLY think Duncan Hunter deserves to get some traction as you say you do you sure are working hard against him... and please don’t give me the.... “if I thought he could win I would support him”...... That is pure propaganda BS, intended to keep folks from taking a serious look at him.... and you either know that or you are deceived my friend.. I hope to see you on the Duncan Hunter team sooner than later.. because if you jump on board later, when it becomes “popular” to do so.. which I and many others hope will soon happen.. than I hope you remember this conversation.. until them.. I am done spinning my wheels with you my friend.. no offense.. but I have better things to do with my time that go back and forth with a coward (NO I AM NOT CALLING YOU A COWARD).. I don’t know what your intentions are... but if you fall into the category of folks who WANT to support Duncan Hunter.. but will only do so AFTER it becomes popular to do so.. than YES I am calling you.. and everyone else that fits into that category a coward........With that.. I got a war to go fight...
