Hillary launches preemptive debate strike

Expecting rival Democrats to unload on her at tonight’s debate, aides to Hillary Clinton are trying to frame the attack with a cheeky Web feature headlined “The Politics of Hope.”

The posting is intended to focus viewers, voters and pundits on the attackers rather than the substance of the attacks, which is a standard practice of the Clinton campaign.

The feature went up this morning on HillaryHub.com, the campaign’s official news site.

Among the posting’s unusual elements are links to articles featuring attacks on Clinton. That showcases her campaign’s effort to convince Democrats that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has turned his back on the new kind of politics he once had promised.

Making his national debut as he delivered the keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in 2004, Obama asked: “Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?”

Clinton’s campaign links to a YouTube of Obama at the Democratic National Committee winter meeting last February, saying: “Over the next year of a primary and … the next two years leading to the election of the next president, the campaigns shouldn’t be about making each other look bad. … [O]ur rivals won’t be one another. … We are tired of a politics of division. We are tired of politics of fear. We want a politics of hope. We want a politics that unifies this country.”

The Web feature then links to headlines about the vow by Obama and his campaign to be more aggressive in pointing out differences with Clinton, including “Obama Taking Gloves Off,” “Taking Aim at Clinton” and “Obama to Showcase Tough Side.”

A second YouTube shows John Edwards, who attacked Clinton yesterday as part of a corrupt “political dynasty,” themes similar to the idealistic Obama, and even using similar words: “Let me say this VERY simply. If you are looking for the candidate that’ll do the best job of attacking the other Democrats, I’m not your guy. I believe this election is much bigger than that. … Our campaign is not based on the politics of cynicism. It’s based on the politics of hope. … We don’t believe in tearing people apart. We believe in bringing people together.”

A HillaryHub headline then links to: “Edwards Shifts Focus To Integrity.”

When asked yesterday about a speech by John Edwards accusing Clinton of coziness with lobbyists and corporations, her campaign replied with an attack on the attacker: “If Mr. Edwards is so concerned about the influence of special interests, he should give back the hundreds of thousands of dollars he's taken from health care, securities, and insurance companies.”

The two-hour debate, at Drexel University in Philadelphia, begins at 9 p.m. Eastern on MSNBC. It's moderated by NBC's Brian Williams, with questions by Timothy Russert.

“The Politics of Hope.”

As in: "I HOPE she never wins another election, and I HOPE her presidential aspirations go down in flames."

I just wonder if Obama Osama will be asked about his loyalty to the “Country” he is running for President of? He loathes our Anthem! Says it promotes war! This idiot is toast!

Just once I’d love to see the candidates take Hillary HEAD-on and really hammer her for her illegal fundraising activities, make her come so unglued that her voice becomes “THE SCREETCH HEARD ROUND THE WORLD”...just before Halloween even!

Just another attempt by Hillary to misinform the public.

I will never understand why people would talk to a woman, much less try and elect her whose husband is a rapist and who along with her husband are in the drug trade.

Well, if Obama wasn't so busy appearing on Ellen or Tyra Banks, he could perhaps go on offense and blast Mrs. Clinton. When discussing his campaign last night, Bill O. asked--what's next, Dancing with the Stars???

She hopes no one will ask her any things she can’t remember.

I'd like to see them take her head on, too. The response should be nice deflection, but now answer the question.

Should have happened with Rudy at the GOP debate also. Don't let anyone get away without giving a real answer.

Smart strategy on her part... What appealed to people about Obama was his “freshness” and “optimism” and, dare I say it, “new tone.” As his attacks on her have increased, he’s now enabled her to say his “new tone sounds like the same old tone of negative campaigning, bla bla bla I think Americans are ready for a change.” Maybe throw in a “politics of personal destruction” to spice it up a bit.

Obama seems not to have noticed that his slide in the polls corresponds to his going more negative, and he’s giving Hillary a tremendous weapon. She doesn’t have to say hardly a thing about him, just express disappointment that he’s thrown away all the excitement he built up by running a typical, negative campaign.

What’s worse (for him, but fine with me) is that he’s also throwing away any chance he had of a place in the administration should Hillary win the presidency. She is NOT forgiving.

No, she is definitely not forgiving. Which makes me wonder how these two are going to be able to work together in the Senate when they both lose.

Obama never did have a place in the Hillary Administration. She doesn’t need him to win the election. She won’t need him to do the things she wants to do as President. One thing the Clintons are good at is using people. That includes knowing who is most useful to them and who isn’t. Obama isn’t on any list Hillary might be keeping other than maybe a hit list.

Exactly-blacks are already locked on the democRATic plantation for all time. She also doesn’t want someone for VP who will outshine her as a speaker, etc;which is why her VP choice will be, as I’ve said for months, “Lou Costello” Richardson.

You could be right, although Richardson's appeal is primarily Latino voters, and I think she has those sown up. He could deliver NM back in to the 'Rat column, however.

My guess is she picks a 'Rat Governor of a key swing state like VA or OH, one that she knows if it tilts to the 'Rat column it delivers the country to the 'Rats. I suspect my Governor, Ted Strickland, might get a call from Hillary sometime during the convention. OH turned blue in the '06 elections and is ripe to fall to the 'Rats. That's 20 electoral votes for the 'Rats that they haven't had in the last two elections, and leaves the 'Pubs in a huge hole on the electoral map.

Well, whatever way it goes, you can bet yer ass the Clintons have had it all planned out for months, before they (yeah, plural) even announced. They do NOTHING on the spur of the moment.

They do nothing without forethought, and nothing without a political calculation. Remember, Hillary is an Alinsky apostle. His technique was, take over the system from within, and use the rules as a means to your end, especially when you can use the rules of the system against your adversaries. When you can't, circumvent them, use goon squads and character assassination and smears. If that doesn't define the essence of the Clintons, nothing does.

Looking at the history of the Clintons, I think Hillary has planned her campaign to become President going back to the '70s and the Watergate era. She weaseled her way into the machinery that brought Nixon down, then hooked up with Bill Clinton as a way to ride to the top on his coattails, then break out on her own. Her earlier time as Arkansas First Lady was to weasel into the WH on Bill's heels. Then she used that as a platform to carpetbag her way into the Senate, choosing the state most likely to elect a carpetbagger 'Rat, simply because of the "D" after then name. The sojourn in the Senate was simply to position for a run for the Presidency on her own. Like Alinsky teaches, it is a long-term, well-thought-out plan to achieve an end, working from within.

If Hillary! has any weakness, it it her love and lust for money and possessions as well as power. She's as interested in accumulating personal wealth for herself as any "decadent capitalist" she rails against. It may bring her down in the end, but I have my doubts, since the Clintons skate on things that would get anyone else tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.
