Angry immigrants demonstrate outside Gov. Spitzer's Manhattan home Sunday against license plan.

Amid the furor over his plan to give illegal immigrants driver's licenses, Gov. Spitzer Sunday tried to dampen the uproar, arguing the privilege of obtaining one was no higher than buying a MetroCard.

"I don't think it is a privilege any more than buying a MetroCard is a privilege," Spitzer said on New York 1 News of his three-tiered license plan. "When we walk down into the subway system to buy a MetroCard, no one says, 'Prove you are a citizen'; no one says, 'Where did you grow up?'"

But Republican rivals threatened yesterday to erect roadblocks to stop Spitzer's program, and even advocates for illegal immigrants called the governor a traitor for tailoring his proposal to appease federal officials.

Spitzer initially proposed one driver's license for all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status.

But after meeting in Washington Saturday with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, he revealed the new three-tiered plan.

Under the plan, the traditional license will be available to everyone, including illegal immigrants. The two other types will be available only to citizens and legal immigrants - and all require proof of identity.

Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco vowed to slap the governor with a lawsuit this week to upend the new policy. "He's breaking the law, and his technology for scrutinizing immigrant documents doesn't work," Tedisco (R-Schenectady) said.

Steamed eggfaced roll and a side of foot in mouth.

Spitzer is doing a great job in getting swing districts to vote R on Nov 6.

Getting it from both sides. Maybe, just maybe, he should have thought about this a bit more.

The Chinese "community" is overflowing with illegal aliens

I remember last January 1st  an illegal alien Chinese woman won a first baby of the new year prize and the Ch community cried bloody murder when Toys R Us tried to withhold it as the contest rules stated. IOW you had to be a citizen or legal resident

Or try to vote with a Metrocard. Pay your fee and cast your ballot. Getting illegals to vote is what this thing has been about all along.

“When we walk down into the subway system to buy a MetroCard, no one says, ‘Prove you are a citizen’; no one says, ‘Where did you grow up?’”

No one says a Metrocard is proof of identification either. Maybe he’d like to do away with the driver’s license exam too, because no one makes you take a test to get a Metrocard?

"I don't think it is a privilege any more than buying a MetroCard is a privilege,"

Driving is not a privilege? I like it.

Not a bad analogy. We shouldn't allow illegals to have Metrocards either.

Arrogance is such a great thing when is causes a sleezy RAT politician to actually overreach.

It is conceivable Spitzer may never quite recover from this.

So the next time I get pulled over by a Statie I can show him my metro card?

http://www.1010wins.com/Spitzer:-New-Driver-s-License-Plan-is-Safer/1143368

Gov. Eliot Spitzer said Sunday that his new plan to make it easier for illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses while creating one of the most secure licenses in the nation is the result of conversations with an old friend, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

(snip)

``I think the statement from the secretary of Homeland Security that we now have among the most secure license in the nation is important,’’ Spitzer said. ``The first objective is security ... It is perhaps stronger now that we have the acknowledgment of the director of Homeland Security.’’

Spitzer said he has known Chertoff for more than 10 years, going back to Spitzer’s life as a prosecutor and before, when Chertoff’s wife went to Harvard Law School with Spitzer. Spitzer said long, collegial conversations with Chertoff over several weeks led to the change in policy.

(snip)

And who the heck would trust anything Chertoff said anyway?

I’ll be calling my Oklahoma State Senator and Representative today to suggest legislation that denies recognition of New York State driver licenses in Oklahoma because of the security issues surrounding this move by the Governor of New York.

And to think I’d complain about Pataki. Compared to this arrogant punk that’s in there in now I’d take him back any day. Who was upset when he strengthened the requirements for licenses besides the illegal alien mouthpieces? Everyone was glad he did it.
