OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. Fire ravaged a beach house occupied by more than a dozen college students early Sunday, killing seven and sending several more to a hospital.
Six survivors were released after treatment, including one who jumped from the burning house into a waterway, Mayor Debbie Smith said. Officials had accounted for all of the 13 people believed to be inside the home, Smith said.
"There were three kids sitting on the ground screaming," said newspaper deliverer Tim Burns, who called 911 after seeing a column of smoke rising from the house. "There was one guy hanging out the window, and he jumped in the canal. I know he got out because he was yelling for a girl to follow him."
Burns said he didn't know whether that girl was able to escape.

That is so sad.
I’m so sorry to hear this.
How awful. Prayers up for all the parents, friends and relatives of those who died; and for the recovery of the survivors.
During my first year of college a young woman left candles burning which burned down her dorm. Miraculously, no one was hurt.
One of my greatest fears as a parent is having my kids in a place where fire might occur (for any reason). Once fire starts it’s hard to get out of the smoke and out of a burning building.
My heart and prayers go out to the dead kids’ parents and those surviving kids.
This is so sad.
Wow. You think this beach house was zoned for 13 people? The article says it had “working smoke detectors” but I think all they can say at this point was that they had smoke detectors, maybe not in working order.
Those things go off at the first sniff of smoke and if that had happened I doubt they would lose so many people.
Let me preface what I’m about to say with one simple fact: I don’t drink. Ever.
That said, I’ve slept through a smoke detector that would put a locomotive’s horn to shame. If you’re tired enough, it simply won’t wake you up, and add in booze, which I’m sure is the case here...
Oddly enough, the sound of a computer POSTing or even the distinctive sound of the fans shutting down is enough to jolt me instantly awake, no matter how exhausted I am or how deeply asleep I was. But the blaring, shrieking fire alarm? Nada.
Prayers for all!
Just horrible...prayers for all involved...
Very sad story. I would not be surprised if a smoldering cigarette was the source of this fire.
Greenville News is breaking that some of the deceased are from Greenville. So, sad. Prayers for the families and surviving students.

When I was in college, the Kappa Sig house burned down and 5 good friends of mine perished in the fire. My sorority sisters and I, along with half the campus, were outside the house not realizing that several had died. How sad the whole campus was when we discovered that 4 fabulous students and one alum had died. That is one day and memory I will never forget.
Well, hello there! Check the house, info., pics of the SC Tri Delts: http://web.sa.sc.edu/tridelta/homepage.htm
My prayers are with all. A very sad, sad story.
Fair enough.
