There is great hostility to Govenor Huckabee by many freepers. Since Rasmussen is including Huckabee in the daily tracking poll, it seems he is gaining some traction. I am curious since many on this site have grave doubts about a Huckabee presidency, how many would go to a third party or would just stay home?
Well with Tommy Thompson out of the race, the sad fact is that every one of the candidates who have held major office (i.e. the non-Congressmen in the race) are flawed on one or two major issues. Romney is, McCain is, Fred Thompson is, and Huckabee is. Giuliani is flawed on just about every issue besides the War on Terror.
So if we want a rock solid across-the-board conservative, the choices left are Tancredo and Hunter, but their odds of winning the GOP nomination are extremely slim to none.
Otherwise we have to weigh the remaining the candidates and decide who has the least leaky boat. IMO, that's Huckabee. Fred Thompson was just as willing to grant amnesty a few monthes ago and he won't even push the FairTax plan or endorse the marriage protection amendment that Huckabee has warmly embraced.
Granted, Huckabee's record on taxes and immigration leaves much to be desired. But these freepers trying to rewrite history and pretend he was an evil RINO governor flies in the face of facts. You can look up any Huckabee thread from 2005 and find he was wildly popular with FR after nine years of his supposedly "liberal clintonite reign".
No problem. When you look up his "record" and discover Fred signed a Tenneeseeans for Choice questionaire saying he was OKAY with the status quo from Roe v. Wade, and when Fred refuses to support a marriage protection amendment, you guys can't use that excuse either. You thought of a much better one. Why, he just being a good "federalist" by refusing to combat abortion and the gay agenda! And all good "federalists" know its up to the states to take care of hot button issues like that (worked wonders during the slavery crisis in the 1850s, didn't it?)
If only Harriet Miers had thought of that one. "I just being a good federalist when I signed that stuff!" Coulda made it onto the Supreme Court.
Tsk, tsk.
Billy, I find it remarkable that you manage to defend some of the most odious RINOs out there while you take swipes at good candidates like Fred. If Fred was so pro-abort and pro-gay, why does his voting record indicate the opposite ? Similarly, why do you then take the word of Precious Willard and Huckabee whose records are clearly dreadful and then “all of a sudden” they now start to take an opposite stance when running for President — mere months after exiting their Gubernatorial jobs ? How convenient. Fred never changed his basic core values. He doesn’t need to be President. But for politicians like Huckabee and Rudy and Precious Willard... they do need it. It’s all they have now. It’s precisely why they should never attain it, and why Fred should.
You apparently have never run across any of my postings or discussions between Arkansas FReepers.
Frankly, as an Arkansan, when the Huckster was our governor, he was our state's personal embarrassment and wasinsignificant in national politics and didn't warrant the attention. Now that he's carrying his snake oil "conservatism" into the national spotlight, I've been doing everything I can to educate FReepers of the Huckster's true colors (and it ain't conservative red).
So I offer to you the opportunity to enlighten yourself about the Huckster's real political leanings, with the following list of articles:

Reasons why Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is a RINO and no longer fit for public office
From TheBattman - 6/7/7:
Long and short on Huckabee from his record:
Positives:
1. Has been very strong on gun rights (CCW, protecting gun makers from stupid lawsuits).
2. Pro-Marriage: Marraige protection Act was his baby along with covenant marriage.
3. Pro-life
Negatives:
1. Supported taxes (Old-fashioned Tax-and-Spend politician)- engineered a 3% state income tax surcharge (a tax on the tax you paid in income tax) that was supposedly to make up for budget shortfalls - and then kept in in place a year longer than was necessary (and promised).
Raised fuel taxes
Encouraged the use of sales tax as an easy means of revenue boosting.
Opposed all efforts to reduce the sales tax on groceries and prescription drugs, even in years with a budget surplus. Heck, our new Democrat (liberal at that) Governor, under public pressure, agreed to a reduction in grocery sales tax...
2. ArKidsFirst - One of the larges social spending programs in Arkansas history was his baby. I dont have a problem with helping low income folks get medical care, but I know many folks on it that could afford regular coverage - but why when big gubmint will give it free?
3. Big Government - Huckabee, between his socialist healthcare moves, his heavy hand regarding tobacco use, his mandatory search lunchboxes of school kids health initiative, and massive expansion of most social programs...
4. Poor record of political appointments - just one example - Sheffield Nelson on the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission - who has single-handedly tarnished the organization and really pissed off sportsmen in the state with his obstructionist and blatantly anti-regular Joe initiatives.
5. Illegal Immigration - Huckabee actually called anyone against illegal immigration (those who wanted to prevent free tuition to illlegals, free social benefits to illegals, etc.) non-Christian.
6. Party Affiliation - Huckabee has chosen in the last couple of elections to not be supportive of Republican candidates, including Lt. Governor, when they were a solid conservative choice, preferring more moderate or even liberal candidates.
Im sure there is plenty more (maybe both pro and con) that others can add.
No. No third party if Mr. Huckabee is the candidate.
I wouldn’t be very happy with him, but I’d vote for him.
Huckabee, along with Romney, is just barely on my “I’ll vote for him - if he wins the Primary - and I’m votin’ against him in the Primary.”
