Israel gets 'Chinese' admiral
JTA ^ | 10/27/07

(Yeah, such an 'apartheid' 'racist' state) -

The Israel Navy's new commander is of Chinese descent, a first for the military top brass in the Jewish state. -

Admiral Eli Marom -- nicknamed "Chiney" -- took over as navy chief this month after his predecessor, David Ben-Bassat, quit amid criticism of his conduct during the Lebanon war. -

Marom's mother was a member of the Chinese Jewish community, born to a local man and a Russian emigre woman. She married Marom's father after he fled his native Germany for China during World War Two. In 1955, the couple moved to Israel, where Marom was born. -

Marom's asiatic appearance may have helped him advance in the Israel Navy. -

"The fact that Chiney looked different forced him constantly to show that he was better. He became one of the very best very quickly," one former comrade told the weekend Yediot Acharonot, which ran a profile of the new admiral. -

Marom, 52, trained as an engineer and ascended through the ranks, overseeing major naval operations such as the 2002 capture of an Iranian-supplied weapons ship en route to Gaza.

The IG report faults Paris Station Chief Dick Holm for not keeping the Ambassador fully informed and for allowing an affair between a Nonofficial Cover officer and her French lover to continue. Europe Division Chief Joe DeTrani "has been placed in administrative limbo.">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If not Plame, then must have been a fellow contributor to the DNC. It just sounds so sophomoric, typical Plame /Africa snuff box stuff, where love attempts to conquer all in espionage. Michael Moore could do a movie on it, LOL.

I wonder where she is now? Probably working for amnesty international.

"if the[y] called him 'Irish', a common nickname, that would be “Racist” too?"

If he didn't want to be called that, then yes, it would be mildly discriminatory, though not necessarily racist.

"It’s already been explained by me - last time ENDING it and Stuffing the Other Israel and Jew-Haters Here"

Have a hunch--actually more than a hunch; very compelling evidence from your comment(s)--that you are being very hypocritical about 'racism' here. You deride the idea that the use of 'Chiney' is racist (and if it is, it is only very mild), and yet you object to legitimate criticism of Israel as being from "Israel and Jew-Haters."

You [shout] 'racism' in your own way as much as the most trigger-poppy anti-racist (more than personally).

This is sort of deja vu, once had an ethnic Jewish (and [very] nominal Jewish--he could have eaten a mushu pork sandwich once, and he dated a Mormon) acquaintance who was quite the verbal racist, making snide comments particularly about Asians, but also about Latinos and those of African descent (and Asian/Latino descendants). However, when faced with the argument that a group of American neo-Nazis had the constitution right to march through a town where a lot of Holocaust survivors lived, he went livid and--as you've done here to a lesser extent--started [shouting] 'racism.' Guess it's acceptable when its another group being maligned, but not when your group is the one being targeted. Anyway, people agreed that the neo-Nazis were bad, and they didn't support their stance, but they could see that constitutionally the neo-Nazis had the right of assembly to demonstrate through the town. The Jewish racist was shocked and proceeded to refer to those constitutional-grounded as 'Nazi.'

So far, the comments here have been neither anti-Israel nor anti-Jewish, and if Mr. Marom was called 'Chiney' here, whether proper or improper, it probably would not be all that tolerated.

abu, now you would have a case. Jewish noses and ‘Chiney’ are at around the same level—if you want to push it to the extreme, they could be discriminatory, but most Jews and Chinese (or Jewish Chinese/Chinese Jews) could easily put up with it and shrug it off.

Why? (rhetorical).

Now, this passes the criteria for racist.

P.S. Will agree with you that bringing up the 40+ year old USS Liberty incident is almost pointless, especially on this thread, which is about a partially Chinese descended Jew referred to as ‘Chiney.’

People give other people nicknames for two reasons: Either they hate them deeply, or like them a lot. Here, it doesn’t seem like a case of hate.

I assume at this point in his career and this Status, he doesn't mind or ot wouldn't be announced witrh such. There are more reasons than just those two. It could be a common label for Chinese/Chinese descendants in Israel.

Would concur that the 'Chiney' name calling probably doesn't have a hateful motive behind it, though.

Sorry Abu Afak, that is simply not credible, nor even believable.

So all of this had to have happened for the “official” report to be true:

1. The ship was noticed in the area, then mistakenly taken off of the tracking board.
2. The “first” IDf plane that passed through the area and exchanged pleasentries with the Liberty somehow never mentioned that they had notice the Liberty.
3. The Liberty was traveling at 5 knots, and the flag was not waving.
4. The pilots who circled the Liberty, then attacked, didn’t notice that it was Latin writing on the ship, and that they didn’t bother to ascertain the target before attacking, the Liberty was moving much more slowly then the Ad Alawi.
5. There was no radio jamming, the operators on the Liberty just decided not to radio once the attack started.
6. The mirage pilots didn’t bother to ascertain the identity of the Liberty, they just were attacking random shipping..
7. The signal light operators on the Liberty where incompetent, and did not finish their messages, the just though AA was sufficient and stopped signalling after AA

8. The torpedo boats didn’t notice the lettering on the Liberty, nor the flag, nor anything else, they were crewed by Gilligan’s and no Skippers...

And “if” there was no jamming, why didn’t the IDF’s Signit section intercept the distress call?

“Sorry’ abu afak, I think Israel is our best ally in the region, I also believe the twin attacks on the Liberty were with malice aforethought.

And “yes” I’ve read the NSA transcripts, I’ve read the fact that the NSA refuses to release all of the documentation of the event, and that there are gaps on the tapes that the IDF provided, and that LBJ and Bob McNamara basically sacrificed those men for reasons that we have yet to find out.

The torpedo runs were the final evidence for me, they can say what they will, but the actions and plain common sense speak otherwise.

Hear Hear!

I think Chiney is just a funny nickname.

Israel is a pretty cosmopolitan place.

Is there a Chinese version of kosher food?

I know there is a Yemeni version that is very different from what we think of as “Kosher” things like Mtn Oysters for example...yummm yummm

"Sorry, I refuse to believe that Israel "accidentally" attacked a ship that it had been surveilling for over 9 hours."

It wasn't an accident. It was prudent self-defense. The relationship between the U.S. and Israel was decidedly different at the Liberty incident than today.

From Dave Hunt, who was traveling through the area at that time:

..."Tragically, Israel suffered about 3,000 dead—which would be comparable to the U.S. losing 150,000. Except for a series of miracles from God, Israel would not have survived.

Where was her friend, the United States? Dozens of notices were sent to the Nixon White House by America’s National Security Administration (NSA) that an Arab Pearl Harbor was about to be launched against Israel. Nixon sat on them. Kissinger hid at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York the day of the attack and waited another three days before convening the UN Security Council. Declining to rush desperately needed military supplies to Israel, the White House said it had to be careful not to upset the Arabs and cause an oil crisis.

Six years earlier, on June 8, 1967, the fourth morning of the “Six-day War,” the USS Liberty, an electronics eavesdropping vessel, arrived off the Sinai coast and began to suck in every Israeli military communication, relaying it all to the British Secret Service’s giant computer installation on Cyprus. From there, complete maps of every Israeli military move were transmitted in advance to the Arab armed forces. With that help, the Arabs might have been able to use their overwhelming numerical superiority to turn the tide of the war. Israel had no choice except to sink the Liberty. Of course the media screamed about this “cold-blooded attack.” No one believed Israel’s public excuse that the Liberty had been mistaken for a hostile Egyptian ship—and neither the U.S. nor Israel has publicly told the truth. [Source]

Our relationship with Israel is just as fickle today, public statements of current and past Administrations notwithstanding. Their actions speak louder than their words. Note well our State Department.

1. “Mistakenly” is correct.. your word- happens in a 3 Front War.
2. Don’t know if true
3. “Flag was not waving”, again, your words.. makes it harder to see.
4. Please see the string Linked to. The Pilot first on scene to attack was looking for the Large White Cross on the Decks Of Israeli Military ships ONLY.
He didn’t see it but did note it was a Military ship— thought to be Egyptian with smoke and it coming from the al-arish area.
5. That’s their problem is it?
They HAD blown Radio Communications NOT to be anywhere near that area and neither the USA or Israel thought they were (unless this was all part of a Coverup of US spying by Liberty)
6. See #4
7. Yes.. again YOUR words— Liberty signal men incompetent.
8. Torpedo boats covered quite well in my link.
Please read it.

Most responding are just too lazy and I keep having to repeat the same thing over and over. Ridiculous. One gets shut up... another pops up with the identical red herring.
I will no longer answer questions covered in the linked string above- that does include some of YOURS.

And Baffled as to some of your points as at least 3 tend to Contradict the point you’re trying to make.

Please also see the First Pilot on scenes discussion with Jpost in the Linked string. PLEASE!
It covers some of your points.

F**king ridiculous- I’m not a damn machine for 10,000 people who are too lazy to read what I already posted.

I”ve read your post on the matter abu afak, does that mean that they should be taken over my own look into the matter?

That would be “no”, and for you to expect them to be is a bit astounding to me, you may value your own views/research highly, and good for you.

And you went through the list that I made, then added your won comments, then expect that to be taken as the final word on the matter, it isn’t it’s not, that is one heck of a long string of “mistakes”, to long actually.

To put it in simpler terms, Does the IAF make it a practice to attack ships that they cannot identify, and if so how often did they do that?

Does the Israeli Navy follow that same practice, and if so why would they do that?

“The IAF pilots were surprised that there was no fire coming from the ship towards them”

Hmm..a clue perhaps?

This subject is pointless, you will believe whatever you will, and so will I, it happened 40 yrs ago, let it die in the past.
