Sioux Nickname Could Be Dropped In 3 Years Unless Tribes OK It

GRAND FORKS, N.D. The state Board of Higher Education settled a lawsuit with the NCAA over the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname, giving the school three years to get tribal approval to keep it.
The board voted unanimously Friday to approve the settlement after a closed-door briefing from Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. If the school does not get approval from the Spirit Lake Sioux and Standing Rock Sioux tribes by Nov. 30, 2010, it will have to change to a new name and logo.
"The settlement confirms that the Sioux people and no one else should decide whether and how their name should be used,'' Bernard Franklin, an NCAA senior vice president, said in a statement.
[snip]
If the nickname is changed, UND would have to remove most of its Indian imagery on its Grand Forks campus. It could keep historical items and items embedded in the architecture, under the agreement.
Officials have estimated UND's Ralph Engelstad Arena has at least 3,000 Fighting Sioux logos, including a 10-foot sketch of an Indian head embedded in the granite floor.

Well, if the Sioux themselves dislike the school's tribute to their
fighting spirit...
I'd be tempted to rename the team "The Aboriginal Losers" for a
season or two.
Just to stick a stick in the eye of the political-correctness weinies.

My post;
‘So theyll change it to what? Disgrunteled Sioux? Conquered Sioux? Casino Sioux?’
Your post;
‘For a law school it could be: Sioux me, Sioux you.’
Couple of times per week, I see something and think ‘Damn, I wish I had wrote that one’.
This is one of those times.

How about The Fighting Sue? Their logo could be Johnny Cash, or a man chasing an ambulance.

As a person of Irish extraction, I will not rest until Notre Dame shows me the same respect as they have to show the Sioux. Fighting Irish indeed, why we get along famously with everybody . . . and don’t give me any lip about it or I’ll come over there and kick your butt.

What you've said there pretty much applies to every aboriginal tribe in North America. Few (if any) of them ever named themselves, but named other distinct tribes based on easily-discernible characteristics.
The Nez Perce, for example, means "pierced nose." There would have been no need for this group to come up with a name like this to describe themselves based on a self-adopted characteristic of the tribe.

Not to be taken as a threat, but the Lakota reservations in ND are very poor places that count on handouts from the state government. (As elsewhere little of the gaming money makes it to the average tribe member) If this doesn’t fly it will be much harder for these funds to continue.

They could use the Sioux City Airport as a mascot.

Why not demand that the name of the university be changed? After all, isn’t Dakota another name for Sioux?
To: adgirl
I love that little Irish leprechaun in the wwe.
To: wallcrawlr
Sioux is not their real name anyway. It’s Lakota, Dakota, or Nakota. All three are used. If they don’t get satisfaction do you think they should sioux?

The NCAA should begin to threaten the city where they have headquarters, Indianapolis. There is no reasonable excuse why the city is still known by that name. In fact, just about two blocks from the NCAA Hall of Champions is Victory Field, the home of the Minor League baseball Indianapolis Indians.
Start cleaning up your own back yard NCAA.
