After divorcing his “long time wife” (who also happened to be his high school teacher), Newt married Marianne a long time D.C. government insider, whom he dumped after he left office (really in shame as no one supported him.)
Actually, I was in Newt’s district at that time. He won the election that year handily, probably with 75-76% of the vote, if I remember correctly. A VERY short time after that, maybe even a matter of a couple of weeks, he resigned, and soon after came the announcement that he was divorcing his wife and marrying Calista Bisek. You can’t tell me that this all happened overnight, it had to be brewing for awhile. And right around that time, Larry Flynt was making noises about having “the goods” on prominent Republicans. Sure, he’s constantly making that claim, but I had to wonder if Newt resigned because he knew he was about to be outed by Flynt.
I was disappointed and angry with Newt at the time, because I really was a supporter of his and I had voted for him. As for what to think about him now, I do believe he’s brilliant and he’s full of great ideas. But always in the back of my mind, I have to think that the way you treat the person who is supposed to be the most important person in your life will carry over to the way you treat other people. It does affect my ability to trust him.
I did not know old newt married his high school teacher..that is interesting...I would not trust him either.. he is a skirt chaser as well and he could of in my mind done more to get clitons removal from office with his pull in the senate, except he was doing basically the same thing..
