Actually, I was in Newt’s district at that time. He won the election that year handily, probably with 75-76% of the vote, if I remember correctly. A VERY short time after that, maybe even a matter of a couple of weeks, he resigned, and soon after came the announcement that he was divorcing his wife and marrying Calista Bisek. You can’t tell me that this all happened overnight, it had to be brewing for awhile. And right around that time, Larry Flynt was making noises about having “the goods” on prominent Republicans. Sure, he’s constantly making that claim, but I had to wonder if Newt resigned because he knew he was about to be outed by Flynt.

I was disappointed and angry with Newt at the time, because I really was a supporter of his and I had voted for him. As for what to think about him now, I do believe he’s brilliant and he’s full of great ideas. But always in the back of my mind, I have to think that the way you treat the person who is supposed to be the most important person in your life will carry over to the way you treat other people. It does affect my ability to trust him.

I, too was a big supporter of Newt, though not a resident of GA but did donate to his "GOPAC" and attended some of their functions.

I even used to receive tapes from GOPAC on helping identify potential conservative candidates and help them to win elections.

I was very disappointed in what I thought strange behavior regarding Clinton and Monica, etc.

You are correct, right after being reelected, he stepped down and it was announced that the would be divorcing Marianne and marrying Calista, an "aide."

Whether his marriage to Marianne was for purely political reasons or not, he did leave wife #1 to marry her.

Same shades of Rudy, if a guy is that dishonest to two wives, after praying in front of "God and these witnesses....." then rarely can he be trusted with something so precious as our government.

Newt was reckless and thinking of no one except himself. In many respects he is like Bill Clinton.

This could help answer the question about his marriages; it’s different from what most of his distractors say, but at least it’s factual:
