Mrs. Bush's People Lied (Laura Bush dons Muslim headscarf)
Debbie Schlussel ^ | 10/25/2007 | Debbie Schlussel

When I first wrote about First Lady Laura Bush's latest Breast Cancer Awareness Tour of the Extremist Islamic World (redundant), I noted that Mrs. Bush's PR team told the press that she would not, under any circumstances, don an Islamic headscarf or anything of the sort:

"They do not expect nor encourage it," of Western visitors at official meetings, said Bush's spokeswoman, Sally McDonough. "As members of the official traveling party, we will not need to wear any head scarves or abayas at any point."

I didn't buy it. And, as usual, my instincts were correct. This is Sheikha Laura, yesterday, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (thanks to reader "greatcometof1577").

It’s Debbie S. she’s got a lot of free time to whine about stuff like this.

No, she’s not. Another smart woman who choses sensationalism over substance far too often.

But that’s OK, because it’s a Catholic thing.

“They accomplished their goal: the wife of the President of the United States in a Muslim headscarf. “

Does the sky fall now?

You can spin it and all you want, including ad hominem attacks, but submission is exactly what she did.

In your opinion.

Our enemies will certainly see it that way.

They see what they want to see.

Why? The headscarf is not a terrorist weapon, it’s an article of clothing used by a religion.

This reminds me of all the “no, we are only against ILLEGAL immigrants, we LIKE legal immigrants”, followed by the “what I hate most about illegals is the salsa music and how many cars they park in their yards, and how they speak spanish”.

Thus indicating that the problem is not “illegal” but “hispanic”.

Here apparently it’s not “terrorist” but “muslim”. Like nobody should be allowed to practice any form of the Muslim faith, and our country should officially ridicule the Muslim faith.

We are not at war with Islam, just as the British Government was not at war with Christianity in Ireland.

I just saw it, it looked like the ladies were having a nice time. Laura looked touched that the gift was given her, so she chose to be a goodwill ambassador.

Seems like the job of the First Lady. Doesn’t mean shes turning Muslim.

Geesh

Sure, the faith is unfair to women. But for those women, they are acting out in deference to their faith, just as some christian women wear hats to church because THEY believe that is what God requires of them, and just as others say what seem like meaningless chants again and again because THEY believe that is what God requires for them to be forgiven of their sins.

It all might seem bizarre or even harmful to those who practice it, but we shouldn’t mock those who do practice it. We can have our own faith, and teach them their faith is wrong, without then making fun of them.

I admit that it isn’t easy being in the public eye, but part of the price of leadership is being subject to—and learning from—the rebuke of the like-minded. The simple fact is that the Saudis are merciless 13th century thugs made rich off of our technology for drilling their oil. The Bush Family—and the West in general—needs to to spend more time instructing them and less time coddling them. The veil represents a brutal, genital-mutilating, Christian-bashing tradition and, frankly, Laura should have known that.

Hey, I don’t mind what they choose to wear on their heads or over their faces.

Just like I don’t mind those of the Jewish faith wearing coffee filters as headgear. Besides, you never know when you might want a cup of coffee but have run out of filters....kosher coffee, anyone?

(I’m an equal opportunity mocker...all in a good natured sort a way)

Well, Jesus said render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. The context was that it was OK to pay taxes to an evil oppressive government.

So I have to think it’s OK to put a headscarf on. After all, the Bible doesn’t prohibit headscarfs. If we were talking about doing something that was prohibited in her own faith, that would be a different matter.

In fact, SHE DID NOTHING to “not offend muslims for their beliefs”. She didn’t wear a headscarf as a muslim woman would do. She is being attacked here for PUTTING ON A GIFT.

And since that gift was not evil (like a swastika), did not violate another religion’s belief system, and was not a symbol of an evil form of government (hammer and sickle), the complaints here are without merit.

There are a lot of people here who are arguing that any deference or acknowledgment of the Muslim faith is evil and must be condemned. But our government should NOT be in the habit of condemning religions, even wrong ones.

We should condemn the BAD ACTS Of individuals and groups, and we shouldn’t back down because they are of a particular religion, but we should not equate the religion with the bad acts, even if as many argue those bad acts are justified by the religion.

After all, most religions have been used to justify bad acts. And even religions that started solely to justify bad acts may now have had divergences from their original intent.

Some of the women who dress like actually WANT to dress that way. Should they be forced to dress like us?

While I believe that most Muslims are not radicals, there are many Muslims that hate non-Muslims. Surely when a woman is in America she realizes this and realizes that she is antagonizing us. But then again, maybe I’m the only one that feels this way. Kind of like I have felt for the last 50 years relying on the MSM.

She didn’t “wear a headscarf”, she put one on as a gift for a picture. She then took it off, showing that she wasn’t wearing it as a submission to the customs to be covered at all times.

Nancy Pelosi wore head coverings when meeting with the leadership. That was a “submission” to their societal norms, and she was as an elected official a “representative” of our country.

Laura Bush is not an elected official, but when she met with the leaders she was not wearing a covering.

When we attack meaningless things like putting a gift on, we devalue the meaningfulness of real violations like Pelosi covering up for official meetings with the leaders.

As an additional point, if I am invited to a home and they ask me to remove my shoes, I do, because my religion finds nothing offensive about not wearing shoes (although my host may find something offensive in ME not wearing shoes :-)

I actually don’t wear shoes in my own house either, but we don’t have a rule about it.

I don’t see anything wrong with putting on a gift to show thanks and respect. If Laura came to Free Republic I would expect her to put on the tinfoil hat we gave her.

So you don’t think “Christian” is a real religion?

Actually, they are all (except Atheism) real religions. Whether they are CORRECT is another question entirely. But they all meet the definition of religion.
