Mrs. Bush's People Lied (Laura Bush dons Muslim headscarf)
Debbie Schlussel ^ | 10/25/2007 | Debbie Schlussel

When I first wrote about First Lady Laura Bush's latest Breast Cancer Awareness Tour of the Extremist Islamic World (redundant), I noted that Mrs. Bush's PR team told the press that she would not, under any circumstances, don an Islamic headscarf or anything of the sort:

"They do not expect nor encourage it," of Western visitors at official meetings, said Bush's spokeswoman, Sally McDonough. "As members of the official traveling party, we will not need to wear any head scarves or abayas at any point."

I didn't buy it. And, as usual, my instincts were correct. This is Sheikha Laura, yesterday, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (thanks to reader "greatcometof1577").

“Oh no, she graciously accepted a gift and participated in something that is part of their religion/culture. What’s the world coming to? (/sarc)”

She and Bush also host a Ramadan feast in the WH every year for our “moderate” muslims. I say it is totally disgusting.

I can’t imagine that Jesus would alter His behaviors and practices so as not to offend muslims for their beliefs.

And I don’t believe that He would have Christians do the same.

There is a line where you don’t go out and intentionally offend others. But these muslims offend Christians at every turn by their demands....when visiting THIS country.

“...if you read the article with the real quote from Mrs. Bush’s PR rep, it doesn’t say that she WON’T wear a headscarf or abaya, it says she won’t NEED to.”

Clintonian parsing if I’ve ever seen it.

I think you probably gave a dishonest answer. You know the host would have been highly offended. Why should any Christian bow down to a pagan religion by putting a symbol of oppression on their heads?.

Of course I know the difference and I also know the difference between a woman forced to wear a veil and an American Lady being given a gift and having the grace to not make the giver feel shamed.

It was obvious, she tried it on, everyone smiled and went her way. The warmth was evident in the photo.

And I remind you that some Muslim women embrace the veil and do not see it as involuntary.

I think there IS a difference between agreeing to a directive to wear a headscarf during official meetings and/or public appearances, and freely choosing to wear a headscarf while in the private home of a family which holds religious beliefs requiring this.

You can be sure I wouldn’t let any Muslim woman wearing one of the face-covering get-ups into my home, especially if I had impressionable young daughters there. I don’t find the head coverings offensive (looks no different than traditional Catholic nuns’ garb) but I do find the face-coverings offensive and extremely harmful.

"so you’re comparing catholics with islam, a religion that believes that all Jews and Christians must either convert, die or accept dhimmitude"

No! I am comparing you and other forum posters that try to make a link between Laura Bush, on a cancer awareness trip, to friendly Muslim women as being somehow unpatriotic, anti-Christian or anti-Jew.

Give me a break. Her people (not her) said that Mrs Bush would not do something in the future. Then Mrs Bush, who can and probably does, acted on her own and wore the headscarf.

Her people were wrong, but its only a lie if they are still saying she did not wear it, which would be rather stupid on their part considering the pictures.

Even Apostle Paul tells one to eat without inquiry! Didn't anyone teach you that?

Paul also tells us not to associate or eat with anyone claiming to be a believer (under GWB's weird universalism, he apparently sees Muslims as believers in the same God he worships) with anyone who is an extortioner. Sounds like the Saudis to me.

She could have accepted the gift without pandering to those jackals. It sent the wrong signal.

Actually, the answer was not dishonest. A gracious person such as the current First Lady would not deliberately do something to offend her guests or hosts. Just as she would not deliberately do something to demean herself.

In this case, I honestly believe she was simply being gracious, and I am sure she quickly removed the scarf after the appropriate moment had passed.

I’ll be you even have enough politeness and decorum to accept a gift, hold it up, try it on, smile, and even say thank you without expecting a bunch of second guessing morons to make idiotic accusations against you.

Oh, sure. That’s logical. It would be a true insult if she did that and a President’s wife can’t afford to insult the people in the country she’s visiting. cheez.

Exactly. She’s not going to turn into a muzzie because she puts a scarf on. Anything the Bush family does is wrong, wrong, wrong even on FR. Notice that lately?

I cant see how this about Laura is such a big deal. I suppose she is doing the job as a First Lady. She could hardly throw their gift back at them. Imagine the fluffup if she did that!

All those women looked like they were having a good time.

I see all od this angst as people sweating the small stuff.

LOL

re: We are supposedly engaged in a “war on terror”. This is a misnomer - it is actually a war against Muslim extremism. This symbolic gesture, by the wife of our president, is an act of submission. It was a very stupid act, period)))

Dittoes. They gave the scarf to her to get this phot-op--Laura Bush Submits to Sharia...whe should have put it around her neck like a shawl, and said, isn't the fabric pretty--I'll save it for the next funeral I have to go to...
