Feds: Fake-ID ring killed to stay ahead Mexico says it has captured leader; his stepdaughter cheers

The violent and sometimes improbable saga of a fake ID ring that stretched from Little Village to Mexico City reached a climax Wednesday, when federal authorities announced that they had captured the leader in Mexico and charged him with murder and racketeering.

U.S. law enforcement officials in Chicago said Mexican authorities caught up Friday with Manuel Leija-Sanchez, 40, saying he was the leader of a Little Village-based operation since at least 1993. Officials estimate the ring made as much as $3 million a year over that period.

The ring made headlines in April, when, according to authorities, the slaying of an alleged competitor led armed federal agents to storm the operation in a daylight raid, triggering a street protest over the agents' tactics.

Long part of the daily bustle at a 26th Street outdoor mall, the ring was the Chicago franchise of a larger network of fake ID operations across the U.S., run by the Castorena-Ibarra crime family in Mexico, federal immigration officials say....

Fake-ID ring killed to stay ahead

Why kill? All you have to do is move here to CT & you can get a New Haven issued ID card for free. Then, cross the border into NY & get your drivers license.

Those rings in Queens were suppose to be connected to NJ and Virginia too. I can’t remember where I saw that now though.

Wonder where on this ‘tree’ of fake ID gangs the DNC’s “Fifty State Plan” fits?

Maybe Spitzer’s new driver’s license for illegals is to circumvent the break up of the fake ID rings.

Yes, they need the IDs to apply for matriculas. And with that, they can vote.

Is there anyone ready to take over? (/sarcasm)

Great News. I do appreciate all the efforts of those who played a role in getting the leaders etc., caught.

The ring made headlines in April, when, according to authorities, the slaying of an alleged competitor led armed federal agents to storm the operation in a daylight raid, triggering a street protest over the agents' tactics.

Now where could they have gotten the idea of killing someone over phony ID documents for illegal alien criminals and terrorists....

February 10, 2002, Memphis: Driver’s License Examiner Dies in Suspicious Circumstances

Katherine Smith is killed one day before her scheduled appearance in court on charges she helped five Islamic men get illegal drivers licenses. According to witnesses, she veered into a utility pole when a fire erupted in her car. She was burned beyond recognition. The FBI later determines that gasoline was poured on her clothing before she died in the fire and find that arson was the cause of death. [Associated Press, 2/15/2002]

A suicide note was found, but prosecutors say they are looking for murder suspects. One of the five men, Sakhera Hammad, was found with a pass in his wallet giving access to the restricted areas of the WTC, dated September 5, 2001. Hammad claims he was a plumber and worked on the WTC’s sprinkler system that day, but the company with exclusive rights to all WTC plumbing work has never heard of him. Smith was being investigated by the FBI; the five later plead guilty to charges of fraud. [Go Memphis, 2/12/2002; Associated Press, 2/13/2002; Reuters, 2/15/2002; Commercial Appeal (Memphis), 2/21/2002]

One of the five, Khaled Odtllah, drove from New York City to Memphis on 9/11. Tennessee is one of only four US states that doesn’t require a Social Security card to get a driver’s license. A prosecutor accuses each of the five men of attempting to acquire a “completely false and untraceable identity.” [Associated Press, 2/12/2002; Associated Press, 2/15/2002]

One month later, the coroner who examines her body is targeted by a bomb, which is defused. Then in June the coroner is attacked, bound with barbed wire, and left with a bomb tied to his body, but he survives. [Commercial Appeal (Memphis), 3/14/2002]

America's vigilant FReepers knew about it.

And about how Kathrine Smith was set free on bond

And how one of those who got his license from Smith had a WTC repair Pass [and NY police Union membership cards] in his possession.

[Good thing they don't have a side view on TN Driver's License cards. Why, somebody might have recognized him!]

Illegal alien crimes are mostly non violent misdemeanors such as driving without a drivers license and loitering on public streets.

Are you trying to scare people into believing that our elected officials are not concerned with illegal alien crimes and ineffective in protecting American borders?

We all believe that they do care and they should be reelected. /s
