California Rep. Duncan Hunter is AWOL from Capitol Hill today, but for good reason.
Instead of casting votes, the Republican presidential hopeful is in his home state trying to help his constituents with the wildfires that are raging in their district. But he's not sleeping at home. Hunter's neighborhood has been evacuated.
"We lost ours in the last fire," said Hunter today, referring to a 2003 blaze that burned 2,000 homes around San Diego, including Hunter's.

The man is there doing all he can do to help his constituents, but the writer of the article just couldn't resist getting the dig in at the end.
They Dread the Duncan!

I appreciated Hunter’s attitude and knowledge on local television today. It’s reassuring when a politician knows what he is talking about.

Yes, as compared with Babs Boxer who couldn’t find a clue. Perhaps she was too busy looking for a nexus to “Bush’s Illegal and Immoral War”. She got most of the face time, had to eat some crow, but assured her constituents she would be back in 10 days. Stark contrast, and the world was watching. :)

I have a question for someone from CA regarding one of the many ‘Propositions’ you have ... as I recall, property owners in CA are protected from huge annual property tax assessments by a grandfather clause that states that property value can only be established during change of ownership, major remodeling, etc. Do I have that correct? If so, if your home has burned to the ground, are you now subject to a new assessment when you rebuild? If so, that could be additional bad news for many.

A crying shame Duncan doesn’t have the funds, nor the media attention that the “1st tier” candidates are receiving. The man comes across as the most qualified and knowledgeable candidate in the whole field.

When your town is burning around you it sure is nice to turn on the TV and hear from a government official what they are going to do about it. Duncan knew how many aircraft were available and where they were, he knew the names of the individual aircraft, and he talked about what strings he was pulling to get it done. That’s what I want to hear...solutions, not more whining about the problem. If San Diego needed school buses (*ahem*), I’m sure he would have known how many were available.

Hunter does always seem well-informed. President Bush just landed in Air Force One at Miramar Marine Air Base in San Diego.... will be looking for him to meet up with Rep. Hunter along the way today.

Barbi got her digs in yesterday at her visit to the Q, when she said she wrote a letter to the Army General concerned about the lack of National guards we had here in the US because of the iraqi war, we could not support a disaster, and she said the reply she got back was not encouraging, he agreed with her...what a load of crap, plus she was amaazed that people not the government except for the mayor oepning up the stadium had taken care of the problem...Walmart was amazing with their generosity... truck loads of stuff at the stadium.. on another note.. I did not see any thing from the retail clerks union there..

Duncan Hunter is with President Bush on his tour of the fire devastated area. They are now meeting with firefighters in the San Diego area.
To: La Enchiladita
Thanks for the update. I hope the fire is under control there now.

Various fires under various percentages of control, from 0% to 50%.
However, weather conditions are improving: winds have died down, air temps are slowly dropping, perhaps more moisture in the air.
Arson investigations ongoing.
