More than a dozen Miami University students will take part in national protest this week.
OXFORD A group of Miami University students will strap on empty holsters today to oppose gun-control laws.
The students are joining a national protest this week of students who say laws banning licensed concealed carried weapons on campuses should be repealed.
Stephen Feltoon, a senior psychology student at Miami, said he expects about 15 Miami students to join more than 500 from a hundred colleges nationwide.
"We're not expecting overnight change," Feltoon said. "We want students to come up and ask 'Hey, what's with the holster?'"
In the wake of last spring's Virginia Tech shooting that left 33 dead, some have argued that another student with a gun could have stopped the shooter before he killed so many.
"We strongly believe that, when used legally, firearms can save lives," Feltoon said.
The students notified the university, who in turn notified the student body not to be alarmed. Miami spokeswoman Claire Wagner said the university recognized the act as free speech and instructed the students to keep the holsters in plain sight.
"If it's partly under a shirt, it does nobody any good," she said.
The University of Cincinnati took the same approach, said student Michael Flitcraft, who organized the same protest at UC.
"It's just a student wearing an empty leather or nylon pouch," he said.
Flitcraft said organizers took to the Internet especially through the social networking site Facebook to spread word of the demonstration.
Organizers said students plan to carry holsters through Friday.

Fill the holsters and really protest
If this were Wisconsin, they’d all be expelled.
You just know that the leftists will simply outlaw empty holsters. Leftists have no tolerance for dissent — and NO sense of humor.
Ping!
If they point their index fingers and hold their thumbs up to make their hands into the shape of a gun, will they all be arrested?
I'll agree with the intolerance, but some of the things they say at DU are absolutely hilarious.......and scary......
Here’s hoping it does some good. Cheers.
Had mine on today at UCONN. No one bothered me though - must have been the shirt and tie I’m wearing, LOL. (yeah, that’s it...)
Only if the put the hand in the holster first and make a quick draw. “It’s the law!” Heh heh heh...
This is one protest I like.
Which campus at UCONN?
Maybe that's why the police use them. /sarc off
The most outspoken liberal UCONN campus - Storrs! :)
Lol
Too bad 15 doesn’t make much impact on a huge campus.
We laugh when liberal causes barely muster many participants but get the media. People who don’t read/watch the media won’t know anything about this.
There is hope left for the USA!
I’m a very short walk from the Stamford campus.
Actually, that’s an “L”
This ‘teasip’ is referring to the thumb and finger being in the shape of an ‘L’, which is then applied to the forehead as a symbol for ‘loser’. This is a common myth in the liberal bastion that is Austin, where gun ownership is fiercely rejected. And feared.
