Louisiana elects first nonwhite governor since Reconstruction

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal became the nation's youngest governor and the first nonwhite to hold post in Louisiana since Reconstruction when he carried more than half the vote to defeat 11 opponents.

Jindal, the Republican 36-year-old son of Indian immigrants, had 53 percent with 625,036 votes with about 92 percent of the vote tallied. It was more than enough to win Saturday's election outright and avoid a November 17 runoff.

"My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened. They found the American Dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana," he said to cheers and applause at his victory party.

....

When he takes office in January, Jindal will become the nation's youngest governor in office. He pledged to fight corruption and rid the state of those "feeding at the public trough," revisiting a campaign theme.

"They can either go quietly or they can go loudly, but either way, they will go," he said, adding that he would call the Legislature into special session to address ethics reform.

Jindal is an Indo-European. He is not African and is not “Black.”

FWIW:

“Huma Naeem is a quite attractive young lady! No wonder Bobby won with supporters like her”

I agree. Judging by her T shirt she is also an Alfred E. Newman fan! /s

No — that is supposed to be the iconic “Che” picture morphed into Bobby’s face — he is a great leader and candidate, but no beauty — that’s why the picture looks double doofy. Also, note the pun on “LA (Louisiana) revolucion”

Good on him, especially considering how he got done in his previous campaign.

Maybe he can kick some butt, take some names, and get things straightened out down there!

CNN’s headline annoyed me. I suppose they couldn’t say Indian-American because they thought it would be confusing, but they could have just said that a Republican got elected. That’s what counts.

Yes, and Arabs are classified as “white”, much to the dismay of some of my former neighbors in Brooklyn.

The previous "non-white" gov.

(Like Obama, half "white" (his father)) As you can see, he looks a whole lot more "Euro-Caucasian" than Jindal. He was a Republican too, BTW.

Gov. Pinchback later won election to the US House and Senate, but both times, the 'Rats were successful in preventing him from taking his seat.

I wish my kid grows up like him.. there are lots of kids who start off as big achievers (whiz kids) but they tend to fade away by their late 20s or 30s. I think that could be because they dont have enough spiritual (religious) bent of mind to temper their talent and ambition and guide them in life.

Thats what makes Jindal so special, he was probably a child prodigy from the beginning but he tamed his ambition with spiritualism, so that he can have a lot of stamina in later years of life.

For sure. If he had a little more experience under his belt, he'd be a solid contender for the top job.

Hi Puroresu,

I’m big time into Japanese movies. Have seen almost all the movies you mentioned there.

Nice to see that you like Kenzo Mizoguchi’s “Sansho, the bailiff”.. not ashamed to admit that it was the only movie that made me cry.. true masterpiece of classic old cinema.. everyone usually appreciates Kurosawa and his big budget movies with epic themes, but rarely does Mizoguchi get his due credit.

Further more, you said you like Thai movies, but I dont find you mentioning ONG BAK:MUAY THAI WARRIOR.. Tony Jaa is gonna kick Jet Li’s ass in any real time fight.. his speed and reflexes are stunning.

If mention that you like OLD BOY, which is fairly violent, but if you really like those kind of movies, you should also check out: BATTLE ROYALE, DEAD OR ALIVE TRILOGY.. first class yakuza flicks.

Modern Alt Japanese movies make Quentin Tarantinos and Robert Rodriguezes look like kindergarten kids.. try checking out some more movies of TAKASHI MIIKE, especially the cult hit AUDITION (which is one of the creepiest movies ever made) and ICHI, the KILLER (which is the “sickest” movie ever made.. literally.. no hip hop slang intended).

Oh yeah! Ong Bak is something else!

Takashi Miike is one weird director! He's done the freak-out horror stuff like Audition, with the totally psycho chick, but he can also do really touching films like The Bird People In China, and black comedies like Happiness of the Katakuris. A really versatile director!

The government classified race in 2000 by listing five races and telling people to "pick all that apply". They listed:

White
Black
American Indian and Alaska Native
Asian
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander

Then on a separate question, they asked "Are you hispanic?"

If it was up to me, if they were doing a survey on race in America, I'd phrase it more like this:

RACIAL BACKGROUND

Select which ethnic group the MAJORITY of your ancestry is from. Check only ONE box.

CAUCASIAN (mostly Western & Eastern European ancestry: German, Irish, Polish, Italian, etc.)
AFRICAN (mostly central and sub-sarhareen Africa ancestry) South Africa, Guana, Kenya, etc.
ORIENTAL or PACIFIC ISLANDER (mostly asian/far east ancestry Hawaiian, Japan, Korea, China, Cambodia, etc.
EAST INDIAN (mostly India subcontinent or Pakistani ancestry) India, Pakistan
ARABIC (mostly Mideastern & Northern African background) Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese, etc.)
AMERICAN INDIAN or ALASKAN NATIVE (Indigious to the Americas) Cree, Blackfoot, Sioux, Inuit, etc.
MESTIZO (mixed European Spaniard & Indigenous Indian ancestry) Mexican, Columbian, Brazilian, etc.
MIXED ( equal parts multiple ancestry. List all races that apply _________ _____________ __________ __________ )

"... most of the current occupants of India are described as Dravidian."

INDIA

Ethnic groups:

Indo-Aryan 72%, Dravidian 25%, Mongoloid and other 3% (2000)

‘Jindal’ is a Hindu surname. A Muslim in India wouldn’t have ‘Jindal’ as a surname (they would, instead, have an Arab surname). Besides, it is documented in many places that Bobby Jindal converted to Christianity as a teenager. His parents are still Hindu, and not Muslim.
