Obama: No Hand on Heart for Pledge Either -- Will MSM Notice?
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Turns out that not wearing a flag lapel pin isn't the only way Barack Obama chooses to show that he's a different kind of Democrat.

Have a look at the photo from the October 1, 2007 edition of "Time." It shows Obama, Hillary and Bill Richardson at the Steak Fry of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) on September 17 in Indianola, IA, apparently reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Richardson and Clinton have their hands on their heart. But not Obama. Does he perhaps believe that, like wearing the flag pin, the hand on the heart isn't "true patriotism"?

"Time" ran the photo without comment. I haven't seen coverage of this anywhere else in the MSM. Perhaps some enterprising reporter can ask the Illinois senator about his decision to spurn this American tradition.

Meanwhile, does Obama have some third act or omission planned to demonstrate that he's not falling for those corny, old-fashioned displays of patriotism?

H/t reader J.S.

Using Knock Out doesn’t take very much time. If you were to do this without a filter it would take much longer.

The sky is there because there was no hay bale in that position. That position is behind the flag when looking straight at the stage, hence no need for hay bales back there. I don’t know what the red color in the hay is, but it isn’t from the flag. Why would there be red spots in the hay bales behind Obama’s chair? That isn’t anywhere near the flag.

Agreed about the photoshopping. Look at the way the blue field on the flag is indented by OHO’s arm, the bottom of the flag chopped off, the strange perspective of the flag compared to the perspective of the chairs and women. It’s a very poorly done collage.

We don’t know the context of the photo — whether Obama raised his hand to his left chest a second later, etc. And I’m more interested in his policy positions than his choice of accessories.

I’m not that eager to defend Barack. I won’t vote for him. But if this kind of silly s—t is going to set the tone for the campaign this early, that’s a blade that swings both ways. We’re dealing with too many real dangers to obsess over a hand gesture or a lapel pin.

Ok, look at the video on YouTube at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqRL9O5joiI

This was from the same event as the photo in question. You can clearly see the big flag behind Obama as he talks at about the 38 second mark. It is supported by a wooden stand. It isn't photoshopped.

Sorry folks, this is obviously photoshopped

You may be on to something. I located the vanishing point to examine the size relationships. The green areas were used to find the height of chairs. The rear chair is only 1/2 the scale of the front chair.

I moved the two women slightly forward on the stage to put their feet in line with Obama's. Obama, sized proportionately, does seem unusually large in relation to Hillary. Any thoughts?

Educated in a mandrassa...he’s a Moslem in black clothing. Watch out. He’d surrender on January 21, 2009, if elected, to his Moslem brothers in arms.

I’m only catching up on his not wearing a flag pin. I gather he started wearing it after 9/11, then stopped. If so, I can cut him some slack. For most people, a flag pin is not a permanent part of their attire.

For a politician to fail to put their hand over their heart during the national anthem is a real faux pas. But I can see some ordinary person making that error, especially if they are in front, as in the picture, and do not see the example set by others. I say keep an eye on the guy. If he keeps it up, then he is either deaf to American conventions, or he is dissing America.

I recall Gore reversed the American motto. He was either not-so-bright, or he was signaling his acceptance of multiculturalism and rejection of America as we have known it.

It’s only worth somebody’s time when it’s a “hypocritical” Republican. So you’re half right I guess.

That's going to depend on the foreshortened angle and the focal length of the photographer's lens.

Obama seems "unusually large" because he's closest to the lens.

I don’t know much about photoshop, but I do know that sometimes the perspective in pictures taken by my digital camera is fairly skewed.

Pretty late to the party, but my wife just emailed me the photo. I used a divider to measure how tall Obama and Hillary are compared to the height to the seat of the chair.

Obama = ~4.25 chairs x ~ 17.3” = 73.5” tall (Height of Obama from a google search.)

Hillary = ~ 3.8 chais x 17.3” = 65.7” tall. (Hillary’s bio says she is 66” tall).

So, I think the height issue is mute. (I backed into the 17.3” height of the seat of the chair based on Obama’s bio, but it seems reasonable for a folding chair, but I don’t have one around the house.

The blue gap (with the bars) between Obama and the flag is probably something to do with the construction.

The red in the hay bales seems to form lines and is probably red baling twine and the blotches are where they were tied.

Good work. I think this makes very good sense.

The only possible flaw in your observations is giving Hillary credit for telling the truth about her height in her bio. : )

LOL! Another thread has Obama saying this is just dumb. It wasn’t the pledge - it was the National Anthem and you don’t put your hand over your heart for the Anthem. (One of his staffers should have done a quick google search as the flag code says you should! Idiots! Plus the airplane/wrong airport thing!)
