The Roll Call newspaper in Washington reported on its website this evening that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois intends to resign his House seat later this year.
The subscription-only site said Hastert, who had already announced he would not seek reelection in 2008, was calling friends and associates today and telling them of his decision. His early departure would create the need for a special election in his exurban Chicago district, possibly on Illinois' Feb. 5 presidential primary day.
The 65-year-old former high school teacher and wrestling coach, first elected to the U.S. House in 1986 after six years in the Illinois house, has easily won reelection in the state's 14th District in recent years...

Yep, the court was also wrong.
I only included Paul as a reference. I agree with the “throw the bums out” mentality regarding government spending but as a practical matter, I’d still rather start with the Dems.
We hold that the compelled disclosure of privileged material to the Executive during execution of the search warrant for Rayburn House Office Building Room 2113 violated the Speech or Debate Clause and that the Congressman is entitled to the return of documents that the court determines to be privileged under the Clause.
Great. The court was still wrong about this in my view.
As was Denny Hastert.
Democrats do have a lot more older members of Congress than Republicans. I think Democrats have 26 over 70 to Republicans’ 15 over 70 in Congress. Democrats have I think 84 to Republicans’ 52 in Congress between the ages of 60 and 69. Democrats should have more retiring from Congress than Republicans in the coming years. In the Senate though Republicans and Democrats I believe are even in the 60 to 69 demographic but Republicans have 15 over 70 to Democrats’ 10. A few more Republicans are likely to retire from the Senate than Democrats in the coming years. Both houses are graying more than in the past, with the average age of members creeping up. We could probably do without so many senile old farts. These Senators often run for new six year terms when they are already in their mid seventies or older. It’s getting so expensive to run campaigns these days there is a lot of pressure on these guys to stay in longer and longer so we can have incumbents in office that are tough to beat. We’ll probably see more and more dying in office or having to get out because they get Alzheimer's disease or other serious age related maladies.
Well what do you know, I agree with you! Throw them all out, starting with the Rats.
Okay.
That's how I'll always remember him.
Officers of the executive branch literally raided Capitol offices. I can't imagine any congressional leader from any party in any period in history who would let that stand.
That doesn't mean that members of Congress are immune, or even that congressional offices are off-limits; just that the congressional leadership should have been consulted and the Capitol police should have formally executed the warrant (with the Feds along for the ride).
Very.
It's no fun going from the majority party to the minority party, and there were a lot of Democrat retirements after the '94 election. If anything it's an indication that a lot of GOP members don't expect to return to the majority any time soon.
Hastert’s district has had a huge influx of illegal aliens. It is probable that a lot of them are also now illegal voters because of motor voter and hispanic organizing campaigns.
It is a process that is being seen in a lot of new areas.
Illegals in northern Virginia, actively recruited and registered by La Raza and LULAC and MeCHa made the difference in Webb’s 9000 vote victory over Allen.
Election fraud by illegals is one of American politics’ dirty little secrets, and Republican candidates can’t do much about it without being labelled as racists.
I never liked Hastert.
‘That’s how I’ll always remember him.’
Yep. Damn shame, given how long he served in office. I can’t help but think things would have been handled differently if DeLay had still been there at the time.
Phoney "Republicans" are bailing out daily, so they can be replaced by Socialists/Progressives/Democrats, and the '08 Congress ill have super-majorities in both Houses, and the Hildabeast will take the throne. This will complete passage of all necessary preparation for the appointment of 2 or 3 activist replacement Justices at the USSC, and all 3 branches of government then are at the control of the Socialist Elites, and the Constitution will be relegated to the ash heap of history in total.
Is this scary, or what????
does he have a wide stance also?
WIFE-O-BUCKHEAD
“And just how safe is Hasterts district?”
Safe for what? big government spenders like Hastert?
Wasn’t there something about him buying land cheap, selling high and then an exit ramp off a Fed highway was put in?
