PORTLAND, Me., Oct. 17 — The Portland school board on Wednesday approved a measure allowing middle-school students to gain access to prescription birth control medications without notifying parents.

The proposal, from the Portland Division of Public Health, calls for the independently operated health care center at King Middle School to provide a variety of services to students, including immunizations and physical checkups in addition to birth-control medications and counseling for sexually transmitted diseases, said Lisa Belanger, an administrator for Portland’s student health centers...

Thanks for the links.

Do you know if the parents of children at this school intend to pursue this issue, and if not, why not?

I can’t believe the school districts attorney would allow this to happen.
With the potential side effects of this DRUG , giving it to a child is just asking for a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the school district.

“Not every child is getting the guidance needed to keep them safe,” said Richard Veilleux, who said his child attends King Middle School. “This is about giving kids who are sexually active the tools that they need.”

This girlie man sperm donor needs to be taken to the woodshed and castrated so that he will NEVER produce any more children.

What he said: “Not every child is getting the guidance needed to keep them safe,” said Richard Veilleux, who said his child attends King Middle School. “This is about giving kids who are sexually active the tools that they need.”

What he meant: “I’m such a pathetic parent that I can’t guide my children’s behavior. This is about giving my kids access to free birth control so I don’t have to pay for it, and making me feel better about my abysmal parenting at the same time.”

Mr. Veilleux, you are a dolt. Birth control pills don’t keep anyone “safe.” Giving an immature girl a pack of pills and telling her to have at it protects her neither emotionally nor physically. But who cares about that as long as you feel good about yourself?

“We need parental permission for photographs to be taken, but it’s perfectly okay for invasive medical exams to be given and dangerous drugs to be administered without even notifying the parents? Bizarre.”

And what’s even more bizarre is that it has been established that the younger the girl is, the more harmful it is to pump her body full of hormones.
This is dangerous stuff.

While I have admired homeschoolers, I have never felt I was “up to the task” of doing it myself.
We are fortunate in our small rural district. The board, the administration, and much of the staff are comprised of reasonable people with traditional values. Most are practicing christians, and so far we have even gotten away with having real Christmas songs at the Christmas concert.
I cannot see something like this happening here, but if it did I would immediately pull my kids.

Probably with a name like that, it is the guy you know. And he is so wrong if he thinks it’s about “giving kids who are sexually active the tools they need.” As if they will turn away the kids who’ve never “done it” before? Wrong! I talked to a neighbor (woman psychiatrist) about her 17 y.o. son. He’d gone to homecoming, and his date joked about him having the condoms. Later his mom told him that if he was too embarrassed to buy them or couldn’t afford them, she would buy them for him. He said “Mom! I don’t want them!” Oh, I could have gone on and on, but this is a new acquaintence who knows I am a Christian, and she would have written any diatribe off as being “Christianese” and ignorant. I did manage to say that condoms do not prevent STDs, that the condoms given out “free” are not necessarily the finest quality, and also that not all kids WANT to have sex, regardless of their hormones. I’m so sick of people thinking it’s a GIVEN that kids will have sex. And to think this is Middle School, where peer pressure is enormous.

I bet there are a lot of teenage boys in Maine rejoicing today, and come to think of it, probably a lot of adult men too.

This is just one of the liberal sacraments: Teen sex, euthanasia and abortion.

I’m just curious, has there been a large number of pregnancies among Maine’s 11-13 year-olds in recent years?

The next story coming out of there would be middle school children "doing it" in the hallway or stairwells.

Will we be surprised?

Probably with a name like that, it is the guy you know ...yep, it's fairly uncommon, even for Maine.

I find it endlessly fascinating....parents who would go into vapors at the thought of their child with a loaded gun, have absolutely no problem with provding something roughly as dangerous...birth control and implied permission to use it.

IMHO, most kids have enough sense not to point a gun at someone and pull the trigger. However, promiscuous sex is "No Big Deal".....Until you catch something, get pregnant, or wind up in a situation that you surely don't need to be in.

I agree, in fact the next time this topic comes up with my neighbor, I will ask her if she tells her son not to: 1. Take drugs 2. Speed 3. Drink and drive 4. Cheat in school, and so on. If she can tell him not to do those things, and feel confident that he won’t, why can’t she tell him to “Save it”? And, again, this kid is 17. Middle schoolers? What those little kids are being set up for is outrageous. The emotional cost alone is enormous, and to think it is being condoned/encouraged by the school?!?!

Lady Vet has made an excellent point!

Another possible side effect: cystic mastitis. Very likely can cause painful precursors to breast cancer.

Not to mention, what if one of the girls given pills by the school gets pregnant anyway? It happens. She and/or her parents could sue for the cost of raising the child. I hope this school district has millions of dollars sitting around to pay damages. If the taxpayers in the district had any sense, they’d be up in arms, because ultimately the awards are coming out of their pockets.

And, not to mention, what if one of the girls decides to ‘share’ with a friend whose parents ‘opted out?’

These are children. Adults are wrong to expect them to handle things the way adults do.

I thought of that too, actually. Pedophiles like to go where there's children and there have been numerous cases in the media of teacher/student sexual abuse.

IMHO, the pervasive sexualization of children in our culture has contributed to this turn of events.

I caught part of the interview with the male Principle for this school and he gave me the creeps. He was all smiles and literally laughing, saying how pleased they were with the decision. The evil had a face and it was smiling and laughing.

Speaking of idiots, I just saw the principal (??) in an interview with Shepherd Smith on Fox answering questions re this matter.

He stuttered through his answers, was very tentative and sounded like a total moron.

Also speaking of idiots, I e-mailed the principal of my kid’s school on an important but very simple and straight forward matter. It’s now 2 e-mails, 2 phone calls/messages and one personal visit: still no frigging answer.

Apparently that is already happening. There was an incident of an unsupervised 8th grade class where the kids were committing sex acts. I also hear the different episodes of similar things happening on schoolbuses. It’s a Brave New World.

Don’t forget teachers seducing their students
