By whom? Well it was the combined armies of Europe that took to the first Crusade, but mostly Normans and Franks. Godfrey became known as the first King of Jerusalem (he refused the title, but after his death his cousin Baldwin had no such reticence, he was made lord of Edessa and ruled his Armenian Christian subjects); Raymond of Toulouse thought he would be the leader of the crusade, but he became lord of Tripoli (a singularly remarkable man). Bohemund had already bowed out of the Crusade when governance of Antioch was given to him and the Normans, but his cousin Tancred came along and became Prince of Galilee.

THAT is who captured Jerusalem (yeru = city, salem = peace; so Jerusalem is the ‘city of peace’ showing that HE is not without a sense of irony).

Isn’t it interesting that so many today are calling for someone somewhere to apologize for something! What is so magical about an apology? If truth be told, I am owed an apology by at least a half dozen people every day! lol But I don’t ask for it, and I don’t expect it. And, frankly, I don’t want it. I am very suspicious about all of this apology business.

According to legend, he (Jacques de Molay) called out from the flames that both Pope Clement and King Philip would soon meet him before God. Pope Clement died only a month later, and King Philip died in a hunting accident before the end of the year.

Seems like the Knights Templar got their apology.

In the meantime, the current Pope could revoke the following:

Pastoralis Praeeminentiae November 22, 1307 Instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets.

Vox in excelso Which officially dissolved the Order

Ad providam Turned over most Templar assets to the Hospitallers (with a generous "commission" to Philip IV).

The Vatican is understood to have given serious consideration to the request for an apology. It has previously apologised formally for the persecution of Galileo and for the Crusades.

"In a related story, descendants of Vercingetorix have demanded that Italy offer an apology to France for the outrageous behavior of Julius Caesar during his tour of Gaul in the first century.

Meanwhile, talks broke down today between the Hatfields and the McCoys over Daisy May McCoy's..."

If these people are descended from Knights, the DNA must be pretty diluted by now.

Liberalism. The mindset that you have to feel good all the time and if you don’t, then it has to be someone else’s fault and that that person has to apologize in order for you to feel good again.

I have somewhere a piece called the Bill of No Rights. ONe of the provisions says to the effect that you do not have the right to happiness. You can certainly PURSUE happiness, but you cannot expect that anyone or anything (particularly your government) has the obligation to make YOU feel good all the time.

You are King Arthur of the Britons! You like to hear yourself talk a lot, namely about some damn grail. Those closest to you are just there to serve you and bang your coconuts together. For some reason Mystical beings come to you and set you out on quests. If only more people understood you, perhaps you'd get that grail afterall.

It it weren’t for the dissolution of the Templar order none of these idiots would have ever been born.

Celibate knights don’t have descendents.

Did they even think about that?

Why revoke what can’t be rovoked? There is no Templar Order today so there’s no reason to “revoke” this.

“Vox in excelso Which officially dissolved the Order”

Again, same problem.

“Ad providam Turned over most Templar assets to the Hospitallers (with a generous “commission” to Philip IV).”

Again, same problem.

I guess this means I should apologize to Ireland on behalf of my great(x35) grandpappy Olaf the Gnarly for that raping and pillaging stuff he did. But it wasn’t his fault, as he never could hold his mead.

Well, au contraire, according to the article the Templars never "ceased to exist" but merely went "underground." Furthermore,

"Ben Acheson, a member of a Templar order based in Hertford, Hertfordshire, which claims direct descent from the original Poor Fellow Soldiers of Jesus Christ and the Temple of Solomon Grand Preceptory, called for Pope Benedict XVI to apologise formally."
So, presumably, European monarchs are still under orders to arrest Templars, AND they are still officially "dissolved" AND the Hospitaliers still have a claim on their assets.

Joan of Arc was declared a heretic (for wearing men's clothing) in 1431 and burned alive at the stake. In 1456 the Pope initiated a second trial (they reinterviewed all the original witnesses still living) and, in the end, declared the earlier trial null and void and rehabilitated her. Why do this, after all, as you say, what's done is done? There are many good reasons, for one, to satisfy and comfort her mother, also, to give her good name back, also to honor Joan as a good example and role model, and finally, to honor justice and truth which the church claims to be in favor of.

No, the Templars were disbanded. Theer is no Templar Order. All such claimants are wackos, nuts, Masons, etc.

Ben Acheson is a nut: http://www.theinsider.org/news/article.asp?id=0620 Read the end of the article to see what I mean.

You wrote:

Wrong on all counts. 1) There are no Templars to arrest, and few Catholic monarchs to arrest them if they existed. 2) The Order is not “still” dissolved, but simply dissolved. Once dissolved, it is gone. It cannot be taken back. A new order would have to be created, and there is no need and no good to come from that effort. 3) The Hospitallers have no claim to Templar assets. They own what they own. It’s that simple. There are no Templar assets because there are no Templars. Period.

“Joan of Arc was declared a heretic (for wearing men’s clothing) in 1431 and burned alive at the stake.”

No. Joan of Arc was NOT declared a heretic because of what she wore.

“In 1456 the Pope initiated a second trial (they reinterviewed all the original witnesses still living) and, in the end, declared the earlier trial null and void and rehabilitated her. Why do this, after all, as you say, what’s done is done?”

Simple. Correct procedure was not followed in the original trial. The Templar trials, no matter how unjust by our modern standards, were conducted properly according to medieval law, and the Templars long since disappeared, whereas the followers and allies of Joan were still very much alive.

“There are many good reasons, for one, to satisfy and comfort her mother, also, to give her good name back, also to honor Joan as a good example and role model, and finally, to honor justice and truth which the church claims to be in favor of.”

And none of that has anything to do with the Templars. 1) There are no Templars left. 2) Everyone already knew that the charges were probably false for centuries now, 3) the Templars, at least from their early years, are still held up as models of knights, and 4) the Church already is showing it honors the truth by publishing the book.

Yeah, but the really hard-core anti-papal-hysteria-thumping fire&brimstone Baphomet-worshipping types who can't avoid frequent red-faced public tantrums over this might want to avoid Monaco and Liechtenstein, right?

Didn't these fighting monks, the Knights Templar, take vows of celibacy?
