Ann Coulter is Not Helping
American Thinker ^ | October 13, 2007 | Richard Baehr

...The issue with Coulter is not whether she can sell books, but whether she helps or hurts the side of the political debate she claims to support. In my opinion, Coulter has never been a big help to the effort to build a conservative and Republican majority. Her most recent comments on the relationship of Christianity to Judaism, made on the CNBC show " The Big Idea" with Donnie Deutsch on Monday of this week , may prove particularly damaging...

At a time when party affiliation is fraying and a third of Americans consider themselves independent, to build a majority of 50% plus one requires persuasion. Independents will not accept all parts of either party's platform or approach but will choose a candidate for office based on which issues matter to them, and whether one or the other party connects with them on those issues. It is a skill to disagree at times without being disagreeable. Ronald Reagan had it, and it is one of the reasons he became so popular and patched together a large winning coalition . Coulter has clearly decided there is no economic advantage for her in this approach...

“Jesus is 100% man and 100% God “

You know, this is one of the most interesting tenants, to me. If you (the royal you) believe that Jesus was a god or God, what was the point of his sacrifice? I mean, for a god or God to “die” on the cross would pretty much be meaningless — because he didn’t really die. A man could die, but not God. So according to this tenant, God did not sacrifice his only begotten son because his son was really a god too. Only if you believe that Jesus was human is there a sacrifice.

Thanks! I am convinced that this lib from CT would love to get me fired but somebody more important than her would not take the bait - and she was trying very hard. it is not easy being a Jewish pro life Republican in NYC.

“Not to condemn people or judge them, but to save them and get them into the lifeboat.”

Maybe so, but you need to understand things from a perspective other than your own, at least if you wish to get your message across. Jews have a long history of unbelievably (unbelievable in today’s context-but this stuff really happened) horrible abuse (including torture and outright murder) at the hands of Christians, simply for them being Jews. Yes, this was a long time ago, but the memory is not the type to simply disappear in a few decades.

Oh, and speaking of a few decades, there is a school of thought that the Holocaust would not have been possible but for the legacy of anti-Jewish teachings by the various Christian denominations over the prior 19 or so centuries. But don’t take my word for it, take the word of a Roman Catholic priest, Edward Flannery: http://www.amazon.com/Anguish-Jews-Twenty-Three-Centuries-Antisemitism/dp/0809143240/ref=sr_1_1/103-3820549-9884608?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192474904&sr=1-1

From one of the Amazon customer reviews: “At the outset, the author claims that the vast majority of even well educated Christians have been relatively ignorant of what has happened to the Jews throughout history and the culpable involvement of many facets of the Church. Apart from a few recent publications, little having been included about anti-Semitism in Christian history books or social studies.

The author states that, by comparison, the Jews themselves are largely & acutely aware of their painful history in such matters.

This excellent book covers anti-Semitism in all it’s many forms, including persecution, torture, pogroms, massacres, social degradations, forced baptisms & conversions throughout the many periods of the Diaspora.”

You see, this entire discussion/argument about Coulter’s comments is about perspective. I expect her to be well enough informed to at least be familiar with information like that in Flannery’s book - she is, after all, highly intelligent and well-read. That she could make comments of the kind she did about this subject shows an amazing lack of caring about what others think and feel. Don’t get me wrong, we Jews don’t need to be coddled - being left alone would be good enough for us. But Ann Coulter’s backers should have at least as thick of a skin about criticism of her comments as they seem to expect of the target of her comments.

“Turning this into a condemnation is a purposeful misinterpretation. Whether you think it’s right or wrong, Christians preach conversion and salvation out of love.”

Again, maybe so. But how do you think Jews feel when they hear some preacher on TV telling them that “if someone doesn’t accept Jesus as L-rd, then they’re GOING TO BURN IN HELL!” I’ll grant you that this isn’t the norm, but it happens often enough without too much - if any - criticism from fellow Christians. What’s that supposed to do, give a Jew the warm ‘n fuzzies???

Somebody at work today, a “Christian” liberal Demo from Connecticut tried to get me into trouble by mentioning that “I am a fan and read her books”. to my surprise, somebody who is very devoutly Jewish defended Ann’s right to believe what she believes.

I, too, am Jewish (somewhat devout, depending on who you ask), and I, too, defend Ann's right to believe what she believes. I also defend her right to give voice to those beliefs.

However, I question her judgement in saying what she said, and anyone who backs her on this matter must understand that I have as much right to my POV, and to give voice to that, as she does.

Yawn. Yet another hit piece.

No biggie. Ann dishes it out, I'm sure she can take it.

But the real question is: will she cost the GOP votes? I think that is what Deutsch was trying to do.

because he didn’t really die

True, and we don't really die either. Just our flesh.

God did not sacrifice his only begotten son because his son was really a god too.

You are assuming that human beings cease to exist upon death, but I'm sure you know that Christians do not believe that. Therefore, your statement doesn't really work in this context.

Jesus sacrifice was the shedding of His blood for us and in taking on our sins while He was on the cross. (The physical pain was bad enough. I can't imagine the spiritual pain that a sinless being would experience when taking on the weight of all those sins committed by others.)

They feel it would be more hateful to say nothing and allow non-Christians to die having never heard their message.

I find it hard to believe you pay anymore attention to TV preachers than I do.

Thanks for bringing up the Holocaust (I assume you don't mean the TV movie) that automatically makes you the loser of this argument. First person to lean on Hitler, nazis, etc. to make their point...LOSES.

I’m assuming nothing, I’m pointing out the flaw of the tenant. Re-read what I wrote.

“Jesus sacrifice was the shedding of His blood for us and in taking on our sins while He was on the cross. (The physical pain was bad enough.)

And my point is, IF he is a god or God, there was no sacrifice and there was no pain. You can’t have it both ways.

Anne was flippant and frivolous about a serious subject.

He was God manifest in the flesh. What makes you think there wouldn't be any pain?

Possibly. I know that, even though I generally like Ann, at times she has said things I think are over the top. Wouldn't cause me to abandon the party, however.

I just don't see anyone who is serious about voting for the best candidate being swayed because Ann says something they find offensive.

That’s the whole point of my original post. As you point out, Jesus was the manifestation of God in HUMAN form. He was not a god with godly powers on Earth as is the claim of the tenant.

He did not cease to be God while on earth. He simply (for God anyway) took on a human nature and flesh as well.

So He could stop the suffering at any time because he was God. Where’s the sacrifice in that?

1. There are a couple dozen lepers and blind people that might argue that statement.

2. Why don't you do some research since you are the one with questions rather than grilling someone else? Here's a start:

Ronald Radosh goes after Anne for being a bomb thrower. I used to defend her tactics but it is becoming difficult to do so. (Radosh has written books about the Rosenberg trial and communists in Hollywood - he is no leftist). He says she does more harm than good and this time I am agreeing with him.

Well, why don’t you take the time to figure out that I’m the one who is being grilled as my original post was not to the person who is apparently unable to follow logic.

If you have a point to make, make it instead of the pointless post you posted to me.
