Wave arms, go to jail
The Charleston Daily Mail ^ | October 12, 2007 | Associated Press

"Under the new law, suspects can be arrested for beckoning passers-by with conversation, attempting to stop traffic by waving their arms, circling an area in a vehicle or trying to stop pedestrians. An arrest can also be made if a suspect asks if a potential prostitute or patron is a police officer."

Okay. Why don’t you tell me what your resolution to this issue is. Do you suggest we allow legalization then walk away? Do you think what we are doing now is going to end it? Do you think it’s wise to allow young girls to become involved in this without trying to get the whole problem under control?

How would you change things and regulate?

"This is way too vague and silly and slippery."

Well, the best way to test this to your satisfaction is to go there and do one or more of the following:

1. Beckon passers-by with conversation.

2. Attempt to stop traffic by waving your arms.

3. Circle an area in a vehicle.

4. Try to stop pedestrians.

5. Ask a potential prostitute if she is a police officer.

Now, if you try this, be sure to have someone videotaping the whole incident so we can see it on O'Reilly.

"Why are we trying to stop something that nobody has found a way to stop in something like four thousand years that we know of?"

Because it's much easier and generally much safer to pursue petty crimes than it is to do the hard work of taking dangerous felons off the streets. And it's a good way to produce lots of pretty stats and graphs. Plus, it gives female cops something to do.

Under no circumstances whatever should you even THINK of tapping your feet and taking a wide stance in a high crime area. The cops and the crooks will pound on you, and probably both groups at the same time.

Somehow, I don't see this passing the courtroom since it is a violation of free speech... It isn't like you were yelling "fire" in a crowded theater...

Resolve the issue? Can I get back to you tomorrow on that? I'm busy solving race relations tonight.

In the meantime, legalize, zone, age of majority providers and customers should be a big improvement. If you have any other ideas I'm sure they are useful.. 'cept for that 'taxing the crap' one, lol.

Lets get them off the streets, regulate it, make sure they have regular check-ups, and tax the carp out of it.

So that it'll stop smelling like fish?

Only in SC...

Hope you had some luck on the race relations.

My previous suggestions are about the only ones I can think of at the moment. What I do see is an industry that will always have a tendency to attract organized crime or other unsavory characters. With public safety and criminal activity in mind, I do believe this industry would have to be monitored. And if that is the case, then the cost of that should be paid for by the industry. If you don’t like calling it a tax, then make it a municipal fee or some other fee than can pay for inspectors and the infrastructure for that service.

I can understand the aversion to taxes. Taxes can be diverted for other uses. I don’t like that either and do think it wise to avoid that.

Thanks for the comments.

Can you ask a police officer if he's a prostitute?

EXACTLY!

further, as a retired LEO, may i tell you that those who spend a great deal of their shift doing this sort of NONSENSE are in a word: COWARDS (all "the cowards in blue" KNOW that if you make lots of "pinches" for minor offenses, that the "bosses" won't care that you're scared of your shadow & that you avoid "real police work" like the plague.)???
