Spain is to ban all public references to the Franco regime under a controversial Bill that seeks to make amends to the victims of the Spanish Civil War and ensuing 36-year dictatorship.
All statues, street names and symbols associated with the dictator and his supporters will be removed as part of the Law of Historic Memory, which was presented to the Madrid parliament this week.
Even plaques and stained glass windows showing the Falange symbol of the yoke and arrows or the eagle associated with Franco's rule will have to be replaced.
At one time statues glorifying the Generalissimo adorned almost every town square but most have been taken down in recent years.
The decision to remove reminders of Spain's dark past will now be enshrined in law forcing all remaining elements associated with Gen Franco to be stripped from public view.
Opponents of the measure accuse the Socialist government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, which has made the Bill a priority ahead of a general election next March, of "opening old wounds" and "denying Spain its history".
The legislation has set the government on a collision course with the Roman Catholic Church, which commemorates those who gave their lives fighting on Franco's side during the 1936-1939 war.
Dozens of churches across Spain bear memorials to some of the 10,000 clerics and devout Catholics estimated to have been killed as Leftists, fighting to defend Spain's secular republic, tried to wipe out what they saw as Catholic resistance.
But under the new law the Spanish Church risks losing state aid and financial subsidies if it fails to remove the plaques listing the names of pro-Franco fighters beneath the phrase "Fallen for God and Spain".
The move contrasts with the attitude of the Vatican, which later this month will beatify 498 Catholic "martyrs" of the Spanish Civil War.
Catholic ping!
This just in! Generalisimo Francisco Franco is still dead!
Franco died?
Although I don’t consider the fascist, muslim soldiers employing dictator Franco a good guy, the Republican side had a nasty communist component (Stalinists, Trotskyists and worst of all Christ-hating anarchists). The communists defiled churches, exhumated and mocked Catholic saints and shot at statues of Jesus and Mary. Spain better also remove the Communist memorials... but that’s a no-brainer for the leftists in charge there.
Pretend it didn’t happen - that’s always a plan, LOL.
Rewriting history is what the left does best.
The lesson, Dear children, is this: NEVER accept government money for ANYTHING you believe to be of any eternal significance, else you become dependent upon it, and thus give government a point of leverage aginst the work of God (i.e. give the Enemy a foothold, lit. "give place to the devil" cf. Ephesians 4:27).
“...to the victims of the Spanish Civil War”
What victims? It was a civil war, and thank God the communists lost. Franco was no peach, but the people he was fighting were virulent reds.
I thought Franco was a good guy who wiped out the Commies then refused to throw in his lot with Hitler and Mussolini?
The Spain of El Cid and Santiago Matamoros has become just another Euroweenie socialist state.
Are they going to photoshop his image out of the pictures in the history books the way Stalin did?
The real lesson is to never, under an circumstances, by any means, including elections, allow leftists to control your government. Do whatever it it to stop it.
“Are they going to photoshop his image out of the pictures in the history
books the way Stalin did?”
Well, here’s the style manual for today’s Spanish Socialists/Communists.
Only today’s software makes historical revisionism faster and simpler
when dealing with images.
The Commissar Vanishes: The Falsification of Photographs and Art
in Stalin’s Russia

I do have to give the compiler of “The Commisar Vanishes...” credit.
My understanding is that he describes himself as a Socialist and keeper
of Socialistic memorabilia.
But at least he was honest enough to produce this book documenting
Soviet/Stalinist visual revisionism.
Also known as “lying” via images.
Start here, one guesses.
Franco kept the Nazis off Gibraltar at a very ticklish time in the war. He and Canaris worked directly against Hitler. Canaris was strangled with piano wire for his later plot against the Fuhrer IIRC. May God preserve their memory.
What about these holy martyrs merits those nasty little punctuation signs?
Their courage and charity breaks my heart.
Sounds like just the sort of historical revisionism the Communists are infamous for.
