A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....10-12,13,14-07....T.G.I.F. at the Finest

A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY

Welcome to TGIF at the Finest!   We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our essays and/or spotlight on various FReepers. From the beginning, we've been kicking back on Saturdays and Sundays and simply reviewing the features of the week; our weekend threads now start on Friday and continue through Sunday. If you missed seeing any of this week's threads and want to say hello there now, just click on the link for that particular day. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today through Sunday, please feel free to do that also. One of us will try to be around to see the welcome mat is still out, put the coffee pot on, and maybe even bring fresh flowers for the table. : )

"Wear Red" Friday
You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why..... The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize that Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED.

Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED!! GOD BLESS AMERICA.
I received this in my email June 10th, 2006 - the author is unknown.
I am wearing red today and every Friday ~ Billie

Hi Dita! Ohio is gorgeous for the forests of hardwoods & the vast park systems that protect them. We dont do a killer pace when we go out. We "smell the roses" more or less & stop often to tak pix & watch the dogs play etc.

okay, forgive me for NOT knowing you were a turtle enthusiast! Do you have some? When my son grew up he had a wonderful pond that he dug & found turtles. He had some for years & fed them & cared for them. He still likes them but not sure if the kids still maintain the set up at his "ex's " place.

Here is a pix from my outing on bike last week. I took hundreds of pix of so many things. As it was overcast there were not as many turtles out sunning as there would be on a nice day. I have some I will dig out for you of John & a turtle we found a few years ago. We often find big ones lumbering across the towpath. We pick them up (they try to bit us) & get them to safety so mean kids dont hurt them

This pix is in the ErieOhio Canal very close to area where OhioTurnpike (I-80) and Interstate 271 cross over the Cuyahoga Valley. HUGE BRIDGES.

That was quick, Dolly!! I like that turtle sunning itself. No, I never had them as pets, would like to get the small green ones someday. But, I am fascinated by turtles. I used to walk through a botanical garden and across a little wooden bridge over the crick and there would be the turtles stickin' they little heads up.

Also, saw them in my aunt and uncle's pond in Oklahoma in the country.... don't have those pics on disk yet though.

The snapper looks a bit different, and I hope you carry gloves for when you need to move the turtles. This is a treat that you came up with the photos. Here are a couple I saved of an Egyptian tortoise and babies...

There are a lot of varieties of turtles/tortise in the wild. We usually do not have gloves on the bike outings., We do wear them on the road however (protection for falls) & a little padding for the longer distances. When it is cooler we wear them for warmth but again they are not the heavy duty ones that would really protect.

If a smapper gets you, the glove wont help. You need to hold them far enough back on the shell so his mouth cant reach BUT they flail like crazy & the front & back legs can get you. They dont know we are trying to help them so are just defensive

Love the pix you have of the little Egymptian .. so sweet..

I ran into the same thing, Dita. Couldn’t get to mail or threads, but it didn’t last long. I believe the site is still running slow and that does cause some double posts at times.

The Fight Against Fear

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me. —Psalm 23:4

In his landmark book The Denial of Death, author and anthropologist Ernest Becker argues that all of our anxieties and fears are rooted in our dread of death. Although Becker was not a Christ-follower, his scholarly study could serve as a commentary on Hebrews 2, which tells us that in our natural state we are subject to the fear of death throughout life (v.15).

We all know something about fear. And certainly the men and women we meet in the Bible were subject to fear, ranging from a mere tremor of anxiety all the way to terrifying panic. But there is never a need to panic, even in the face of death. Our Lord has experienced death and conquered it!

The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus "was made a little lower than the angels, . . . that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone" (2:9). Through His death Christ has defeated "him who had the power of death, that is, the devil," granting us our "release" from the "fear of death" (vv.14-15).

Are you victimized by your fears? Recall the wonderful, dread-dispelling promise of Scripture: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand" (Isa. 41:10).

When I fear my faith will fail,
Christ will hold me fast;
When the tempter would prevail,
He will hold me fast.  —Habershon

If you believe that Jesus lives, you don’t need to fear death.

Hi Dita
Those turtles are so cute. I wonder if they are easy to care for or smell at all. I'll have to look that up. Booboo may like them. We were thinking fish tank but that is another huge chore for me to clean tank.
