I don’t think so. As misguided and plain wrong as he may be on most if not all the issues, I believe he loves his wife and if he says he is innocent and has not betrayed her trust, I believe him.

I strongly believe the story was planted by the Hildebeast's war room (never traceable back to her, of course) to take care of one of her fellow top-tier candidates.
