Ann Coulter on CNBC Show: Jews Need 'Perfecting'
Editor and Publisher ^ | October 11, 2007 | Staff

NEW YORK Appearing on Donny Deutsch's CNBC show, "The Big Idea," on Monday night, columnist/author Ann Coulter suggested that the U.S. would be a better place if there weren't any Jewish people and that they needed to "perfect" themselves into -- Christians.

It led Deutsch to suggest that surely she couldn't mean that, and when she insisted she did, he said this sounded "anti-Semitic."

Asked by Deutsch whether she wanted to be like "the head of Iran" and "wipe Israel off the Earth," Coulter stated: "No, we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say. ... That's what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament."

Deutsch told E&P's sibling magazine, Adweek, today, "I was offended. And then, and this was interesting, she started to back off and seemed a little upset."

Asked to gauge her reaction, Deutsch said, "I think she got frightened that maybe she had crossed a line, that this was maybe a faux pas of great proportions. I mean, did it show ignorance? Anti-Semitism? It wasn't just one of those silly things."

A transcript, provided by Media Matters, follows. *

DEUTSCH: Christian -- so we should be Christian? It would be better if we were all Christian?

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: We should all be Christian?

COULTER: Yes. Would you like to come to church with me, Donny?

DEUTSCH: So I should not be a Jew, I should be a Christian, and this would be a better place?

COULTER: Well, you could be a practicing Jew, but you're not.

DEUTSCH: I actually am. That's not true. I really am. But -- so we would be better if we were - if people -- if there were no Jews, no Buddhists --

COULTER: Whenever I'm harangued by --

I just wish they would ask every Muslim guest that they have on their shows if they believe that we Christians will spend eternity having boiling water poured down our throats.

But “gotcha” journalism is only for certain people.

I’d say that Ann is more genuine than Michael Savage. I don’t know if Ann is her real name but I know “Michael” and “Savage” aren’t his.

I did not read her book on Communist infiltration into the US but that reportedly was a researched work, not strictly a book of “outrageous statements” designed for shock value.

I don’t trust a single thing appearing in print anymore. I wouldn’t doubt that the entire interview was invented by the writer out of thin air with Hillary Clintoon personally editing the article.

When I hear Ann describe what was actually said, I’ll start drawing conclusions.

Thanks for providing the full transcript. Now what is Media Matters attempting, and what gives the organization the right to provide and edited transcript and claim it’s what Coulter said.

And as for Editor and Publisher, it’s just another bunch of liberal BS.

well, surprise, surprise. Media Matters did, in fact, distort and edit her comments.

However, she got herself ankle deep in it. Media Matters distorts what she said. The Media reports it as written by Media Smatters. The sheeple hear the report on CBSNBCABCCNNMSLSD and nod their head like they knew what she said.

Deutsch jumps all over one sentence and makes a big "gotcha" out of it. He can't get by the one sentence. Desperate for ratings, and for anyone to notice that he actually has a show, he sensationalizes the comment.

So, right now, on Steve Malzberg's show on WOR Ann Coulter will hopefully explain her comments.

I see anti-Semitism as the desire to see the entire Jewish race wiped out.

I'm pretty sure that insulting feelings toward all Jews qualifies as anti-Semitism, as the term is commonly understood.

Desiring them to be perfected CANNOT equate to this.

Desiring a group of people different from you to be "perfected", when you define perfection to be whatever you are, can certainly be seen as insulting.

OBL says everyone should be a Muslim. I think people should choose what’s best for them, but that’s me.

Let's move slowly here. I think every one should be Christian. I also think people should choose what's best for them. I think Christianity is best for them, BUT they should be allowed, I think, to choose, not only what's best for them but, within certain hard to define limits, what they think is best for them, even if they are,in my view, mistaken. Most Christians, I dare say, agree with me, and the Vatican ha spoken long and loud in recent centuries about religious freedom.

OBL, on the other hand, thinks that if people persist in choosing something other than what HE thinks is best for them they should be aggressively proselytized, and if they persist in their recalcitrance, penalized economically and with the loss of certain civil rights, or killed.

So while I share some things with OBL, I do not share all. Neither does Ann.

I went to foxnews and read the transcript......looks to me like more of deutsch’s words are put into Anns mouth later than were actually hers.....in fact, deutsch might have intended to set her up, based on her previous statement about converting muslims

The Democrats fear the word "Christian" like Dracula fears sunlight.

Maybe it was taken totally out of context...the media is good at that.....Media Matters is even better at that. BS, I’d wager.

“Becoming perfected ‘ is a theological term in Christianity that means becoming Christlike by allowing Christ to live in you. By allowing that you are becoming or allowing Christ to “perfect” you to become more like him in thought and deed. We don’t ever arrive to perfection. We can not become perfect by ourselves. Only through Christ. This is a daily walk and journey. I think Ms. Coulter didn’t give herself the amount of time to explain this. Maybe Donny jumped the gun and took it to mean that in the worse possible way. Ann was trying, I think, to state the difference between Christians and Jewish religion. I believe Mother Theresa strove to become “perfected in Christ” by her daily walk in giving her life and all the areas of it to Christ.

Very true, it’s not any coincedence Ann Coulter’s last big statement, about the 9/11 wives enjoying the publicity brought on by their dead husbands, came out about the time of her last book release.
Naturally, a lot of people on this site are going to say, “take it in context,” or “merely a media matters propaganda ploy,” etc. Fine, take a look at the context from this Foxnews article, http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,301216,00.html, and make up your mind for yourself.
In my opinion, as a Jew, I understand that Christianity is indeed an inherent proselytizing religion. If that’s what your scripture compels, I don’t have a problem with people trying to obtain that goal as long as they do so by lawful, nonviolent, appropriate means. But what Ms. Coulter has done is imply that Christian people are superior human beings in general, not merely perhaps more enlightened spiritually. Her language is offensive and frankly dangerous. She also doesn’t demonstrate her knowledge as a proper Christian, as most know that a certain amount of Jews in the Holy Land is necessary for the return of Christ. Her comments are ignorant and really very hurtful. Naturally, we’ll see her blame putting her foot in her mouth on the liberal media. Gimme a break please, this is blatant. Read the primary source, the transcripts yourself and make up your mind.

Why don’t they all just stop. Just for a day. I probably speak for millions of Americans. I am simply sick of the bulls*&t from both sides.

How about if people stop yelling for a day.

I am not a “kumbaya” kind of guy, but I am so turned off by both sides.

Enough already. Lets get something done.

And your opinion is nothing but Universalist claptrap. More snares of the devil himself. “There are many ways to God”. That’s not factually or historically true. I was Jew who came to know the Lord, not through blind faith but by actually studying the bible, reading everything thing I could on the historicity and validity of the New testament facts and was convinced first intellectually. Sorry to insult to some of you fellow Jews but your wrong, the Buddhist is wrong as is the Muslim. You can be sincere in your beliefs but also be sincerely wrong. Not that I take joy in being correct but feel sad that some refuse to see the truth. I read the transcript of what Ann said and though her delivery and way the statement was framed by Mr. Geebo Donny Douche was awkward, her heart was in the right place. I find that most Universalists or people who follow lies and passivity instead of the truth are more dangerous than the most zealous of Christians. Ann was doing what she is commissioned to do, and until our President admits that Islam is a contrarian fantasy of a 7th century child molester he will be like Peter on the day of the crucifixion denying the Lord with actions and his tongue.

Coulter has gotten big stuff wrong before (Thompson), too. For example, she was just sure that John Roberts was the second coming of David Souter. That being said, she’s usually right, even if there’s “more heat than light” much of the time.

I don’t find it entertaining, and I am not enamored with her. Nothing I have posted indicated that I did or am. I merely pointed out the difference between an rant in reaction to a terrorist attack, versus the terrorist attack itself. The two are not morally equivalent. Your implication that they were was as outrageous as what Coulter said in the first place.

It must be very trying to be “on stage” every minute of one’s life. She was referring to gentiles being the grafted branch of the chosen people, the Jews. I believe she tripped over her words in trying to make a more profound statement about a complicated subject, and her timing was off.

It was certainly not meant to be offensive.
