A Minnesota university has suspended one of its graduate students who sent two e-mail messages to school officials supporting gun rights.

Hamline University also said that master's student Troy Scheffler, who owns a firearm, would be barred from campus and must receive a mandatory "mental health evaluation" after he sent an e-mail message arguing that law-abiding students should be able to carry firearms on campus for self-defense.

Hamline spokesman Jacqueline Getty declined on Wednesday to answer questions about the suspension, saying that federal privacy laws prohibited the school from commenting. Scheffler had previously waived his privacy rights in a letter to Hamline University President Linda Hanson.

“The idea of people carrying guns on campus is crazy. “

Why? Why is a campus a crazy place to carry a gun? Is there some magical force field that keeps bad guys away from a campus? (Hint: Many rapes, thefts, and murders happen at college.)

Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re NOT out to get you.

That’s what this article reminds me of. You hear about things like this — crushing the 1st Amendment for anyone who believes in some of the OTHERS — but it’s hard to believe it when it actually happens — and someone can have something like this happen NOW — in the United States of America.

it will happen much more with Hillary, or Rudy, or Osama as President. That’s just a fact...

Trust me, just go out and ask the man on the street if he thinks post adolescent college boys carrying loaded guns on campus is going to help or hurt. Just see how many people agree with your proposition.

“Just see how many people agree with your proposition.”

Everyone I have asked has said so. In fact, is has been a huge debate here in Colorado. The women of the colleges wanted protection; they got it. Your point of view is that they cannot be trusted to possess a firearm. Sad that you think that, too, because we trust them to drive a car, go to war, and even attend college and vote, but you think they shouldn’t be carry a weapon or defend themselves because somehow they cannot be trusted. You are talking out of both sides of your mouth. Besides, it is THEIR life and THEY should be the ones to decide, as adults, if they want to arm themselves. What gives you the right to tell them they cannot defend themselves with a firearm??

“I would not have suspended him, but I would have told him not to return for the next semester.”

Little harsh, there, FRiend. If the school is in fact passing him when he’s “not cracked a book” then he is just going along with the school’s own culture.

“His emails are an embarrassment. I’ve told subordinates at work (military) not to hit ‘send’ when you are mad - calm down first, delete your draft and start over. Angry emails persuade no one.”

Probably the most sensible statement on the whole thread, here.

“And while rough emails are OK when sent to a coworker who knows you, it is well worth the time to craft a solid email when writing a stranger, or advocating a change in policy.”

Quickly followed by the second-most sensible statement on the whole thread.

Personally, I think he should sue for civil rights violations, then slink away quietly and live as a hermit up in the mountains somewhere, and hope his 15 minutes ends soon.

“I could kill you with a pencil...is carrying that crazy too?”

And I could get both of you with a newspaper. We need to outlaw ALL weapons! Rocks, hammers, even plastic forks...

/end sarcasm, just in case it was necessary.

“try asking people outside of the NRA convention.

I see. You’re one of those liberal types who thinks all gun owners are NRA members, wears cammo, and kills innocent Bambis while driving sky-high 4-wheelers and drinking beer.

Nothing dumber than an ignorant person who thinks they know it all.

” Guns don’t belong on campus with frat boys any more than they belong with drunken cowboys in Abilene and Dodge City and as far as I am concerned that is completely in line with Security of a free state”

Guns aren’t about a “free state” as you think it; meaning only the state should have guns or that guns should only be possessed to defend the state. They are about pesonal protection from the state and any other bad guy.

Why should my little daughter not be armed and capable of defending herself just because your drunk frat boy can’t control himself? Try raising an adult instead of a drooling idiot.

No I am not a liberal type. I have a owned a gun in the past and I respect the NRA, but not on this.

Only a liberal, and never a conservative, believes a person should not be armed because someone else is irresponsible, or believes guns are for the defense of the state as you stated. Only a liberal can be so blind to the truth about guns.

I never said guns were strictly for the defense of the state.Lib’s do twist things around and that is there twist of the second amendment. But, I hold that anyone of good sense can see that allowing post adolescent kids to run around college campus’s with loaded guns is absurd.

I went to work yesterday and asked my fellow coworkers (virtually all of whom are Southern Conservatives) what they thought about guns on campus and everyone of them said it was crazy. These are people who have literally no liberal views at all and are down the line conservative on every issue. None of them agree.

I will not deny the proposition that guns in responsible and mature hands can be conducive to self defense. But, on the other hand the more guns there are, the more accidents and irresponsible even criminal use occurs. Given the immaturity and the culture on campus and th relative safety of most campus’s I say allowing kids to carry guns ins nuts and I would bet the overwhelming majority of the people in this country would agree with me including most conservatives. I looked on line and the only state that allows kids to carry guns on campus is Utah. I guess Mississippi, Indiana, Montana, Texas, Alabama and South Carolina are all dominated by Volvo driving, wine and Cheese set liberals.
