WASHINGTON — Texas has long viewed itself as a conservative bastion, but the Lone Star State ranked third in the nation between 2000 and last year in receipt of federal dollars, raking in aid and contracts worth more than $1.2 trillion.
An analysis by a private watchdog group found that state agencies and a number of congressional districts were major beneficiaries of the federal largesse. For example:
• Rep. Ron Paul has long crusaded against a big central government. But the maverick GOP lawmaker and presidential contender also has represented a congressional district that is consistently among the top in Texas in its reliance on dollars from Washington. In the first nine months of the federal government's 2006 fiscal year alone, it received more than $4 billion in federal aid.

Paul's spokeswoman, Rachel Mills, said the congressman is aware that his district ranks high as a recipient of federal dollars.
She said Paul will continue to support federal grants to the district,"as long as taxes are taken by force from the people of Texas."
She added, "While Congressman Paul strongly believes that federal spending is out of control, the government has made promises to people in the form of Medicare and Social Security that many rely on, and it would be wrong to break those promises."

Given their proportional over-representation (especially in he Senate) i’s just a fact of political life that “red” states tend to be net gainers in Federal tax flows, and that on the average the more rural an area, the greater the advantage. So I think we can take it for granted that there will aways be a tension between political theory and political practice in this regard, irrespective of whether such areas are represented by Democrats or Republicans.
Principles are nice, so is getting reelected.

Let me state that I am not a Paulite. Now that that’s out of the way I have to question why so much time is spent here on FR denouncing Ron Paul if, as many say here, he doesn’t stand a chance anyway. I really don’t see the Republicans putting forward any candidates of sterling moral character or espousing a platform that’s not socialism lite except maybe Fred Thompson and I wonder about him.
So why all the effort to smear Ron Paul?

Because these people don’t want to make war on Saudi Arabia, the true state sponsor of terrorism and Wahabi poison, or even to find Osama Bin Laden. Instead they want to continue to endanger American military men and women and tax us into submission, only to endanger us with their short-sighted foreign policy blunders in Iraq.
It sounded radical at first, but the more I study Islamic history and Islamo-American relations, this is the only conclusion I can come to.
You probably won’t get a reasonable response from the anti-Paul brigade, outside of “he wants to surrender to al-Queda” or some other nonsense.
