Jo Ann Davis' husband may seek her congressional seat

WASHINGTON - Chuck Davis, husband of the late Rep. Jo Ann Davis, is seriously considering running for his wife's congressional seat in hopes of completing her legacy, according to several Republican activists.

"He is considering very strongly running," said Brenda Pogge, a longtime Davis family friend and a candidate for state delegate. "A lot of people are extremely excited about it. Chuck's willingness to run will avoid a train wreck in the 1st District."

The likely move could make Davis, a retired Hampton firefighter, the early frontrunner in a special election later this year that could draw many contenders for the open congressional seat. Virginia's 1st District, which stretches from Newport News to Prince William County, is a longtime Republican stronghold.

Davis declined to comment Monday, saying he wanted to wait until after his wife's funeral on Thursday.

But party activists who have spoken with Davis in recent days confirmed he has signaled an interest in the job.

Didn’t read the article. Did read earlier about Mrs Davis. I say why not? If Lindy Boggs and Bono did it. BTW, we can thank Lindy for supporting Mr Freezer Jefferson who took her seat when she vacated.

Sounds like a plan.

This is great news. He’s a conservative as his wife was. Now we’ll not see a RINO win that seat.

Cokie Roberts’ mom.

You are correct.

If this pans out, this could be a first in the history of the republic. No widower husband has ever followed a deceased wife into Congress.

Then again, there’s the factor where the stepping-in spouse eventually switches parties. While that’s usually a woman I wouldn’t be surprised to find some nutless wonder going over for the Dems sometime soon.

I forgot...how did the Brock (of the famous candy company) thing end up when Bill died and the wife got the slot?

I think the widower is OK from what I’ve read.

I’m not sure what you mean by Bill Brock, he’s very much alive. Last I heard, he was still a Maryland resident where he ran a respectable race for the U.S. Senate up there back in 1994 (trying to become the first person in the popular vote era to get elected to the Senate from two separate states — which hadn’t been done since the 19th century). Funny thing is, had he stayed in TN, he might’ve been able to oust Sasser 18 years after he lost to him. That would’ve been a sweet vindication. His son just won the GOP nomination for the special election being held for the Crooked Ward Crutchfield’s State Senate seat last week.

Wow - I’ve never been more wrong in a long history of being wrong. Still though - that dodging around through other states is a strong sign of cheesiness...like one Hillary Clinton.

I think you might be thinking of Howard Baker, Sr. When Baker, Sr. was a House member, he died in office 5 days short of his 62nd birthday in January 1964, and his wife (Howard, Jr’s stepmother, Irene) briefly held the office after the special and stepped down in 1965 after less than 10 months. She was succeeded by Knoxville Mayor John Duncan, Sr. who held the seat until he died in 1988 and was succeeded by his son, the current occupant.

Oops, knowing the VA mood, this seat could go Democrat in preparation for President HRC and Senator Mark Warner.

Over the years though Brock moved sharply to the left, much like Alan Simpson and so many others.

I’m not sure what you mean by that. Brock was only in the Senate a scant 6 years. His first year, he scored a 100 from the ACU (1971), his last, an 86 (1976). Not exactly a sharp turn to the left.

The real sharp turn to the left was when he was defeated by Daffuhzit Sasser, and his rating was a “Socialist 17” in 1977.

When he was RNC chair, didn’t Brock side with the “moderates” most of the time?

Being RNC Chair is difficult, because it tends not to be a position from which you’re going to be able to effect great changes (at least from an ideological perspective) and they tend to have to defer to the establishment. He inherited the job at a time when it wasn’t enviable in the least (in 1977) and was around to preside over its return to majority status (in the Senate, at least) and the Presidency by 1980. I’m struggling to remember now if it was his notion about holding the GOP Nat’l Convention in Detroit in 1980, partly over the hopes of trying to attract Black votes back to the party (at that time, Blacks had only been “fully wedded” both North & South for only about a dozen years — of course, here we are approaching 40 years, and they remain as radicalized as ever. A valiant, but failed effort, alas).
